Palin files late disclosure for free trips

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Gov. Sarah Palin has added to her financial disclosure forms two free trips that she took nearly two years ago but failed to report.

Palin, who was Republican presidential candidate John McCain's running mate, made the disclosures last month, but after Election Day when she and McCain lost to Barack Obama and Joe Biden. The trips were first revealed in a story by The Associated Press in October.

The free trips were taken in April and May of 2007 and should have been reported within 30 days under state ethics law. The Nov. 17 disclosure forms note that the reports were "not filed timely due to administrative error."

Bill McAllister, the governor's spokesman, said this week that the mistakes were made by travel support staff. He said he could not explain the timing of when and how they were caught, but that it was irrelevant because the error was corrected.

Palin, who campaigned on an ethics reform platform and pushed a new legislation after taking office, is not facing any sanctions for the late filings, according to Linda Perez, state administrative director. Perez said she was alerted to the matter by McCain's presidential campaign before the Oct. 14 AP story.

"It wasn't necessarily the governor's oversight, nor was she trying to hide anything," Perez said. "It was a staff oversight."

In one of the trips, the James B. Hunt Jr. Institute of North Carolina - a nonprofit education policy group - paid the $2,827 cost of Palin's April 2007 flight and hotel in Scottsdale, Ariz., to attend a four-day conference, according to her report. The group has said it also paid for other governors attending the annual event in recent years.

In May 2007, Palin accepted lodging for herself and her three daughters at Mt. Chilkoot Lodge in the Southeast Alaska town of Skagway. The lodging, valued at $300, was paid for by the owners, including Palin friend and former deputy campaign treasurer Kathy Hosford.

The reports were among recent disclosures released to the AP after a public records request.

Among other gifts Palin reported last month is a June 30 flight valued at $1,187.50 that was paid by the North Slope Borough for Palin and her 7-year-old daughter, Piper, to attend various functions, including a whaling festival in the town of Barrow.

Palin and husband Todd also received travel, food and lodging valued at $4,620.12 to attend a Republican Governors Association event in Texas, in April - gifts that were not reported until August, according to disclosure forms. Palin and the other governors attending the event also received $1,000 Rocky Carroll cowboy boots.

Have you noticed with Sarah when these errors crop up, and they seem to be doing so with increasing frequency, it's always someone else's fault? She didn't go after the $150k for clothing; that was forced on her (though she is still wearing some of the outfits). The Troopergate situation wasn't her doing; it was a staffer's overeagerness. These disclosure forms were filed late but it wasn't her fault; it was a staff member to blame.
And even though she keeps violating these requirements there's never any penalty. "Aw, shucks....she didn't mean anything. We'll just let her off the hook" seems to be the thinking. For someone who is supposed to lead a government with billions of dollars at stake these continuing failures to meet requirements and then the subsequent failures of any sort of consequence sure doesn't smack of competence and ethics.
But, as we constantly see here and elsewhere, since it's Sarah Palin it's okay. Other people are held accountable for such violations but not Sarah. Why she's just so darned special and cute....

Alaskabooger: "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Exactly.

Palin has been "casting stones" about the reporting of gifts and trips and such since she took office. Now we find out that she's been doing the same. There's a fair bit of hypocrisy at work here. Isn't this essentially the same thing that Stevens did? Failing to report a gift? Palin demanded that Ted resign!

dobieman is correct. The Neo Con Republicans, including our Pitbull with Lipstick, King Pinocchio(Pathological Liar and Pathological Failure) and Shotgun Cheney(Shotgunned his buddy while intoxicated) has blamed others for every negative action they've been exposed as doing.
Even though our Liar in Chief and the rest of his Neo Con Administration including the Neo Con Think Tanks put us into Vietnam, I mean Iraq, on a everchanging basis of lies, deceit and manipulated intelligence, they've managed to escape blame, although the Neo Con Think Tanks are funded by the same Neo Con owned Oil and Energy Conglomerates who now have their mitts on the Iraqi Oilfields..
Putting the blame on others who are paid to take the fall shows where the Neo Con Parasites morals are. The reason Sarah is not held responsible is the same reason Big Daddy W. and his World Class Wrecking crew get a free pass every time they break the law or some trivial little ethical standard. Conservatism is a cult and the first rule of cultism is you do not turn on your own. There is always somebody else to blame. I'm curious about something. For months now, I've seen many negative comments directed at DNM for Sarah Palin articles seen as derogatory by her supporters. In fact, nearly every DNM article about the Gov. is seen as negative by her supporters. So for Jroosterdude and Ponderous, et al, (not meaning to leave anyone out here), where do you get your positive Palin facts from? *Are* there any positive facts about her, other than she looks attractive and has a very nice home and a cute husband and cute kids and got elected governor? Trust me, I've read a lot of positive articles about her (Alaska Magazine's staff apparently lives in her basement, for one example). Fox News lives and dies on showing her good side.). She's all about 'bringing people from both sides together', 'she's so down-to-earth', etc.

OTOH, during the recent unpleasantries in which your side pretty well lost, I watched many video clips of her campaigning. I read many transcripts of her interviews. I saw a whole nuther side of Sarah Palin.

To me, she is stupid, mean, but pretty. I love Alaska with all my heart. She made Alaska look stupid to the world. Already Alaska didn't have such a good rep (expensive, cold-- very very cold -- very very expensive). She made it far, far worse. I live and work amongst the very people she purported to represent in the last election -- the Joe Six-Packs, the 'soccer/hockey moms', etc. And they all said the same stuff about Alaska... 'stupid people must live up there'.

Why the hell do you support her? Please stop it already.

A couple of weeks ago, after the election was over and with Bush leaving office, I thought this hate would end. But the only thing that changed was you switching most of your hate to Palin.

If Bush had done anything illegal in the last 8 years, by now he would have been charged with it. But the only thing that has been ”proven” is trash talk. No charges, no indictments, nothing. With Reed and Polosi (sp?) in charge of the House and Senate, if there was something (anything), you know they would have used it!

You have two years until the next election. Nothing you say or do will change things so please stop with the hate and putdowns.

Until then you need to get outside and take a walk. Enjoy the trees and the mountains. Talk to people about something other then politics. In short, learn how to live without always spilling your hate on us!

If Governor Palin had hired competent staff instead of friends from high school or church, this embarrassing "late disclosure" would never have been necessary. But it took the AP to discover the record keeping errors committed by Palin's staff. Doesn't the state of Alaska have an accountant, a CPA, someone who is qualified to doublecheck the books and ensure that all of the right forms were filed, the correct amounts entered in the little boxes? How can a great state like alsaka keep putting up with the likes of palins activities.... she always blames someone else for her screw ups.... she ran a dirty campaign against her governor rival... but thats history... what is current is palin is dirty.... very dirty... and she is milking her diva status to the hilt.... most in the know in the RNC believe she could hamper the near future of the republican party. most americans believe she is rock star type famous but not respectable famous.... most rock stars are not someone you would want your daughter to go out with.... or son for that matter....

with all the dirt that keeps comming out on her i don't understand how the alaskan population can keep putting up with it.... she is no better than stevens.... and he was also a major dirty politician.... or corrupt may be a better description.... and palin is not far behind.... how far does she have to go before alaska has another stevens to prosecute.... i wish she would stay in alaska for a while and work on the alaskan economy.... instead of now saying it is washingtons fault alaska is hurting.... again she will find others to fault for her inability to govern.... i wish she would work on that gas pipeline (that she bragged sooooo much about in the campaign) and try to recover some of the 500 million she wasted so far..... alaskan citizens 500 million that she squandered by making a totally bad decision on who to give the contract to.... but then again it just may be a stevens type decision.... she proclaimed she was better and more experienced in making executive decisions than the president elect during the campaign.... i think now we see just what kind of incapable person she really is.....

finally her latest blunder and total insult was after president elect Obama met with the governors and she still procalimed him as 'Senator Obama'.... that is extremely disgusting comming from a so called 'executive politician'.... she shows no respect..... and someone that needs to stay away from the rest of the USA... she will fail in alaska.... or should i say alaska will wind up in very bad economic straites because of her..... i do hope you fine people up there see her for what she really is..... i major dirty politician with a pretty lipstick painted face.... you can put lipstick on a pig but it will always be a pig.... something alaskans need to realize....

I find it bizarre that people squeal like stuck hogs about Sarah's few thousand bucks when the lame duck leaders of our nation have stolen trillions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of lives in the last eight years. Comparatively speaking, this administration steals the equivalent of Sarah's ten thousand dollars every five seconds, (which is not going to end when Obama becomes president). http://www.nationalpriorities.org/costof...

    http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c1...
    http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c1...
Dennis Kucinich introduced Articles of Impeachment for Dick Cheney and then George Bush in the House in order to hold the criminals accountable, but Congress and the corporate media either minimized it or ignored it altogether. They weren't there when Nixon was impeached either. It took the American people to goad Congress into action against Nixon's criminal actions, which were minor compared to the present administration's infractions, like Sarah's five second blip on the "steal-o-meter" of the war, and now the bail-out. (That doesn't even count the loss of our civil rights.)

    http://www.prosecutionofbush.com/
According to Vincent Bugliosi, the man who prosecuted Charles Manson, there are grounds for prosecuting GW Bush for murder as well. This isn't some left-wing nut job here. He's a highly respected prosecutor who believes our president is guilty of murder and in his book, 'Prosecuting George W. Bush for Murder', has laid out the legal means for any DA in America to bring GW to justice.

Not holding our leaders accountable for their crimes, and dismissing their heinous actions as being "old news" and "in the past" as a reason not to prosecute them, is like opening the doors of all the prisons and saying, "Hey, let bygones be bygones," for all the other criminals. Nobody in any of our prisons is responsible for the theft of trillions nor the deaths of hundreds of thousands, so if we "let bygones be bygones" for the most heinous criminals in the nation, it would only be fair to let the lessor criminals off as well. (Just to be clear for the "tough on crime" folks - I'm just making a point here, I don't really believe all the criminals should be let out.)

    http://projects.publicintegrity.org/WarC...
The Bush administration lied over nine hundred documented times about the Iraq invasion/occupation which resulted in the near bankruptcy of our nation and the destruction of a nation that had nothing to do with the attack on America. They lied and thousands died. It's not just a catchy little left wing phrase. Hundreds of thousands of men, women, children, and babies have literally been slaughtered in their homeland as a result of the lies Bush and his administration told. I say We the People go after the big guys and move Sarah the Blip way down on the list of prosecutorial priorities.

    BigDan,

AGIA was a long time coming and credit is due there.

Or was it she fired Monegan for not firing her Sister's ex? As Monegan served at the Governers whim (and hence Palin did not have to have a reason for firing him).

3,4 - Now that oil is below $50 a barrel we will see how these stack and how "wasteful" the energy rebate becomes. Mind you, I am not complaining and used the cash.

Ethics reform. Don't make me laugh. #2 contradicts this to no end.

    1. AGIA = Tell us what she did here? I know she got it signed but is there any money coming into the state for this? I believe we paid a Canadian company 500 million to go through with it but do we have anything to show for this? Are we benefiting from it in any way?

    2. Fired Monegan for his lack of performance. = What exactly was he doing that lacked performance?

    3. Energy Rebate = I refused this check but could you tell me why this was a good idea? Isnt oil at $50.00 a barrel?

    4. Balanced the budget = I know we had a special session but I never saw a balance budget? Where does it say that we balanced the budget?

    5. Ethics reform = Please let all the haters know what our Govenor did to promote this?

Really isn't that hard to do if you look closely and not follow the blind hate mongerers.

when sarah got into office this state was run by big oil - with all the wealth we should have had the state had cut out ( entirely ) revenue sharing for the villages, reduced funding for denali kid care, shut down longevity bonus for elders, and was going after our dividends. now the state has control back, and sarah has brought back all of the programs to full funding levels. so unless you are just plain stupid or maybe work for the oil companies, to say sarah has done nothing for alaska shows how little you people know about our state so i doubt you even live here or maybe you are just here in college and waiting for mom and dad to buy your ticket back home to california. or maybe you have something against children, elders, or all the good alaskans in villages that depend on revenue division to fund basic public safety needs. whatever the case - you are not alaskans by any stretchy of the word -

The point is not the $300 or $3,000 trips. The point is the double standard at work here. Palin criticized Stevens and others for this EXACT SAME FAILURE!!! Yet, when it happens to herself, it's only a minor administrative clerical error. Nothing to worry about.

Why is that allowed? Why is she supposed to be protected from criticism of the same failure that she has criticized others for?

It is just politics as usual. It doesn't matter
which side of the aisle they come from, truth
is something that should be used only as a
last resort. All you have to do is look at what is
going on in DC. Stevens said, when asked where
the justification for the bailout was in the
Constitution, his reply was, general welfare.

You make intelligent sense to anyone who is realistic. Living in Alaska my almost 60 years now, I've seen the honest and genuinely caring politicians, both dems and reps, and Sarah Palin is NOT one of them. There's a pattern, with regard to dishonest, self-serving politicians, that is observable if people choose to open their eyes. I can see the pattern; it's glaringly obvious.

I hope you're right about all the promises Obama is going to "sweep under the rug". I'm still afraid of what all he said he was going to do and if he does any of them, I don't think it will be good for the United States (or Alaska) but if he reneges on any of his campaign pledges, that can only be a 'good thing'.

In this case, the more he fails to deliver on his promises the better it will be for the United States (and maybe the Liberals will be right - maybe he won't be as bad as I was afraid he'd be)...

Think about it, Santa is the Bill Allen of our house. It is unethical to receive a gift because of who you are or where you work. It's also unethical to accept rides from strangers so car pooling is out. Amazing that in two years, our Governor and family with a 80% approval rating was lavished with about $10,000 in travel and gifts that did not get reported. They needed the money to pay the entry fees for the Iron Dog. It was intentional and they did such a good job of covering it up, it took how many experts to audit the books and find the errors? I have an idea, lets hire an accountant to stay with each politician to assist them in determining what is reportable and what is not. That will only cost a couple hundred thousand dollars annually. Otherwise, we can deal with a few late reports and accounting errors. Makes me wonder how much they actually reported receiving. If it is 200k then they accurately reported 95% and in my book that's an A.

I don't think that it is reasonable to expect our Governor to file her own disclosure forms. She's way too busy building our gas pipeline, standing up to Big Oil, telling Congress thanks but no thanks, campaigning for race-baiting Georgia politicians, and prioritizing state health needs to be bothered with the details of disclosure forms. She needs competent staff to handle these kinds of things. Smart Important People (SIPs) who do not have essential skills themselves know they need to hire underlings who do have the skills. Governor Palin needs to hire subordinates who have the many skills that she lacks. Governor, with all due respect, might I suggest a public speaking coach and a bookkeeper?
