Big inning lifts Alaska Goldpanners to key victory over Peninsula Oilers

Published Saturday, July 5, 2008

The Alaska Goldpanners came out swinging on Friday night in Kenai and never let up.

The Panners used an eight-run outburst in the fourth inning to grab a 9-0 lead and went on to register a 13-5 triumph over the host Peninsula Oilers.

The victory kept the Panners (7-4) 0.036 percentage points ahead of the Mat-Su Miners (9-6) in the Alaska Baseball League standings. The Miners completed their stay in Fairbanks with a 6-5 over the Athletes in Action Fire.

The Goldpanners have a .636 winning percentage, while the Miners are at .600.

The Panners, who opened a five-game ABL road trip on Friday with a 9-7 victory over the Anchorage Bucs on Friday night, increased their lead to 11-0 in the fifth and cruised home to victory.

The 13 runs was the most the Oilers pitching staff has allowed in a game this season.

Center fielder Nick Ciolli, right fielder Matt Newman, catcher Jeremy Gillan, first baseman Ryan Heroy and shortstop Jake Dunning all had two hits apiece through the first 4 1/3 innings.

Newman and second baseman had each scored twice, while Ciolli, Gillan and left fielder Thomas Myers had each driven in two runs.

The Panners banged out eight hits and took advantage of two Kenai errors during their big fourth-inning outburst.

Other details from the game were not available Friday evening.

The Panners play the Oilers again at 7 tonight and wrap up the three-game series with a 2 p.m. contest Sunday.

Alaska plays at the Mat-Su Miners on Monday night, before returning to Fairbanks to open a three-game series with the Anchorage Bucs next Wednesday at Growden Memorial Park.

The Bucs begin a four-game series against the Fire at 7 tonight at Growden.

In other ABL action Friday, the Anchorage Glacier Pilots defeated the Anchorage Bucs, 7-6 in 12 innings.

The second game of that doubleheader was still in progress at press time.
