FAIRBANKS — A North Pole man escaped a fire at his home on Tuesday morning.
The man called authorities just before 11 a.m. to report that his home in the 1800 block of Dawson Road was on fire and that he was trapped on the balcony. He got off the balcony before firefighters arrived and was not seriously injured.
Firefighters from the North Star Volunteer Fire Department were able to bring the blaze under control within a half hour. The main floor of the building, which also had a daylight basement, was extensively damaged.
Damage to the house was estimated at more than $100,000.
The owner has insurance, but it was unknown Wednesday if a renter living in the home had insurance as well.
Mutual aid was provided by the Fort Wainwright Fire Department.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
