May 4, 1998 — North Pole Mayor Tim Peters is sponsoring a resolution to withdraw an ethics complaint made against him by Councilman Jeff Jacobson in mid-March. The council will vote on the resolution at tonight’s meeting.
“I am outraged,” Jacobson said. “I just find this totally baffling. My question is how can the individual involved in the allegation sponsor a resolution withdrawing it from him.” According to earlier comments by Peters, Jacobson’s complaint alleges that Peters violated city code when he disposed of a Japanese good luck charm — a daruma — and accuses him of being dishonest in not immediately claiming responsibility for the disposal.

May 4, 1983 — The Cushman Street Bridge will close June 1 for as long as 45 days for repair work. The closing is part of four Fairbanks bridges, which began last summer, said Orlen Entzel, construction engineer for Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.
Pedestrians will be able to use the bridge, and one lane will remain open at all times for emergency vehicles only, Entzel said. The DOT has made no alternative routing planes for traffic during the time the bridge is closed.

May 4, 1958 — City crews are willing and equipped to haul away old cars within city limits if owners will call to give them permission, E. Leroy Smith, superintendent of public works, said today. “We’d like to clear the city of all the wrecks while the lowboy and crane and crew is in action,” Smith said. “But we cannot go on private property without permission.” Fairbanksans may call either Smith’s office or the office of the city manager to give city permission to haul away the wrecks.

May 4, 1933 — Territorial appropriations for allowances for city schools were reduced 4.4 percent by the recent Legislature, Forbes L. Baker, clerk of the Fairbanks School Board, has been advised in a message from A.E. Karnes, Commissioner of Education, whose headquarters are in Juneau. The Territorial allowance for Fairbanks for the current year was approximately $31,000. “I suggest that in submitting your budget you be guided accordingly,” Karnes said. With respect to teachers’ pensions, he states: “The teachers’ pension act was repealed by the Legislature, but deductions must be made for the current school year. Forms are being sent for teachers to apply for refund of all money paid to the pension fund.”
