FAIRBANKS — A Fairbanks man is accused of stealing and crashing his sister’s car and then damaging another vehicle she owned to rescue it, which also was taken without her permission.

James Andrew Blair, 53, has been charged with two counts of first-degree vehicle theft, a felony, as well as driving without a valid license.

Just after 6 a.m. Tuesday, Alaska State Troopers received a report of a silver Toyota in a ditch off Ivory Road.

They tracked down the owner of the vehicle nearby and found a red Honda with a flat tire and damaged rim in a driveway.

Blair’s sister told troopers that Blair had been staying in a cabin on her property but that he did not have permission to drive either car.

When confronted by troopers, Blair initially denied any involvement, then admitted to driving the Toyota into a ditch and walking back to get the Honda.

He said he was unable to pull the Toyota out of the ditch and damaged the Honda in the process, according to a criminal complaint filed in court.

Damage to the Honda was estimated at $500.
