Local televisions slow to convert
Published Wednesday, November 12, 2008
FAIRBANKS — Only about 34 percent of local over-the-air television households in Fairbanks have applied for coupons to help make the upcoming switch to digital television, according to federal officials.
As many as two $40 coupons are available per household to purchase converter boxes that will switch analog televisions to accept a digital signal.
Consumers may apply for a coupon on a first-come, first-served basis at www.DTV2009.gov or by calling 1-888-DTV-2009. The switch to digital television is planned for Feb. 17.

I am not sure, but I think my TV has a built in receiver. I kinda hope it doesn't, much as I'd miss PBS, but if I can get rid of tv and just rent stuff I think it will be good for me

Please Read the [N]umbered list(1-6)at the begining of the article and if you get the chance, read the book itself. The Noel Wien Library Currently has two copies availible.
There is a mention therein contained of Russia secretly conducting experiments on the populace in Oregons Willamete Valley at the begining of the 1970's(due to it's containing two major univercities:OSU and UofO), I lived there at the mentioned time, and [D]o atribute many of my health problems (including a brain aneurysm) to this type of ignorance and inept experimentation by the Governments of this WORLD.
I fail to believe this was well thought out, and am [G]reatly troubled by it!
Please note that the H.A.R.P. Project is nothing that has been classified, mainly due to it's relative obscurity from the publics eye (it is in Alaska you know!)....
I was slow to convert.
I just got it done though. Thought I'd pass on some info.
I bought the converter and checked it out. I live in Fairbanks, near lathrop high school. With the converter on, and minimal antenna, I barely got PBS.
I bought a $45 digital antenna at Walmart. It can be mounted inside or outside and came with a small signal booster. I mounted it on the roof, pointed towards UAF and got PBS in fine. when I added the booster on it, I got ABC, CW, PBS1, PBS2, and NBC in great! I put the signal booster in the crawl apace, at the main junction that splits the cables through the whole house. Now all the TV's receive the same good signal.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to get FOX7 or CBS 13 in at all. Someone needs to kick them in the butt and get them broadcasting up to speed.
The channels I do get in though, come in VERY nice. The lowest signal strength I get is 40. A signal of 20, was enough to see the channel fairly good.
I'm tickled that I wont have to pay cable prices, just to see the local stations. I also hope the local stations realize that the better their signals, the less people buy cable, and thus decrease competition for viewers.
I quit watching tv about 15 years ago; don't think my dvd player really cares. ((shrugs))
My biggest hope is that most people will just forget about the digital transition and that next year the screens will all be blank. Can you imagine the amount of creative projects and family conversations that will occur with that. If you don't use your mind they (through the tv)will use it for you.
What a marketing job sold to congress-- make all TVs in the USA worthless and sell everyone a new TV made overseas!
My tv bought in 1990 works just fine. So congress changes the broadcast standard so I need to buy a new to watch commercials!
All tvs have V chip required by congress; anyone ever us it?
What I was trying to point out here is that there is a possibility that there may be an attempt at some extremely dangerous experiments by our Government,(ie,. mind control) and we may be the guinea pigs...
How did [S]enator Obama vote on this issue!!!
