Bristol Palin gives birth to son named Tripp

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The teenage daughter of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, whose quest for the vice presidency began to go downhill the day she announced the pregnancy, has given birth to a son, a magazine reported Monday.
Bristol Palin, 18, gave birth to Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston on Sunday, People magazine reported online. He weighed 7 pounds, 4 ounces. Colleen Jones, the sister of Bristol's grandmother, told the magazine that "the baby is fine and Bristol is doing well."
The governor's office said it would not release information because it considers the baby's birth a private family matter.
The father is Levi Johnston, a former hockey player at Alaska's Wasilla High School.
Palin announced on Sept. 1, the first day of the Republican National Convention, that her unwed daughter was pregnant. The campaign issued a statement saying Bristol "and the young man" would get married.
Levi Johnston's mother eventually disclosed that her 18-year-old son was the father. The following week, the young man attended the convention in St. Paul, Minn. when Palin accepted the nomination as John McCain's running mate.
The announcement that Bristol, 17 at the time, was pregnant immediately drew concerns that it could damage Palin's credibility as a religious conservative. It also foreshadowed a troubled campaign for Palin, who drew large crowds at rallies but was criticized for her composure in news interviews and for her experience level.
Sherry Johnston, Levi's mother, said in October that Bristol and her son were considering a summer wedding.
Levi Johnston told The Associated Press that month that he and Bristol loved each other and wanted to get married. Johnston, who dropped out of high school to take a job on the North Slope oil fields as an apprentice electrician, said he was a little shocked to learn that Bristol was pregnant but quickly warmed to the idea of being a father.
He said the two had planned to get married even before Bristol became pregnant.
Johnston, an avid hunter, hinted at the time that they were expecting a boy. He said he was already looking forward to taking the boy hunting and fishing.
Johnston's mother was arrested on felony drug charges this month after state troopers served a search warrant at her Wasilla home. According to authorities, she sent text messages to two police informants in which she discusses making drug transactions involving OxyContin, a strong prescription painkiller.
Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd, have five children ranging in age from Trig, 7 months, to Track, 19. In between are Willow, 14; Piper, 7; and Bristol.

Oh, what joyful good news! Glad mom & baby are doing well.
hopefully people will keep it clean. Not one of you out their got to pick your biological parents. May this child have a long and wonderful life.
Tripp?
Why does not every one wish the baby and her parnets well...I hope the baby is healthy and happy, and it is good to hear MOM is doing good.
What wonderful news!!! Best wishes to the entire family, what a beautiful late Christmas present.
i commented some days ago on the article about levi's mom getting arrested for drug charges that the next time i wanted to hear the name "johnston" was with levi and bristol's baby's name in front of it.
well, i got my christmas present.
good luck, parents
Tripp. Trippy name, huh? But I kinda like it, and it seems to fall in well with the Palin baby-naming style. Me and Tripp share the same birthday, woo-hoo!
Did anyone see that photo of Bristol on the msn.com article? She looked positively radiant. What a beautiful woman. Bristol, Levi, and Tripp, I think they'll all do just fine. I sense that fortune is smiling on all three of them.
Thinking a little more, I think that the name is *highly* appropriate. I mean, how many women come out of obscurity and are thrust into the national spotlight because of their pregnancies? As Jerry Garcia would say, "what a long, strange trip it's been." And the trip has barely started yet.
So, Tripp? Very symbolic, and appropriate, in my book. Kinda grows on ya, after a few minutes. :)
Sooo...this is the same Levi Johnston who on his MyFace (or whatever space it was) said he did not want to have kids? I guess one might change one's mind when the governor is breathing down your neck....
I heard something about it being a fake myspace page, dobie. Easily enough accomplished, anymore.
Something tells me Levi is really into starting a family and being a dad. He and Bristol are young, but they'll figure it all out. They'll make good choices for their family's future. And they've got a *lot* of people's goodwill backing them up.
Be happy for them, dobie. Cuz they are.
I'm sure they named him after our roadtrip. See roadie, being loyal to queenie paid off!
If you hurry down to Wal*Mart you can probably get a copy of People mag to add to your Palin memorabilia collection.
dog
They'll make good choices for their family's future.
Ya sure. Instead of going to a welfare doctor (prividing there are any) Grandma Palin will hook them up with Doctors none of us would be able to see. If mom n dad like getting high more than getting up three times a night to a crying kid, they'll just dump him off on whoever babysits Willow, Piper, and Trig.
Although I absolutely do not condone kids having kids, I do wish them the best and hope for Tripp's sake they are able to see the upcoming marriage through at least until he is 18 and in college or out on his own. They only have a 50/50 shot or worse these days but I am hoping for the best.
So, Good luck to the future Johnstons. Don't leave Tripp alone with Grandma Johnston until she has been through rehab and has been clean and in a program for a year, and congratulations to Grandma and Grandpa Palin and all the Aunts and Uncles. Imagine having an Uncle that is only 7 months older than you are. Oh well.
So she named her two kids Trig and Tripp? Ugh.
Congratulations Bristol and Levi. Hang on tight cause you're in for one long, and sometime bumpy ride. Enjoy your new journey as parents. Remain friends, and never forget to take a little time to enjoy the view. :)
Good luck Bristol and Levi. They're going to need it. Glad the baby is apparently healthy...
Have Prospector and glacierles been in to whine about Palin persecution yet?
My vote for the baby's name is 'Prop' or 'Landing Gear'.
Isn't Tripp the older brother's name? The one in the Army in Iraq? I've known a lot of people who named their children after parents or grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and yes, siblings...
Tripp, Roadtrip, naaaa. But I would be honored.
It's Track. Last sentence of article. I sure hope those two kids get away from their mommies and get their own lives together, geez.
So let me get this straight - baby daddy's mama just got busted for peddling drugs and they went out and named the baby Tripp?? Surely 'ol SP could have come up with something better! My vote was for Crystal.......
Doug---
I think that you are correct.
I think it's a great custom when babies are named after family members. It's such a cool idea, I guess people all over the world do it.
Of course liberals probably name their babies Brittney, or Madonna, or MoonZap. Peacebaby, or Alfalfa Sprouts. I'll betcha there's a huge number of babies named Barack this coming year.
Ooops. Yota is correct. Track, not Tripp. What a dumb name.
Congratulations Bristol and Levi. Best of Luck!
cool name. I wonder if she is a fan of Dirty Sexy Money? Tripp is a name on that show. Love it.
Oh my ..you guys need to really get your own lives! Leave the proud new parents alone! Congrats to all the family=) a new healthy baby is a wonderfull blessing, I hope you dont let all these idiots upset you in your time of joy.I had my first son at 18 and Im possitive i was a better parent at that age than most parents are at any age! snuggle that new one lots! they grow way to fast! and no matter what people say you cant spoil a child with snuggles!
"Is she tripping?" Ha ha ha ha ha ha hahahahahahahahahahahaha.
How do you come up with this stuff? WOW!
Congrats to Bristol and Levi. Even if he had a Facebook page saying he did not want children at his age things change.
Bristol is a beautiful woman and hopefully they will be able to work things out. The odds are against them but I wish them luck.
I think Tripp is a fine name and much better then traditional.
Pat
why is everyone soo criticizing of a name?like trip?we all take one before?right?why not a name like marsha!@!marsha!!marsha!!brady huh?come on people,,,david kaveolook
dobie, I like to think it is another young man accepting the responsibility of parenting. Best wishes to the parents and their new arrival.
LadyNYC I got to see the Grateful Dead live at Filmore East in '69, both shows. It was and still is a long strange trip.
Paval - get a grip. Trig is Sarah's baby and Tripp is Bristol's baby - think!
1967- what are you smoking tonight - I just hope they CAN afford to make ends meet, not like most children having children, who end up not married so they can get welfare...yeah Denali Kid Care...giving all AK children the right to have children and WE get to pay for it until their children turn 19! Did ya get that 1967?
Congrats to the Palin & Johnston families!
Don't worry I am sure Levi has already got a 70 grand gig up on the slope. It helps if you have the right family connections. Congrats and good luck kids!
i dont care them palins have some wierd names i bet they catch hell at school with names like them i know what i would be doin on my 18th bday congratulations to all the mothers who gave birth today not just the palin kid
baby has a hot grandma!
Doesn't anyone see that he was named Tripp because he "tripped" up one of the most controversial campaigns in american history?
Congratulations Levi & Bristol. Nice addition to their soon to be growing family. Haters of children who would not punish your daughters with a baby, how very sad for you and your kids.
welcome tripp!!!
Opsamk, the baby is completely innocent. If anybody "tripped" well, it certainly wasn't the baby, that's for sure.
Poppa, *REALLY????* You saw the Dead in '69???
Oh, man, I'm soooo jealous! Way cool!
mandy04 - Bristol is actually eligible for more benefits if they remain unmarried than if they get married. Single moms and their kids are all eligible for medicare/medicaid (I can never remember which one). However, if they get married only the kids are eligible.
I hope the happy couple gets 100% of the money from People magazine for the exclusive coverage. They will need the cash. It would be sad if agents, relatives or other vultures got a percentage.
Hopefully Our Governor has solved her personal problems and can return to work full time as our Governor.
I know she's had a rough time these last few months... being a failed VP nominee, her unmarried teen daughter becoming pregnant, her child's future mother-in-law being busted for dealing drugs, her future son-in-law dropping out of high school, her own unexpected baby, dealing with her new baby's disabilities, her own daughter dropping out of high school, falling for that gawdawful radio prank, causing herself and the entire state of Alaska supreme humiliation for the many weeks she was on the campaign trail, the whole Troopergate affair, her church being targeted for arson, stumping for a racist Georgia senator, having her 2009 calendar be the top seller at amazon.com as the best gag gift of the holiday season, and worst of all, having to give back those gorgeous ruby red high heels to the RNC. It's been rough on Our Governor. But now that her first grandchild has been born to her underage, unmarried daughter, and now that her daughter has become possibly engaged to the son of a drug dealer, I hope that maybe Governor Palin can get some rest. Perhaps she will actually show up for work in Juneau in time to work with the legislature on January 20. Hope the legislators don't have to get out their "Where's Sarah?" buttons again this year.
Congrats Bristol and Levi! Good luck as parents!
Seriously people? Tripp? It's not like there aren't worse names out there. How about Sunday and Apple? Can't we all just be happy for the family and wish them luck rather than critisizing them?
Hmm. I just noticed the kids full name. Looks like mom's family got to give him his first name and dad got to give him part one of his middle name.
CONGRATULATIONS, Bristol, Levi & Tripp.
What a Lovely Family you are!
AKmom4ever:
I Absolutaly agree..., You will Never Spoil a Baby/Child with Snuggles & Love, Ever!!!

if it was linked to his email account... not so easily accomplished. especially without his knowledge. someone made it private right after his name got out... why would anyone *but* him make it private? there is no incentive for a fake one to be made unreadable.
there is a HUGE incentive for a real one to be made unreadable.

holy cognitive bias. so "liberals" have all the crazy names huh? and you are positing this incredibly original theory in an article about the single stupidest kitschy fake-name family in recent popular culture?
if you want to go there... okay... let's.
Brittney : form of 'Brittany' the english name for the french province of Bretagne. named for the Britons that live in that region. since it literally means 'From Briton'. the name in its core form is over 1000 years old. it started becoming a popular girls name in the 1970s. that was 30+ years ago.
Madonna : in addition to the obvious early latin meaning as another name for Mary - mother of Christ... it also means 'my lady' in italian. the latin usage alone obviously makes this name even older than the already ancient name of Brittney.
MoonZap : this is you *finally* coming up with something about on the level with the Palins. took you 3 tries though. and even then... you couldn't even be entirely original about it. you just lopped a few syllables off of Frank Zappas' daughters name. Moon Unit Zappa... who goes by Moon Zappa. you just bunched those two together... and took off the '-pa' on the end. quite the original and imaginative thinker you are! she was born in 1967. that is over 40 years ago. up with current events too i see.
Peacebaby : stupid name. does anyone you know have it? cause the Palins *do* have kids named 'Trig' and 'Track'.
Alfalfa Spouts : this represents the breadth and scope of your imagination? really? wow. again... do you know anyone with this name?
so basically. what you came up with for 'craaaaazy liberal names' is barely even close to being truly outrageous and a ridiculous name. then you listed a vegetable as your final killer punch-line. bravo. *golf claps*
[continued]
let's move on...
Track - 3 different baby name search engines. "Your search did not match any names." ... wiki lists nothing evenly remotely similar to a name in the "Track" listing. why? because it isn't a name.
Trig - form of Trygg. a scandinavian surname. can't find how old it it. appears to be an incidental comic book character when used as a first name (and also still as Trygg). short of the short-form of trigonometry... nothing.
Tripp - 3 different baby name search engines. "Your search did not match any names." ... wiki lists the somewhat common usage for a "III" as in shortened version of 'triple'. though spelled 'Trip'. then it lists 'Tripp' as a surname. 3 towns named Tripp... and a "Herman T. Tripp" ... maybe? mayor of Juneau in 1906? still a surname used as first name... which is an annoyingly cliched fad these days. very liberal.
there is 3. bristol / piper / willow are at least *vaguely* normal.
admit it. the names that the Palin family uses are right up there is the same league as your supposedly hated 'craaaaaazy liberal names'... you are just too blinded by rote partisanship to recognize it yourself.
want to know what some *truly* crazy names are?
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/08121...
willing to bet those are more your type of wholesome folk.
What a delight this warm little bundle of joy must be, particularly now on cold winter nights. It's a tinier portion yet but this child has ties to some of the oldest peoples on earth. Arctic cultures revere children above all else and it's always amazed me how the Palins are such a close-knit family. If they did not know this ancient tradition they have surely lived it.
Congratulations to Bristol & Levi and all their families.
Poor Ol'Uncie Trig, knocked out the lime light by his nephew,as soon as you can crawl Trig,GET OUT!
x23---
Please calm down. The names were meant in jest. Actually, I did end up criticising the name Tripp as well, but by then you were obviously seeing red, and preparing your "You must like Nazis" comments.
You'll find it easier to walk around if you remove the stick from your fundament.
Grrr....
Leave it to Pavel to try to resurrect one of the more malicious myths created by Palin-bashers during the recent campaign.
Bristol chose life for her son -- therein lies the greatest blessing.
In P-E Obama's words "You know my mother had me when she was 18..." His mother chose his life, too.
I totally understand where the name came from - my daughter was conceived on a "trip[p]" as well... ;-)
Happy Holidays to All!
Unwed teenage drop out gives birth.
This is a headline?
And who named the kid? The parents, or grandma?
Yea! Here's to unwed teen moms and babies born out of wedlock! Way to go kids!
must be a slow news day. a child is born every .6 seconds, who cares.
I'm more interested in the news that my two-week-old grandson is in the children's hospital in St Louis because he has a yet-unidentified skin rash that the experts can't figure out. :(
Welcome to our world, little Tripp.
Awwwwww Geeez Newsminer, did you have to go into the story about Levi's mom? Can't you just tell the good news and keep it separate from the negative things? What if they wanted to clip the news article? Man Alive the media is getting soooooooo mean.
Congrats to Bristol & Levi. Levi please reconsider getting an education. It can make a BIG DIFFERENCE IN INCOME$$$$.
.... or they could just sell their baby photos to People Magazine for up to $300,000 .... oops, too late ...... And considering that Granny Palin is worth more than $1 mil and that the baby daddy jailbird mama is selling the hillbilly heroin on the side, I'm sure the happy fam will be just fine, financially.
"glacierles - 12/30/2008, 8:36 a.m.
Please calm down. The names were meant in jest. [blah blah blah]"
i actually thought that originally. but was not certain. either way... i got to learn about random names in my research. learning (as stupid a learning it may be) is never a negative-gain. unless you abhor knowledge. (many people do.)
hopefully we can all agree on that. (and that the palins have completely stupid non-names.)
I don't know, x23, I think Tripp is pretty a appropriate name. Like, when you're walking and you trip, and it's an accident? Or how about all those trips that Bristol got to take on our tax dollar? See, it kinda makes sense. Even though it's more of a verb than a name.
