FAIRBANKS — The Fairbanks City Council approved a resolution to accept a bid from Great Northwest Inc. for the Cushman Street Traffic Revision Project. The project will convert Cushman Street from Gaffney to 10th Avenue into a two-way road. The bid was in the amount of $436,184.
The council went on to approve a second resolution to accept a second bid from Great Northwest Inc. for Phase 1 of the Second Avenue Sidewalk Improvement Project in the amount of $358,755. This project involves removing barriers from pedestrian corridors with major pedestrian traffic generators.
The funding from this project comes from the HUD 2007 and 2008 Community Development Block Grant.

Isn't that lovely? I'm all for that, seriously.
Now while the "powers that be" at City Hall are all out trying this venture on for size, admirable as it is (gonna be a mess early on...two way traffic that is)....how about you all see about the OTHER SIDE of South Cushman Street that already has two-way traffic flow.
Remember that side?
It's interesting that a great deal of well-traveled local roadways were at least re-paved this summer, but South Cushman Street remains the very same wretched mess, save for the usual cosmetic patchwork jobs done along that way on a regular basis.
In fact, just this week, I witnessed City Public Works workers re-paving a South Fairbanks SIDE street just off 27th Avenue.
But still no such love for South Cushman.
And with winter fast approaching (oops! did I say that?) we're facing months (again)of playing that annual "game show" called "Dodge the Potholes Along South Cushman," always a popular "show" until you've hit said holes and ran the risk of damaging your vehicle in some way.
Oh! and hopefully traffic flow isn't an excuse for not taking care of it.
The Summer, 2008 Steese Highway/Airport Way/College Road/Trainor Gate Road saga worked everyone's nerves, but we survived.
We'll do the same with South Cushman Street.
Just a thought......
south cushman will look like that (just like it has for twenty something years I know about) until the property owners along cushman start realizing that they need a widened road and it will not be done until they relinquish a little of their street frontage. Collectively, the South Cushman buisness' have staved off the city's efforts to widen and fix the road so that they dont lose their frontage, until they do why would the city perform anything above and beyond a quick fix? The battle of the wills is what you hit in those potholes on South Cushman, not a lazy city that neglects that area.

Would some one please explane what the heck this means? Will that include the drunk laying on the sidewalk?
JB!! Thanks for the knowledge. Even after almost 23 years here, I learn something new everyday. Incredible......
Turn cushman into a 6-lane, newly paved road with a new bridge all the way from the Johnansen/college connection to Van Horn Rd. Convert Airport Way into a nice 8-lane super-road, make University a 6-Lane road and turn College Rd. into another 6-lane. Build em all heavy duty while your at it, and then lets start on Farmer's Loop road. We can become our own mini-houston yet!
Almost a half million for two blocks(Gaffney to 10th)? Maybe a bad location for the fire station from the get go.
What is going to be accomplished by making 2 blocks two-way? Cushman was two-way all the way before and the powers that be decided to make it one-way. That has worked fine for the majority. I believe the simple plan of one-way streets has worked well for the city so why spend money foolishly when so many more projects deserve consideration. Put your brains back in drive!
this is one of the stupidest ideas yet-all major downtowns work on a one way street scheme. works quite well-lets just put more traffic through downtown...dumb donkeys
This is part of a bigger plan to make it one way again in 25 years.
What exactly are we paying .5 million for? Why would it cost so much?
I wonder how much it cost to make into a one way 25 years ago?
It's like your dog humping my leg, he likes it but it dosn't do nothing for me.
Cushman was made one-way because the Steese didn't exist. Now that there is a highway that will take people north and south... Cushman can not go back to two way and actually start to service downtown. The one way streets aren't working well for the businesses right now, traffic moves fast, it is cumbersome to get around. If you did some research, one way streets make people travel over 50% more to get to where they want to go. This isn't foolish and it is apart of a bigger plan to help downtown. You probably all complained when it went one way too!!
1/2 a million?
Get your dog off my leg.
It's not the one way streets that are hurting business downtown it's the PARKING! Right now we spend more money on gas for driving around and around the blocks looking for parking. Instead of spending all the funds for the street realignment more parking can be provided.
Use the money to FIX South Cushman...not make 2 blocks one way!! I avoid driving South Cushman because of it's condition! Suppose South Cushman could be left 'as is' and offer defensive driving courses on it? just a thought. FIX SOUTH CUSHMAN, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!
