Nanooks ink two more ice recruits

FAIRBANKS — First-year Alaska Nanooks hockey coach Dallas Ferguson has added a standout goaltender and an offensive defenseman to the Nanooks roster for the 2008-09 season.
Ferguson announced Tuesday that goaltender Scott Greenham of Addison, Ontario and defenseman Justin Daigle of Calgary, Alberta, will join the Nanooks this fall.
Greenham is a 6-foot-2, 182-pound left-handed goalie who had an outstanding season with the Oakville Blades of the Ontario Provincial Hockey League.
“Scott has great size and athleticism in the net,” Ferguson said in a press release. “His style is very similar to (Nanook senior goalie) Chad Johnson in that he is very technical and structured in his movements. He is a student of the position.”
Greenham posted a 27-3 record in 35 regular season appearances, tied for fifth in goals against average at 2.32, was third in wins, tied or second in save percentage at .923 and tied for fifth in shutouts with three.
He backstopped the Blades to the OPJHL title, the Dudley Hewitt Cup crown and to their first-ever RBC Cup appearance.
He went 16-5, with a .933 save percentage in Oakville’s run through the Provincial Junior A playoffs. His wins and saves (656) totals ranked him above all other goalies.
“Scott is a very impressive young man and has the attitude I’m looking for,” Ferguson said. “With the signing of Scott, we have really solidified our goaltending for next season and for years to come.”
Greenham was selected to the OPJHL All Stars North-West Team. Last month, the Ontario Hockey Association recognized him as the top goaltending prospect in the OHA this past season.
Don’t let Daigle’s size fool you.
At 5-9 and 166 pounds, he is the smallest Alaska defenseman since Felipe Larranaga, who played from 2000-2004, but Daigle packs a big offensive punch.
He was the top scoring defenseman in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Okotoks Oilers last season, with 15 goals and 39 assists good for 54 points in 57 games. He had eight power-play and three game-winning goals. Daigle was an AJHL Team South All-Star.
“He is a very dynamic defenseman who will bring an offensive presence to our blue line,” Ferguson said. “He is very comfortable running the power play in a variety of formations and has a great ability to create offense without the puck by jumping into open ice and reading the play.”
Ferguson said he liked what he saw in Daigle during the recruiting process last winter.
“He is a great kid that has a lot of passion for the game and his teammates,” Ferguson said. “As much as I was impressed with his athletic ability, I was equally impressed with his character.”
