JUNEAU -- An airline serving small communities in Southeast Alaska has been grounded by the federal government for an indefinite period of time because of continuing maintenance problems.
Mike Fergus is a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. He says the agency served an emergency revocation Thursday of L.A.B. Flying Service's operating permit.
Fergus told Juneau radio station KINY several safety problems have come to the agency's attention over the last two months.
L.A.B. director of operations Eric Bennett says the shutdown came as a surprise, and they had no indication anything was in the works. The company can't resume flying operations until it is issued a new certificate.
Bennett says their primary concern right now is with their passengers booked during the busy tourist season and their employees.
L.A.B. serves Juneau, Haines, Skagway, Petersburg, Ketchikan, Craig and Klawock on Prince of Wales Island, Excursion Inlet, Gustavus, Hoonah and Kake
