FAIRBANKS -- The smoky haze around Fairbanks most likely is coming from a fire in the Manley Hot Springs area that was sparked by lightning on Monday.

The Blind Luck Fire has burned 3,780 acres about 34 miles southwest of the hot springs, according to the Alaska Fire Service.

While lightning started a slew of fires across the state, recent damp weather has helped keep fire danger down and damp conditions should continue through next week.

The Alaska Fire Service is monitoring the Blind Luck Fire, but not staffing it.

“It’s burning on a limited area,” said Doug Stockdale, spokesman for the fire service. “There are no structures in the area.”

The 2008 fire season in Alaska has been quiet, according to the fire service.

“Our last report indicates just under 60,000 acres and 308 fires, so a very mild year for us,” Stockdale said.

Forecasters said smoke from the Blind Luck Fire should clear up by Saturday.

“This afternoon we’ll get some scattered thunderstorms,” said Joe Kryston, local forecaster for the National Weather Service.

“Tomorrow the weather should shift more southeast so we won’t see much of the smoke.”

Fire danger looks low into next week, he said, with temperatures in the high 60s to low 70s and a chance of scattered showers each day.
