Portion of Fortymile caribou hunt closes Sunday at midnight

FAIRBANKS — The federal winter subsistence hunt for Fortymile caribou will close in part of unit 20E on Sunday at midnight because caribou from the Nelchina herd have moved into the area.
The area that will be closed is south of a line that passes through milepost 60 of the Taylor Highway. All other federal lands in unit 20E will remain open.
Nelchina caribou have moved into the southern portion of unit 20E in numbers large enough to warrant a closure, according to a Bureau of Land Management press release issued late Friday afternoon. Area closures or hunt restrictions are initiated when Nelchina caribou are present in a mix of more than one Nelchina caribou to 15 Fortymile caribou. The number of Nelchina caribou in the area currently exceeds that ratio.
The harvest quota for Nelchina caribou is expected to be met in other units during state and federal hunts and no harvest of Nelchina caribou is allocated to Unit 20E.
The federal winter subsistence hunt for Fortymile caribou opened on Nov. 1. The state hunt for Fortymile caribou opens on Dec. 1 by registration permit.
