Kusko 300 sled dog race trying to raise money

Published Wednesday, November 19, 2008

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A manager accused of looting the coffers of the Kuskokwim 300 Sled Dog Race has put the race in a bad spot.

The race is out an estimated $15,000 as it prepares for the January start of the mushing season. The Bethel to Aniak race is scheduled to begin on Jan. 16.

Last year, the race offered a $100,000 purse, the third largest purse behind the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race.

Race chairman Myron Angstman says former race manager Staci Gillilan has agreed to pay restitution. But he says that remains up to a judge.

In the meantime, the race is doing just about anything it can to raise the purse money, including selling the company truck.
