Alaska State Troopers arrested an armed North Pole man Saturday evening following a brief standoff.

Troopers arrived at the man’s home near Paige Avenue after receiving a 911 call at around 7:30 p.m. that said a gunshot had been heard. A special reaction team later arrested the man, identified as 28-year-old Robert Knudson, Alaska State Trooper Sgt. Rick Roberts said.

Roberts said troopers heard a gunshot shortly after arriving at the house, then saw a family member of Knudson leave the house with visible wounds. Troopers unsuccessfully tried to coax the man from the house before judging the situation to be dangerous enough to themselves and others to call for backup, Roberts said.

“That’s why we called the (special) team, to find a safe resolution to it,” he said.

Troopers eventually called in a nine-member Special Emergency Reaction Team to enter the house by force and subdue Knudson, who was arrested on four counts of assault and one count of weapons misconduct and taken to jail.
