Interior Alaska athletes named to High School Heisman list

FAIRBANKS — Two Lathrop High School athletes and one Kenny Lake High School athlete were selected as state finalists for the Wendy’s High School Heisman.

Kaitlyn Hull and David Norris of Lathrop and Adrina Knutson of Kenny Lake were named as part of the 20 state finalists for the award.

The program recognizes outstanding senior-year students. One boy and one girl will be selected from the 20 state finalists, made of 10 boys and 10 girls, and will go to New York City in December for the national awards.

The state winners will be announced Friday.

In December, one boy and one girl will be selected from six regions (Alaska is in the Far West). Each of those 12 students will receive a gold medal and $2,000 for their high schools. The two national winners will receive a trophy and $10,000 for their high schools.

Patriots grapplers topple Wolfpack

North Pole’s wrestling team scored a 53-24 victory over West Valley on Tuesday night in North Pole.

The Patriots won with pins by Jared Hein over Brandon Holmgren (145 pounds), Zach McKirdy over Bryce Melegari (160), Mike Gelinas over Jerry Johnson (189), Kyle Stark over Wyatt Reed (103) and David Chandler over Jared Fairbanks (125).

North Pole took one match by points, Jacob Rahlfs won 17-2 over Josh Jones (130).

The Wolfpack got pins from Brandon Comeau over T.J. Shepersky (152) and Val Blackburn over Denis Haugen (171). West Valley took two matches by points : Doug Templeton 3-1 over Chris Frazier and Derek Templeton 7-2 over Kevin Jutila.

West Valley’s Kyle Maehlin (215) won by forfeit, as well as North Pole’s Clay Tidwell (285), Cody Decker (112) and Cyle Ercolino (119).

Some information on weight classes was not available.
