Tanana River near Delta under flood warning

Published Monday, July 28, 2008

Monday's heavy rain throughout the Interior has prompted flood warnings and flood watches at various locations across the Tanana Valley.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for tributaries of the Tanana River from Healy Lake to Harding Lake, and a flood watch for the Salcha River with the possibility of flooding.

A flood watch is also posted for the tributaries of the Yukon River in the upper Tanana Valley and 40-Mile country.

Farther south, there is a flood warning from Mount Deborah to Mentasta Pass in the Alaska Range.

Delta Junction registered 2.25 inches of rainfall by 11 p.m. Monday evening. Rain started in the early morning and increased as the day wore on, with the heaviest downpour in the afternoon. Similar amounts in nearby areas also were reported.

About 40 miles southeast of Delta Junction, an automatic weather gauge at George Creek (elevation 1,525 feet) measured Monday's rainfall at 2.54 inches.

Near Salcha, 2.2 inches of rainfall were recorded, and at Two Rivers an inch of rain fell, as reported a weather service storm spotter.

Between 7:30-9:30 p.m. the Fairbanks International Airport registered three-tenths of an inch of rainfall.

Late Monday evening, Ted Fathauer, lead forecaster at the National Weather Service office in Fairbanks, said the rainstorms, which were flowing over the Interior from the northwest, were on their way out and pushing south toward the Gulf of Alaska.

But don’t expect to see much sun as the clouds thin out. More rain is headed our way.

“We have a good shot at seeing some sunshine today, but very, very briefly,” Fathauer said. “More rain is coming in from the west, but it will not be as heavy as this.”

As of 12:10 a.m. Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory in the Fairbanks area. According to the NWS, a flood advisory means that stream flow is elevated or that ponding has occurred in the vicinity. (http://pafg.arh.noaa.gov/)

yep - the Fair is opening so the skies will too. Better get the rain slickers on those 4-H kids! I wonder how many times/for how many days of the run it has rained in the history of the Fair. . . Sure seems like a lot.

Ednotheroad-speaking of 4-H-sure would be nice to get a covered arena for those horse kids. Seems every year they get drenched. And no one wants to go out in the rain to watch. Fairboard has always given reasons for not doing so.
    Good luck kids!
