North Pole buzzing for early Easter

Published Saturday, March 22, 2008

Easter is really early this year. The last time it was in the third week of March was in 1913 and the last time it was on March 22 was 1818. The next time it will be this early will be the year 2228 — 220 years from now. I don’t think any of us will be around.

In case you don’t know, Easter is always the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. The dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify Passover, which is why it moves around on our Roman calendar.

Garage sale

All the tables for Santa Seniors’ “Garage Sale for Garage Sale Connoisseurs” have been taken, but they are still accepting donations for the club’s tables. You can bring items to the Senior Center on Monday.

The garage sale will be at the Senior Center on Fifth Avenue on Friday from noon-6 p.m. and March 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, they will offer lunch, have a bake sale and are raffling off an afghan and a Mother’s Day basket. Information: 488-4663.  Poetry slam

Fairbanks Regional Health Center is hosting a poetry reading/poetry slam, to raise awareness of health issues. Poetry should be aimed at topics such as drugs and alcohol, pregnancy, AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, sexual assault, body image and similar subjects. Submissions will be accepted at College Coffeehouse until Monday. The event will be at College Coffeehouse March 29 at 8 p.m.

Sweet show

North Pole is in for a treat March 29 when the Sweet Adelines come to our fair city to present “How the West was Sung.” The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the North Pole High School auditorium and it should be great fun.

The show will also feature Earl Hughes, “Alaska’s Ambassador of Country Music,” and the North Pole High School choirs under the direction of Bruce Hanson.

If you can’t make this event, the Sweet Adelines will be performing Friday at 7:30 p.m. at West Valley High School.

The Sweet Adelines traditionally hold a spring concert to get tuned up before regional competition — this year in Spokane, Wash. — but this is the first time they’ve held a spring event in North Pole. Tickets can be purchased by calling Mary Anne at 456-6094 and will be sold at the door.

And finally…

We could learn a lot from crayons: Some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors — but they all exist very nicely in the same box.
