3 Democrats join Republican House Majority

Published Tuesday, December 16, 2008

JUNEAU, Alaska -- Three Democrats from rural Alaska have joined the Republican majority in the state House of Representatives.

Reggie Joule of Kotzebue, Bryce Edgmon of Dillingham and Bob Heron of Bethel switched allegiances.

State Rep. Mike Chenault of Nikiski says the three will broaden the views of the majority caucus.

Minority Leader Beth Kerttula of Juneau says she's disappointed with the departures.

The House majority now numbers 26 with the minority numbering 14.

Joule will have a seat on the powerful House Finance Committee, which reviews all legislation that spends money.

Edgmon was named co-chairman of a special energy committee and Herron was named co-chairman of the Health and Social Services Committee.

I think the increasing level of bipartisanship we are seeing in our legislature will be good for the state. For a few years there, we saw a group of quite exclusionary Republicans running the show. Then we saw the leaders of this crowd led away from Juneau in handcuffs. The Republicans left behind are proving to be a better breed. Nice to see folks working together down there these days. There's much to be done. We need more voices involved, not fewer. Good show, guys.

I have to agree that it is good for the State. It does not matter what party they serve, as long as they serve the people as they are elected to do.
