Petersburg teen dies in hunting accident

ANCHORAGE -- Alaska State Troopers say a Petersburg teenager died in an accidental shooting while hunting grouse.
Sixteen-year-old Jacob Madsen slipped on ice Sunday afternoon and his .22-caliber rifle fired as he and a 17-year-old companion walked along Dry Straits Road about 28 miles from the city.
A bullet struck Madsen in the head.
Madsen's friend tried to drive to get help but his truck bogged down in a swampy area.
The boy found three fishermen a mile away who drove their truck back to the scene, loaded Madsen into it and started driving to Petersburg.
An ambulance met them and completed the trip to Petersburg Medical Center, where Madsen was pronounced dead.

May The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob be with the family of the hunter and his friend.
I grieve for the Madsen family as I'm sure hundreds of Alaskans do. This is a terrible hunting accident. However, I can't help but wonder what these two teenage boys were doing hunting grouse when the season closed in March and doesn't reopen until August.
Grouse season closes in the Petersburg District on May 15. I understand grouse season stays open in some areas of the Fairbanks District until mid April. Check the regulations in your district.
