FAIRBANKS — Leland Rich lived up to his name as he skipped his rink to big money in the Yukon Title Curling Classic.

Rich’s rink won the championship and $6,000 by defeating the Greg Persinger Rink 7-3 on Sunday night at the Fairbanks Curling Club.

The championship officially breaks a three-year streak by Jason Laraway of Seattle, who did not compete this year.

Persinger’s team walked away with $3,200 for their runner-up efforts.

The title winners’ closest call came in the quarterfinal round Sunday morning, when a three-point ninth end propelled them to an 8-7 win over Darrol Stuart of Whitehorse.

From there, the route to the title went through a pair of Persingers.

Rich’s rink defeated the Ken Persnger Rink 9-2 in a semifinal that afternoon.

Greg Persinger’s rink downed Cal Fister of Canada 8-4 in the semifinals to make the championship an all-Fairbanks affair.

Fister defeated Dave Hill 8-4 in the quarterfinals.

Semifinal losers took home $1,400 and quarterfinal losers earned $1,000.

The six-team bracket was determined by pool play Friday and Saturday.

The top three teams in two pools advanced to the elimination round, and the first-place teams in each pool (both Persingers’ rinks) earned a bye in the quarterfinals.
