Man participating in cross-continent run dies after collapsing

Stumble It!ANCHORAGE -- An Anchorage man taking part in a cross-continent run that began in Eklutna collapsed and died.
Officials say 69-year-old Philip "Denty" Owens was one of more than 20 people taking part Thursday in the 2008 Peace and Dignity Journey.
Race organizers say Owens planned to take part only in the first-day ceremonies, knowing his body would not be able to make it the 47 miles to Chickaloon. However, he was among the runners on the Palmer Hay Flats. He collapsed north of the Matanuska River Bridge on the Glenn Highway.
The Peace and Dignity run is meant to strengthen ties between indigenous peoples of North, South and Central America. Runners cross more than 19,000 miles over a seven-month period.
