For the Lathrop girls, Thursday was a day of marked improvement.

After edging Eielson in their first game of the season, Lathrop left no doubt this time around, taking down Hutchison 11-0 at Allridge Field.

“It was a much better outing for us than our first game. It was a really solid performance all around,” Lathrop coach Danny Gibson said. “We’re getting more comfortable as a team with every touch.”

Nine different players notched goals for the Malemutes, with Brooke Zellweger and Julie Gilhuly scoring two goals apiece.

“They spread it around pretty well,” Gibson said.

Also scoring for the Malemutes were Jaime Sawchuk, Monique Dungey, Katie Hovda, Sarah Kimball, Shayla Romans, Hanna Ross and Katie Hopkins.

The Lathrop boys also shut out Hutchison, though the details of that game were not available.

The Malemutes get back in action starting at 5:30 p.m. today when they take on North Pole at Allridge Field. The Malemutes then face cross-town rival West Valley on Saturday.

“We still have a long road to go. The games get tougher from here on out,” Gibson said. “We’re off to a good start and looking forward to the rest of the season, hoping we can keep playing with this intensity and improve with every game.”
