NIKISKI -- A Nikiski High School teacher from Kenai has filed to run for Sen. Ted Stevens' seat.

First, Bob Bird must win the Alaskan Independence Party nomination in the August primary.

That should be easily done. The 56-year-old father of three faces no primary opponent, and already has received the endorsement of his party.

Bird describes himself as a "near-libertarian conservative" on fiscal and social issues.

He led the Alaska Rescue Project in 1989, a nonviolent civil disobedience campaign at abortion clinics, and served as president of Alaska Right to Life from 1995 to 1997.

Bird ran against Stevens in the Republican primary in 1990.
