Residents seek to repeal fluoride ordinance

Published Friday, June 20, 2008

Juneau residents succeeded in repealing a fluoridation ordinance in their city, and now Ronald Lee Warner II is trying to do the same in Fairbanks.

A divided Fairbanks City Council voted in March to continue adding fluoride to the water supply, rejecting a measure to repeal the ordinance.

Councilwoman Vivian Stiver introduced the ordinance to repeal the 48-year-old practice of fluoridating city water.

Some borough residents are now joining in on the city debate because their former water supplier, College Utilities, merged with Golden Heart Utilities and they are now receiving fluoridated water.

“This will be a city initiative; however, many borough residents will be watching closely because they purchase city water, or drink city water if they come to town to work or eat,” Warner said.

Warner believes the quality of Fairbanks water will be significantly improved.

“This will mark Fairbanks as a community that pays attention to science,” he said.

The American Dental Association reports that 67 percent of American communities have public fluoridated water.

The main controversy with fluoride stems from sodium fluoride, the main ingredient in rat poison. Fluoride in large doses can be toxic.

However, at an average of 1.0 parts per million, the amount of fluoride used in public water systems is well below toxic levels, according to a statement released by Golden Heart Utilities.

Studies and research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and by the American Dental Association have shown fluoridation to be one of the most effective public health measures to decrease dental-related illnesses and the costs associated with it. But the debate behind fluoridation of a public water supply, for Warner, isn’t necessarily about the potential health impacts on the body but rather on the lack of an option to have fluoridated water.

“It’s basically government-mandated medication, and there are many of us who don’t agree with that,” he said.

Warner submitted an initiative application to the city clerk earlier this week signed by 10 sponsors.

After sponsoring signatures are verified by the city, the 10 initiative sponsors will have 90 days to collect signatures from city residents petitioning that the fluoride issue be placed on the October ballot. The city of North Pole and the University of Alaska Fairbanks do not fluoridate their water supply.

    Kidney Foundation Drops Fluoridation Support
Fluoride may damage bones of kidney patients

New York – June 9 – The National Kidney Foundation withdrew its support of water fluoridation citing the 2006 National Research Council (NRC) report indicating that kidney patients are more susceptible to fluoride’s bone and teeth-damaging effects.

The kidney-impaired retain more fluoride and risk skeletal fluorosis (an arthritic-type bone disease), fractures and severe enamel fluorosis, which may increase the risk of dental decay, reports the NRC.

Fluoride is added to US water supplies ostensibly to reduce tooth decay. Fluoride is also in foods, beverages, drugs and dental products.

The National Kidney Foundation’s (NKF) former fluoridation position statement also carried surprising cautions. The NKF advised monitoring children’s fluoride intake along with patients with chronic kidney impairment, those with excessive fluoride intake, and those with prolonged disease. But NKF now admits, “exposure from food and beverages is difficult to monitor, since FDA food labels do not quantify fluoride content.”

The NKF’s April 15, 2008 statement goes further: “Individuals with CKD [Chronic Kidney Disease] should be notified of the potential risk of fluoride exposure.”

“More than 20 million Americans have CKD, and most don’t even know it. More than 20 million others are at increased risk for developing CKD,” NKF reports.

“There is consistent evidence that impairment of kidney function results in changes to the way in which fluoride is metabolized and eliminated from the body, resulting in an increased burden of fluoride,” concludes Kidney Health Australia. in a paper NKF
    recommends reading

NKF’s fluoridation support was dropped when a lawyer, an academic dentist and public health professional, Daniel Stockin, alerted it to NRC’s findings.

“An easy way to reduce the uncontrolled flow of fluoride into our bodies is to stop water fluoridation,” says attorney Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation. “But it takes political will to reject fluoridation.”

The American and Louisiana Dental Associations erroneously claim the National Kidney Foundation supports fluoridation. However, even the ADA reports that “decreased fluoride removal may occur among persons with severely impaired kidney function who may not be on kidney dialysis.”

Chronic kidney disease is a growing health problem in the United States occurring more often in African-American populations, says the Centers for Disease Control.

I don't want the damn flouride in my water. If you want it than swallow your toothpaste. The fools are the people who don't do the research and just assume the government knows best. I don't want my government overriding my vote because they know better. Thats not the way its supposed to work.

Dentists were proven to be fluoride ignorant of the new science when in Indiana Yoder K.M. 2007 on 17% understood how fluoride is a topical not ingested effect . Ingested fluoride only harms enamel with 51% (Pizzo 2007) showing multiple damage from fluoride toxicity. 11 EPA unions asked congress for an immediate moratorium and to have a goal of zero just like other cumulative toxins lead and arsenic.
The example in the article saying 1ppm is not toxic confuses rate with dose. Misinformation is nonscientific and because it is cumulative it is dose over time not that it does not kill you today with one glass. Many people now get to total dose to injure over time looking at government risk data. Slow but surely is how damage works with fluoride.
Please listen to Epa unions with 19 now asking for moratorium. Remember the FDA has never reviewed any ingested fluoride product ever. The 3000 studies stated do not contain one double blind and also never looked at the different more toxic H2SiF6 which 92% of cities use. That comes straight from pollution scrubbers with 20 plus contaminates not mentioned to the public and the phosphate also is used for uranium production. See fluoridealert.org Jim Schultz

See the following links. I'm inclined to believe experts in the field, before I believe your uneducated gut opinion. Maybe you should try educating yourself before dismissing people who care about their health. It is not for you and others like you to force people to be medicated against their will.

I see people who didn’t have fluoride in their water everyday. You really don’t want them to smile. If you don’t want it in your water…let me see… oh this is a hard one…. Don’t drink it. I love all the “evidence/propaganda” next thing you know they will be blaming global warming on cow farts. Oh wait they did. Why cant I buy tin roofing anymore this foil hat is making me itch. Some of the links I provided are reviews of scientiic studies--hardly propaganda. Maybe you should read a few of them before spouting your brand of propaganda. Evidence shows that flouridation of water does little for helping tooth decay. Bad teeth are the result of lots of things, so you shouldn't assume a person is drinking unfluorinated water. And if you want flouride, you can go out and buy some and drink it. The people flourinating the city's water are hardly pharmacists or doctors, so it is unacceptable that they dose anyone's water with any medication.

Exactly why does the government have a right to prescribe what is effectively a medicine by force to everyone via the water supply?

How is it supposed to regulate the dosage that people get? Is it supposed to control how much water people drink?

Are some of you seriously suggesting that people should have to buy bottled water to receive non-medicated water?

There have been so many studies that prove without doubt that we don't need fluoride in our drinking water anymore. The soil, all plant life, farm animals, indeed the water table, have all been saturated with fluoride for about 50 years. As the article states, it's present in pretty much everything we consume, because everything we consume has been saturated for decades.

How bout this, if you want to overdose on fluoride, eat a tube of toothpaste. Let us choose if we want to voluntarily consume poison in our water.

Britney Spears drank fluoridated water. It made her nutso. Dick Cheney did as well. Now he's creepy. The same goes for Hilary Clinton. Fluoride changed the color of Michael Jackson's skin. Fluoride made Elton John gay and influenced his decision to come to Fairbanks and try to recruit all of us to his sick, fluoridated lifestyle. Fluoride made Barack Obama join his church. Fluoride made Barack Obama quit his church. Fluoride made me bald, irreverent, and obnoxious.

Poor Vic Kohring, an honest and incorruptible representative, drank fluoridated water, lost his self-control, and took bribes from Bill Allen. Then a jury, drunk on fluoride and therefore blinded to the TRUTH, convicted this poor, innocent victim of evil governmental fluoridation schemes.

Fluoride, applied to the outer surface of helicopters, turns them black.

Fluoride caused voters in Florida to get confused by their ballots in 2000 and accidentally send George W. Bush to the White House (in fact, the proper spelling of Florida is “Fluoridea”). Subsequently, the five members of the Supreme Court who favored Bush in “Bush v. Gore” drank fluoridated tap water, while the other four stuck with purified spring water from plastic bottles (wait, won't drinking from plastic bottles kill you as well?).

In the weeks prior to 9/11, the federal government loaded the World Trade Center with huge caches of fluoride. Coincidence? Saddam Hussein was known to drink fluoridated water before making important decisions about which countries to attack and which ethnic minorities to cleanse. Bush invaded Iraq in order to seize that county's unreported stockpiles of fluoride. Iran is in the process of refining weapons-grade fluoride, while North Korea has already successfully tested an F-bomb.

The French oppose fluoride. What does that tell you?

Fluoride is the greatest evil on earth. The apple that Eve ate and shared with Adam was first rinsed in fluoridated water, plunging the world into sin. We’re whistling past the graveyard, folks. If we don’t rid ourselves of fluoride, sooner or later everyone on earth will die!

Galileo was put to death for not recanting his statements to the church that the world wasn't flat. They were absolutely certain that it was, and anyone who claimed otherwise was being pursued by black helicopters, wearing a tin-foil beanie, or, at bare minimum, was a blasphemer.

If one denounces past, now apparently incorrect ADA claims re. flouride, are they a blasphemer? I'll inquire with the Pope the next time he's here.

Not all of what is to be known is yet known, either medically or scientifically, regardless of how smart we think we are, how informed we believe we are, and regardless of the anecdotal 'evidence' that we view subjectively, day-to-day.. Doctors frequently still scratch their heads, and reply, "Gee, I'm not sure," before sending that $300.00 bill for the office visit.

Science corrects itself regularly, just as some of the recent warnings from the CDC (????), et al. that children under 2 shouldn't receive flouridated water.

That's a recent warning which didn't exist when flouridation was the 'new path to dental enlightenment.'

Dr. Curmudgeon!! You're bald??!! That's it!! I'm throwing out the old, stale, pineapple-flavored flouride tablets in the cupboard.. Seriously, I don't need them any more for my kids, due to my children receiving the more effective topical applications via tooth-paste, which I've instructed them not to swallow.

But now that I know that you're bald, and that it's related to flouridated water, I'm not even throwing the tablets into MY trash, but rather spiking someone else's trash with them... I no longer want them here.

Seriously, though, I'd rather my family receive the effective topical flouride treatment, rather than the ineffective treatment via unnecessary ingestion, which appears to have raised concerns about bone growth and health.

Most folks that consider ingesting toxins think twice about letting others mix 'em up for them. Or at least they should.

The simple fact is that fluoride is the only cause of ugly dental flurosis enamel damage. We are now above the 50 % mark for children being overdosed on fluoride while teeth are forming and enamel is formed being porous brittle with mottled discolored with chalky white that often turns brown ,yellow or worse over time. Canadas leading dental researcher Hardy Limeback DDS. more costly ugly damage from fluoride then even the most lofty exagerated claims of cavity reduction would give in savings. Not a single researcher can now show that ingested fluoride reduces cavities but all the data shows this huge increase in dental fluorosis. The York 2000 study showed fluoridation increased dental fluorosis from 15% to 48% with 12.5% being ugly enough for cosmetic restoration. Look at some kids teeth anbd in fluoridated cities you will see lots of this damage. The Burt 2007 Detroit study showed long fluoridated Detroit had almost 100% of 5 year olds with cavities as die was fluoridated water soda, and chips etc(lots of junk food) Almost no fruits and vegetables. He citied poor nutrition ,no dental care and poor hygiene. The policy of fluoridation is a total lie causing damage with no benefit. This is a policy that is based on faked studies and a refusal to look at science. You can build a bias study to prove anything if you have total control. Calcium, magnesium. are needed for healthy teeth not fluoride. The scientists behind the talking suits at the EPA 19 Unions now demand immediate moratorium and to have a goal of ZERO just like other cumulative toxins lead and arsenic. Most developed countries ban or never fluoridated and have reduced cavities as much or more and sure do not have as much ugly dental fluorosis. The real issue here is about the many other proven negative health effects that we often write off to aging only. Fluoridealert.org or waterloowatch.com Jim Schultz

If anyone does a fair bit of research on this topic, one will see that fluoride does indeed pose a health risk. But aside from that argument, the government should NOT be mandating medication to the people. How does the government know if I have a problem with my kidneys? What if all I drink is water all day long, I would get twice as much fluoride as another person (not like soda, beer, and bottled water dont have fluoride).

Studies show an increase in thyroid problems in the US. Look around you in public, how many people are over weight or obese? There seems to be a lot of commercials advertising medication to help a low functioning thyroid.

One of the things fluoride affects is the thyroid gland, not to mention the bones, kidneys, brain (it leeches lead from the solder in pipes), and a whole list of other things. www.Fluoridealert.org is one of the best websites to date compiling all sorts of fluoride information, and it cites very credible scientific articles about every thing we talk about. www.fluoridealert.org

Blue collar Ron---Actually products like beer, soda and bottled water often have just as much fluoride as the tap stuff because they just use the tap to make the product. Things like canned soups ,cereals ,grape juice often have much higher levels because they are cooked down leaving the fluoride or pesticides with 2ppm even in potatoes because the use fluoride pesticides. Many vegetables can have much higher levels because of pesticides and fumigation at processing facilities is now done with Profume which is the same gassing agent used to tent for termites. It leaves crazy high fluoride residuals and was just started in 2004 so we do not know what the results will be yet. Thank you for your support but it really is not just about water or just about kids teeth even though 51% now have multiple teeth with fluoride enamel damage. The Native peoples in Alaska were part of a silent experment to give 4.0ppm fluoride in attempt to reduce dental problems and the result was 100% of the kids having dental fluorosis and much of it the very ugly moderate and severe. No less cavities either as ingested has no benefit but it should give many more of the negative health effects in all that doctors would not put their finger on. It will destroy health in a chronic cumulative slow way over time just like lead or arsenic over time. Half or more of every intake is removed by kidneys if they are healthy except by babies, seniors or diabetics or people with kidney disease who retain much more to be stored in bones and tissue. The kidneys contain the second highest level in the body organs. Rat studies have many times Varner 1998 shown that fluoride destroys kidneys even at 1ppm and helps carry aluminum into the brain for memory issues. Rats are like cockroaches ,very resistant to killing but 80% died within the year from 1ppm fluoride in the water and all with destroyed kidneys. India has loads of studies showing people damaged from water as low as 1ppm especially when nutrition is poor and lacking in calcium. Calcium and vitamin C both counter act the negative effects said the Health department in 1993 study results. This is mostly government studies that just get ignored because of a strong lobby. Fluoride was the one size fits all cheap cure-a total lie proven by bias designed study after study. The York 200 review said not a single of the thousands of studies claimed was high quality and non bias. When you count the marbles you can get what ever count you want. To admit negative results ends funding often midstream. Please think out of the box and take a new look. In the 80's over 400 schools were exposed to fluoridation at 4.0ppm and up to 4.9 ppm in a toxic expermental failure not shared with the public. Canada had exposed native peoples with up to 5ppm(very toxic by their own standards) in a failed attempt to see if a lot more fluoride might work as normal amounts did not. We are the unpaid, uninformed rats in this study. Jim
