Anchorage leaders are starting to line up to replace Mayor Mark Begich, who is running for U.S. Senate and is otherwise slated to step down due to term limits next spring.

Eric Croft, a Democratic former state lawmaker and gubernatorial candidate, has filed paperwork with the Alaska Public Offices Commission in advance of the 2009 mayor’s race. Dan Sullivan, a member of the Anchorage Assembly, also has filed paperwork with APOC.

Croft, who is working as a municipal prosecutor, said Thursday the mayor of Alaska’s largest city has an obligation to work with other communities. He said he also worries Anchorage’s growth could lead to big-city crime.

“I want to proactively prevent that,” he said.

A phone message left at Sullivan’s home phone was not immediately returned Thursday afternoon.
