Galena boy recovering after being hit by grandmother’s car

FAIRBANKS — A 2-year-old Galena boy suffered a collapsed lung Saturday after his grandmother accidently hit him with her car in the family driveway, according to Galena police.
Galena Police Department Chief John Millan said the boy is recovering and is expected to be released from the hospital today. He said authorities believe the incident was accidental and did not involve alcohol. Millan said the department had no plans to file charges against the woman.
Millan declined to identify the child or the woman. He said the accident occurred slightly before noon Saturday in the family’s driveway on Antoski Road in Galena. The woman and her grandchild were leaving her house on their way to the store when the boy disappeared on the property, he said. She looked for him unsuccessfully before getting in her car to check the neighborhood, but after starting to pull out, Millan said, she felt and heard “a thud.”
The woman rushed the boy to the local clinic, after which Guardian Flight, an air ambulance contractor, flew him to Providence Hospital in Anchorage, where he arrived shortly after 2 p.m., Millan said.
Millan said despite the collapsed lung, the boy’s injuries were never life-threatening. He nonetheless praised local emergency responders’ decision to send the boy to a major hospital.
“It was just an honest mistake,” Millan said of the accident. “Because of the remoteness of the location here ... I think it was a smart move by the clinic to fly him to Providence.”

Our prayers are with you and your family.
Glad to know he's doing ok!
This is the reason I always walk around my vehicle or check my sled dogs before I drive. Thank God for giving the boy back to his family.
I am in town and havent heard whom this even is yet, but hope and pray this child is indeed OK. Sounds like John and the clinic did a great job. God bless this family.
Guardian Flight you guys are great. My blessings to the family. May you have a safe return trip home.
Kudos for the staff at the clinic in Galena. The signs and symptoms of a simple pneumothorax can be very subtle, but it sounds like the health care providers had a high index of suspicion and a willingness to follow up on it. Well done!
