Lathrop students publish latest edition of ‘Goldstream’ magazine

The University of Alaska Fairbanks’ literary magazine “Permafrost” isn’t the only game in town when it comes to publishing local literature.
On and off for more than 50 years, Lathrop High School has been producing “Goldstream,” a compilation of writing and art from the school’s students.
“I’ve been impressed with the work,” said the publication’s adviser, Nicole O’Donnell.
O’Donnell said 100 students submitted writing and art for “Goldstream,” and some submitted multiple works. The Lathrop creative writing teacher also kept some of her favorite student writings for the magazine.
Although she is the adviser, O’Donnell is quick to highlight the dedication of the three editors: Sean Olmstead, Stephanie L. Parrish and Maia Pierce. After an initial reading, Olmstead and Pierce narrowed the hundreds of submissions down to the 50 pieces chosen for the 2008 edition of “Goldstream.” Then it was Parrish’s turn to take the written pieces and art components and format it. Because “Goldstream” isn’t an official elective, the three editors had a busy spring semester.
But for Olmstead, all of this year’s hard work is nothing compared to putting out last year’s version of “Goldstream.” O’Donnell said she was unable to oversee the production because she was on maternity leave, but Olmstead wouldn’t let “Goldstream” go unproduced. He took it upon himself to lead an all-student effort to make “Goldstream 2007” happen.
Part of that student effort was Parrish, who spent a grueling two weeks working hectic hours to complete the magazine. But last year’s busy schedule didn’t scare her off when it came time to put the current edition of “Goldstream” together.
“It was a cool opportunity to make another cool product,” Parrish said.
