Wilson wins three events, North Pole sweeps meet

Hutchison’s Kim Wilson sprinted to three wins and North Pole captured both team titles in Saturday’s high school track and field meet at North Pole.

Wilson led the way for the Hawks to garner a runner-up finish in the girls meet, winning the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes.

She won the 100 in 13.17, the 200 in 27.31 and the 400 in 1:05.17, setting the pace for the Hawks. Anna Johnson added to Hutchison’s point total, taking the top spot in the shot put with a heave of 29-feet, 9 inches.

The North Pole girls won all four relay events, and got individual wins from Christi Schmitz in the 1,600 (5:42.26), Muriel Berg in the 300 hurdles (55.87) and T’Keyah Joseph in the 100 hurdles (19.06), to claim the team title with 161 points. Hutchison was second with 62 and West Valley finished third with 46. Eleven schools from throughout the Interior competed in the event.

The main portion of West Valley’s team was competing in the Anchorage Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Lathrop was entered in a meet at Palmer.

The Patriot girls won the 4x100 relay in 56.49, the 4x200 in 2:01.21, the 4x400 in 4:45.99 and the 4x800 in 10:59.11.

Monroe Catholic’s Lizzy Bennett was the only other individual girls winner on Saturday, posting a time of 2:33.38 in the 800-meter run.

The North Pole boys dominated the 100- and 200-meter dashes and won two relays to claim first place in the team standings.

The Patriots compiled 158 points. Delta Junction was second with 62 and Eielson was third with 46. Twelve teams scored points.

Dane Ebanez led a North Pole sweep of the top four spots in the 100 with a time of 11.54. Todd McCormick led a top-three sweep of the 200, posting a 24.01. The Patriots David Nicholson also posted an individual win in the discus with a toss of 123-4.

North Pole won the 4x100 relay in 45.02 and the 4x200 in 1:34.97.

Homeschool student Ben Gallegos was the only double-winner Saturday as he took the top spot in both hurdles races. He had a time of 16.39 in the 110 high hurdles and 45.05 in the 300 hurdles.

Other individual winners were Lathrop’s Anthony Davis in the 400 (53.98), Monroe Catholic’s Matt McCoy in the 800 (2:21.31) and Eielson’s Ethan Kazmierczak in the 1,600 (5:05.83).

Delta Junction won the 4x400 relay in 4:09.68 and Hutchison captured the 4x800 relay in 9:35.67.

The final all-schools meet of the season is slated for Friday and Saturday at Lathrop.

West Valley

West Valley’s distance runners turned in some outstanding efforts to head up the list of Wolfpack performers at the Anchorage Invitational.

Senior Crystal Pitney led the way for the Wolfpack with a winning time of 11:37.09 in the 3,200 and a runner-up finish in the 1,600 in 5:24.0, just .04 seconds behind winner Abby Reed.

“That was one of those races that could have gone either way,” said Lathrop coach Milo Griffin.

Junior Kayla Teslow was second in the 800 with a time of 2:30.63 and fourth in the 1,500 in 5:35.0.

Sophomore Werner Hoeffler earned a pair of top-three finishes for the Wolfpack boys. He placed third in the 3,200 in 10:05.8 and fourth in the 1,600 with a 4:39.08. Jacob Remington was fifth in the 800 in 2:05.91.

In field events, Marisa Rorabaugh tied for third in the high jump at 4-foot-6 and fourth in the triple jump at 29-6. On the boys side, Jarred Lindsey tied for fourth place at 5-8 and Aaron Wilbur was fifth in the long jump at 18-8 1/2.

“It was a good experience for our kids to go down their and compete against some of the top competitors in the state,” Griffin said. “I’m really proud of how everyone competed.”

Participating schools included Dimond, Kenai, Chugiak, Bartlett, East Anchorage, Kodiak, South Anchorage and Grace Christian.

Results of Lathrop’s meet at Palmer were not available Sunday evening.

Softball starts

The first high school softball games of the season in the Interior are scheduled to get under way today at the Interior Girls Softball Association Fields.

The Eielson Ravens are at Monroe Catholic in a 6 p.m. Aurora Conference game on Field I. Delta Junction plays a non-conference doubleheader, facing Lathrop at 6 p.m. and North Pole at 7:45 p.m.

Coaches are asked to report results to 459-7581 as soon as possible following the game.

Soccer starts

The Mid Alaska Conference soccer season will make its long-awaited debut tonight with a pair of doubleheaders.

Monroe Catholic will go up against Hutchison at Allridge Field and Eielson is at Lathrop. Boys games are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m., and the girls game starts at 7:15.
