The National Weather Service in Fairbanks extended a small stream advisory Thursday after rains Wednesday night and Thursday raised water levels in some streams.

The advisory is for small rivers and tributaries along the Steese Highway from east of Cleary Summit to Central, along Chena Hot Springs Road from Two Rivers east to Chena Hot Springs and west of the Charley and Goodpaster rivers.

Smaller rivers and tributaries respond to rainfall more dramatically than larger rivers.

The original advisory ended at 2 p.m. but the weather service extended it to 10 p.m. Thursday. The Birch Creek near Miller House Stream stream gauge along the Steese Highway has risen more than 2 feet since Wednesday.

Bob Fisher, lead forecaster, said the creek was at its flood stage of 44 feet and could go over the banks. He said all other stream gauge were well below their flood stage.

There have been no reports of road obstruction from the Department of Transportation due to the rains.

If FNSB participated in the CSR program through FEMA, flood insurnace policies could get discounts between 5% - 45%, depending on how involved the FNSB gets.
People in Salcha paying $3100.00 a year for flood insurance, would save about $155.00 a year.
Nome and Kenai participate, why can't FNSB!
