FAIRBANKS — The Hutchison Hawks swept a two-game Greatland Conference high school hockey series from the Tok Wolverines last weekend in Tok.
The Hawks rallied to pull out a 6-5 win in overtime Friday night and then came back to claim a 7-0 victory Saturday.
“Friday, we didn’t play that well defensively, but we played real well today,” Hutchison coach Dave Teets said Saturday evening when the Hawks returned to Fairbanks. “We talked about our defense a lot after Friday night’s game and came back really strong today.”
With goalie Shayna Thomas on the bench for an extra attacker, the Hawks tied Friday night’s game at 5-5 on a goal by Markus Daniels with 35 seconds left in regulation. Drew Baggen netted the game-winning goal at 3:58 of the 5-minute overtime period.
Baggen finished with three goals, while Daniels had two and Jordy Sunberg tallied one.
Tok’s Jesse Coulman had a four-goal night. Kyle Brinkman accounted for Tok’s other score.
Thomas stopped 26 shots to earn the win for Hutchison. Tok goalie Wade Johnson registered 64 saves on the night.
The Hawks dominated Saturday’s contest by outshooting the Wolverines 68-15.
Baggen led the offensive onslaught with two goals. Peter Langworthy, Wyatt Stutzke, Matt Daniels, Markus Daniels and Michael Walker each scored once.
Hayden Nilson recorded the shutout for Hutchison with 15 saves. Johnson had another strong performance between the pipes for the Wolverines with 61 saves.
Johnson had 129 saves on the weekend.
“That kid can really play,” Teets said. “He was solid all weekend long.”
Hutchison is scheduled to play Su-Valley at 3 p.m. Friday at the Big Dipper Ice Arena.
Monroe falls
The Monroe Catholic Rams couldn’t overcome Kenny Lake’s Rosencranz brothers in Greatland Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Kenny Lake.
Garrett Rosencranz and D. Rosencranz each recorded two goals and two assists in leading the Hawks to a 5-2 victory over the Rams. W. Jones registered Kenny Lake’s fifth goal.
Eric Ringstad had a goal and an assist for Monroe Catholic, while Patrick Otis added a goal, and Timmy Johnson registered an assist.
Monroe goalies Andy Bunten and Sydney Pace combined to stop 13 shots, while Kenny Lake goalie David Helkenn stopped 14 shots.
“We just can’t seem to get the bounces to go our way right now,” Monroe coach Leo Faro said. “It’s a little frustrating, but it’s something we’re going to have to work through.”
Monroe Catholic is scheduled to entertain Su-Valley at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the Polar Ice Center in North Pole.
