Alaska fire crews head to California

Published Wednesday, June 25, 2008

The state of Alaska and the Alaska Fire Service will send five emergency firefighting crews to California this morning to help battle fires that have spread across the state.

California already is hosting around 16,000 firefighters and 1,000 fire engines in the battle against the wildfires, according to the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center. The crews headed south are based in Tanacross, St. Michael, Ambler, Hooper Bay and Nondalton.

“There’s a wide range of experience on the crews,” said Maggie Rogers, an interagency wildland fire spokesperson. “Some of these firefighters have been on many fires in Alaska and in the Lower 48. Some of them, this will be their first fire.”

Rogers said the crews are already assigned to specific California fires, although those assignments could change upon arrival.
