Palin unqualified to serve as vice president

Sarah Palin’s chief qualification for being elected governor of Alaska was that she was not Frank Murkowski.
He was at a low point when he took out ads saying “Maybe I should consider a personality transplant,” but his presence in the 2006 GOP primary helped her capture the nomination and go on to beat Tony Knowles.
She did not win because of her conservative credentials, her grasp of policy details or because of her track record as the mayor of Wasilla, an office she won in 1996 by collecting 617 votes.
National GOP spokesmen—including the VP also-rans—went on and on Friday about how Palin is to “the right” of John McCain, that she is an “economic conservative” and that she will attract supporters of Hillary Clinton to the Republican party.
She is an engaging and charming politician and I have nothing negative to say about her character, her tenacity or her service to our state.
I don't even have major concerns about her performance as governor. She is smart and excels in dealing with people one-on-one.
I like what she did on oil taxes and think her gas line plan may work in the long run, though that won’t be clear for years.
This is one of the most stunning news events in the history of Alaska.
However, in no way does her year-and-a-half as governor of Alaska qualify her to be vice president or president of the United States.
One of the strange things Friday was that so many commentators and politicians did not know how to pronounce her name and had no clue about what she has actually done in Alaska.
Some claimed that she has gotten a gas pipeline going after three decades of inaction, which is far from the truth, while others said she is the most popular governor in the nation, so she must be doing something right.
What the national pundits didn’t say was that Palin has served as governor of Alaska during a time of unprecedented oil wealth, which has helped preserve her popularity.
She has not had to make difficult budget and tax decisions of the sort that cost Murkowski at the polls.
Perhaps the strangest claim repeated endlessly on the news channels is that she has proven she can cut taxes and reduce the size of government in Alaska. She may have cut taxes as mayor of Wasilla, but that's not the same as cutting taxes as governor of Alaska, where there is no state income tax or sales tax to cut.
When he was governor, faced with a growing gap between oil income and expenses, Murkowski proposed a series of budget cuts and tax increases that—along with the selection of his daughter Lisa to replace him in the Senate—made him the most unpopular governor in Alaska history.
By contrast, record oil prices since her election have helped Palin avoid anything as sensitive as cutting off the Longevity Bonus or proposing a tire tax or wildlife viewing tax.
The comments from GOP politicians about how she championed budget cuts, reduced spending and “stood up” to Sen. Ted Stevens on the “bridge to nowhere” are a distortion. The Alaska budget is growing, not shrinking. To claim that the $1,200 payouts due to Alaskans in September have anything to do with restraining government growth, as McCain supporters are doing, is false.
It's true that she deserves credit for collecting much of the excess cash rolling into the state treasury. She championed a multi-billion-dollar oil tax increase, against great opposition from the oil industry and leading power brokers in the GOP, at a time when oil prices were rising and the previous tax law had become suspect.
The old law was at the center of the political corruption scandal that continues to ensnare politicians other than Palin.
The tax increase proposed by the governor and approved by the Legislature has temporarily taken all pressure off the state government to reduce spending.
With her selection by McCain, Palin will be subjected to intense scrutiny by the national news media for the first time. It will be unlike anything she has seen in Alaska.
I may be proven wrong, but the decision announced by McCain strikes me as reckless. She is not prepared to be the next president should something happen to McCain.
The main charge against Democrat Barack Obama is that he dose not have the track record to be president. The choice of Palin effectively removes that from the GOP arsenal.
Palin said Friday, in an exchange carried on CNN, that her 13 years as a member of the Wasilla City Council from 1992-96, mayor of Wasilla from 1996-2002 and governor for a year-and-a-half add up to “good experience” for the vice presidency.
McCain and Palin will have to prove that to the American people before November.
HALCRO: Blogger Andrew Halcro, the former state representative and 2006 candidate for governor, said: "McCain has put one of the least qualified politicians in the country a heartbeat away from the presidency."
"With Republicans on the verge of spending the next 40 years wandering in the desert because of their inability to manage government, McCain's choice highlights that he just doesn't get it," Halcro said.
BEGICH: U.S. Senate candidate Mark Begich responded to the Palin news this way with a prepared statement: “This is a proud day for the people of Alaska. Congratulations to Governor Palin for making history for women, our state and our country.”
OBAMA: Democratic Presidential Nominee Sen. Barack Obama and running mate Sen. Joe Biden released the following statement:
"We send our congratulations to Governor Sarah Palin and her family on her designation as the republican nominee for Vice President. It is yet another encouraging sign that old barriers are falling in our politics. While we obviously have differences over how best to lead this country forward Governor Palin is an admirable person and will add a compelling new voice to this campaign."
RESPONSES: The Web site thehill.com said "Democrats jumped at the opportunity to frame Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) as inexperienced and unqualified minutes after John McCain announced the Alaska Republican will be his running mate."
The Web site quoted Obama spokesman Bill Burton as saying: "Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency," Barack Obama spokesman Bill Burton said.
"Governor Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush's failed economic policies — that's not the change we need, it's just more of the same," he said.
The Web site said Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) also issued a statement attacking Palin's inexperience, calling the pick "troubling."
"Certainly the choice of Palin puts to rest any argument about inexperience on the Democratic team and while Palin is a fine person, her lack of experience makes the thought of her assuming the presidency troubling," Schumer said.
Schumer added, "I particularly look forward to the Biden-Palin debate in Missouri."
YOUNG: Rep. Don Young said: "Congratulations to Governor Palin. This is an historic event for Alaska and the nation, and I will actively support the McCain-Palin ticket to be elected our next President and Vice-President.
STEVENS: Sen. Ted Stevens said: "It’s a great day for the nation and Alaskans. Governor Palin has proven herself as a bright, energetic leader for our State and will bring the same energy to the Vice Presidency. She will serve our country with distinction – the first Alaskan and first woman on the Republican ticket. I share in the pride of all Alaskans."
MURKOWSKI: Sen. Lisa Murkowski said:
“John McCain has taken a bold step today in choosing Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate. Gov. Palin has risen to every challenge she’s faced, and her choice is historic for Alaska and for the women of America. Sarah brings a great deal of excitement to the campaign and she makes Alaskans proud."
OUTSIDE COMMENT: Boston Globe columnist Joan Vennochi writes:
"McCain is treating women voters as if all they care about is gender. Views and experience don't matter. Elected in 2006, Palin is governor of a state with a population that is one-tenth the size of Massachusetts. Her prior political service was as mayor of a town of 5,700 people.
"What about Alaska is at all similar to the rest of the country? The Iditarod is fun, but it's not the answer to the country's infrastructure problems.
"McCain may believe the pick shores up his own credentials, demonstrating that he doesn't need a Joe Biden to buff up his resume.
"But given his age, voters need a special comfort level with McCain's running mate. If McCain wins, the next vice president would be a heartbeat away from a man in his seventies."
FACE TO FACE:A report on CNN suggests that McCain and Palin met in person for the first time at a conference in February and that the governor traveled to Flagstaff this week and met McCain a second time. The network said he told her that she was his choice for the ticket Thursday.
PALIN BOOK: This from the Associated Press.
NEW YORK (AP) _ John McCain's surprise choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (PAY'-lin) as his running mate has given a biography of her the kind of boost that her Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden's memoir received when he joined the ticket.
The book titled "Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned Alaska's Political Establishment Upside Down," has jumped into the top 200 on Amazon.com, where shoppers now have to wait one to three weeks for shipment.
The book written by author Kaylene Johnson was released in April, and had sold out a small first printing of around 7,000 copies.
Publisher Kent Sturgis says a paperback version will be hurried out, with an expected printing of 50,000.
Sturgis tells The Associated Press that he was "happy as a clam even before today," but this is "unbelievable
OBAMA CALL:A Fox News reporter offers this account of Obama offering congratulations to Palin.
"At 4:50 p.m. EDT Obama called to congratulate Palin from his campaign bus. According to senior adviser Robert Gibbs, Obama told Palin she would be 'a terrific candidate and that he looked forward to seeing her on the campaign trail.' Gibbs also said Obama wished Palin 'good luck, but not too much luck.'"
ARNOLD: California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said, in an interview on KCRA-TV: "She has the strength to go and push back. She had the strength up there to fix the budget problem that they had, to reform the system and also to push back really hard on the bridge to nowhere. I think that she's cleaning up the mess up there and I think she has tremendous courage."

Dermot,
Who is qualified? A professional politician. When Stevens went to office he was an ambulance chaser and had never held a public position before. The same can be said for Young, a teacher in Fort Yukon. Let's look at Ernst Gruening, a doctor from New York City and probably the most effective politician this state ever saw. By the way he was sent here more or less as a punishment by the Roosevelt administration. Ask your brother Terry at UAF. I am just sitting here squirming until you enlighten me on who is qualified.
She will do just fine.
Washington needs a good shot of common sense and integrity.
Dermot Cole - You have certainly shown your true colors in slamming Governor Sarah Palin's nomination for Vice President of the United States of America! You have not held her hand, looked directly into her eyes, and talked to her on a personal, one on one basis.....I have! I am proud to say I supported her from day one in her candidancy for Governor of this great state. She has taken on the "good old boys network", the "big oil" consortium, and others. Her leadership and intelligence has faced down our corruption problems head on and shown she is truly there for us. I am happy and proud we can share her great attributes with the rest of the nation, though I am saddened we are losing her, one of the best Governors' Alaska has ever seen. May God Bless Governor Sarah Palin and God Bless the U.S.A.
I see that you don't like our Governor, eh Cole? Who would you have suggested? Oh, wait ... you don't like McCain either, so you don't really care, do you? As the other readers have written, she will do far better than your "expectations." And I bet there will be more who will agree with me.
Cole is super liberal, what did you expect? I am sure he is much more comfortable with a inexperienced rookie senator as president than a first term governor as VP, though of course a governor actually does lead government.
Ladd McBride: "You have not held her hand, looked directly into her eyes, and talked to her on a personal, one on one basis."
Is this really necessary to judge a person's credentials for the nation's second-highest office? Hand-holding?
Mr. McBride, most of us -- not just Mr. Cole -- have not had the intimacy with our political candidates you seem to have had. We have only the facts of her life and her experience to go on. Why do you find that insufficient?
The question that needs to be asked of Sarah:
John McCain took numerous trips (on a private jet to the Keating spread in the Bahamas) paid for by Chuck Keating. McCain did not disclose those gifts until he got caught in the Keating Five scandal- a scandal that cost US taxpayers billions.
Ted Stevens has been indicted on seven charges of doing the EXACT same thing that John McCain did- taking gifts and not disclosing them. So Gov. Palin, please explain how you are taking a position against corruption within the Republican party and the "Good Ole Boys Club"? Isn't John McCain- by his past actions- demonstrably part of the corruption problem?
A question that needs to be asked of Andy Halcro: Andy, aren't you just a sore loser? Got beat by a girl and it just kills you, right?
Sarah did give the best speech she has ever made this morning. She hit all the right points- a women, five kids, a union member husband. And of course, the son who is heading off to Iraq in the US Army.
But one thing is for sure. The national media will be on this like nothing we've ever seen before. It will not be a perfectly smooth ride for Sarah.
But then look at Obama's pick for VP- Biden, a proven plagiarist. Shouldn't that disqualify him? Hardly a word said in the media about that fiasco.
One common theme seems to come up when bashing Palin on her experience, or lack thereof, is that people don't believe she would make a good commander-in-chief. Those that tout this argument seem to be counting on McCain dying. Do they know something others don't? Are they planning an assassination?
All that aside and looking strictly at the argument of "inexperience", if it was a bad choice to use Palin as a "second fiddle" to the White House, how smart was it to put an inexperienced person up as "first fiddle"?
Obama has some experience in the Senate, working as part of a group. Palin has experience as Mayor and Governor, working as the executive commander. Since the argument is that neither person has adequate international or security experience, that topic is a wash. However, looking at leadership roles, Palin's experience exceeds that of Obama. Now what you are left with is evaluating whether you are willing to put someone with "no experience" directly into the President's seat or "possibly" into the President's seat.
Hmm....... Palin not qualified? Have you compared her political career to Obama? Maybe someone should do their homework... This morning I am very proud to call myself Alaskan and a Republican, I have always been proud of my country, this morning I got to see two true red, white and blue's stand up for what America will be! God Bless America!
can't believe you actually believe what Halcro says.
Mr. Cole thinks he gets to decide who is or is not qualified. Thank goodness we all get a vote on it.
Hardcore democrats seemed to have already attacked Palin and "shot their wad." Is that all there is; "lack of experience" and "a heartbeat away", as if Sen McCain is likely to not survive his term? Is that all there is to say against Sarah, that she is "small town, no time in service?"
You can bet Sen. McCain heavily vetted his short list...why do you think she was the choice?
Alaskans respect and care about Sarah and her family, because she cares and respects ours. Now, it is America's turn to get to know her.
glad we don't have to listen to Rockstar. She will do a fine job and no holds barred attitude will rock the nation. I for one think people out there should listen to alaskans and am damn proud to have one there. If you are afraid then do you have something to hide? if they listen to one Alaskan as Gov. Then let them listen to one as V.P. .. Right on and you go girl ,shake @&$t up. Peace!
Mr Cole, check your facts and innuendos. The Governor did not inherit a surplus to "ride a wave of excess cash". She was very instrumental in the increase to the State revenue through the ACES petroleum tax plan. Murkowski's PPT plan was not nearly as agressive on behalf of Alaska. Senator McCain's selection of our Governor has many implications on the National and State level. It is a great example of a very good executive decision by the Republican candidate. I can't say the same for the Democratic Nominee's choice of running mates.
I have argued the same point when Gov. Palin's name first came up as a possible VP candidate. You are right, she is probably not as qualified as the VP should be. But given that she is more qualified than the other party's presidential nominee, it's a moot point in this election.
Sarah has the exactly the same amount of experience as VP as Obama has as President.

Sure good to see Mr. Cole sticking up for the good old boy network and tax and spend liberals that are on the verge of corrupting this country. Thank you for reiterating what most of us already knew about you Mr. Cole, you are for furthering the Socialist Agendas of the Democratic Party.
I have to agree with Murphy - what does it take to get experience? Maybe holding an office that puts you there? Would not being the Vice President under the tutelage of a senior statesman help to educate GOV (soon to be VP)Palin? Wouldn't the expertise of those that are trained in the State Dept help to educate GOV (soon to be VP) Palin?
There is a lot of rhetoric about not having experience and not knowing what is going on. Maybe its time to shake things up and bring in new and fresh ideas. Maybe its time we had someone who actually made changes.
Gov Palin isn't one of those lackys that holds millions of dollars from their fathers and ancestors. She comes from small town America. She has fought, clawed and won.
If her methods and policies were so bad, then why does she have an 80% approval rating?
It seems to me that there is a lot of jealousy going on by those who don't understand her.
I can be happy to remind my kids that they met such an outstanding, down to earth, hard working lady.
She is the type of role model that our kids can look up to. From being a "soccer, hockey mom" to Vice President of the United States of America - Now that is an American Dream
Let's not kid ourselves. McCain chose Palin because he is trying to get the votes of people who are upset that Clinton did not get the Democratic nomination. The hope--and clear insult--is that those voters who wanted to elect Clinton will be as happy to elect Palin, despite the fact that they are political opposites.
I think it is unfair to talk about McCain as though he is on his deathbed. He is old, yes, and there are risks, but the man is apparently healthy. However, we should still take a long, hard look at whether or not Palin is qualified for the second-in-command position in our nation. Let's not kid ourselves: we're not a major state, politically speaking. Palin has been the mayor of a small town and the governor of a minor state. Is that really the level of experience we want at the executive level of gov't (and, yes, I do think Obama is pushing it, but I think his credentials *are* stronger and his veep is a better pick overall)? Think hard. Think past Alaska: is this really the best person for the Vice Presidency? I don't think so.
I still don't agree with McCain's policies. I certainly don't agree with Palin's. If nothing else, well, this is now going to be an ever more interesting year.
Rockstar: Your derogatory comments are out of place. As is your assertion, "Are you really ready for Palin to be president?", you see, Sarah is the pretty one standing to the "old guy's" left (the right side of your t.v. screen). She is running for "Vice President" which is the position just under President, the old guy there is running for President.
It can be confusing, but don't worry, you'll get it.

Pres. Bush's congrats about Gov. Palin on White House site
The White House is energized and excited by this choice. President Bush called Governor Palin just before his meeting with President Kikwete of Tanzania. He said that the McCain-Palin ticket is very strong. He wished her good luck, told her that she will be a fantastic vice presidential candidate, and that he is looking forward to a great victory in November.

Today Congress is going to leave Washington for another recess without taking any action to make our country more energy independent, in addition to refusing to allow a vote on energy legislation. It looks like they will also leave town without allowing votes on nominations for positions throughout the federal government regarding energy.
For example, although the Senate just spent two weeks debating a bill regarding the Commodities Future Trading Commission, one Senate Democrat has put a hold on three nominations to the Commission. Additionally, another Senate Democrat has a hold on our nominee to serve as the Deputy Secretary of Energy. And by holding up these nominations, Senate Democrats are putting more road blocks in the path of our ability to determine America's path to addressing our comprehensive energy needs.
These positions should be filled, and we would urge them to allow for there to be an up or down vote. And if the vote succeeds, great. And if they don't, then we will go back to the drawing board. But simply not voting should not be an option.

Reading the national blogs, one thing keeps coming up again and again...
There are lots of people across this country who will be very surprised by our Governor. And Democrats are doing themselves no good at setting the expectations bar so low.
Do I think she is the best candidate for VP in the Republican Party? No. But not for the reasons being talked about (her inexperience in political office). I seriously question her understanding of law, and the currently-investigated affair with her brother-in-law demonstrates a side of her that was careful kept from Alaska media during the gubernatorial election, a temper and vindictiveness that underscores the nickname "Barracuda".
But to suggest that our governor won't be able to debate and fight with "the big boys" in DC shows that the people saying that don't know her at all. She's stood up to - and beaten - Alaskan Republicans that had the rest of the national Republican party licking their boots - and made them like it.
McCain picked a woman, yes - but that isn't why he picked our Governor. He picked someone who unifies the Reagan coalition of social and fiscal conservatives, which was falling apart. He insulated himself from the "elitist" charge. He chose a person whose spouse is part-minority, a union member, and a small business owner.
McCain has gambled away the "experience" card in his deck. He may have picked up a Queen. With the expectation bar being set so low, Sarah Palin will easily jump way over it - which will cause people in the rest of the country, esp. women who claim to be "outraged" that McCain was being "insulting" by just picking any woman, to take a second look at her.
Sarah Palin is not Hillary Clinton. But she sure as heck is not Dan Quayle. To compare her is him risks having many, including ex-Hillary supporters, to judge her favorably and miss that her positions may not be in line with theirs.
If Palin is unqualified than so is Obama.
She has the best qualifications: she is an American.
She has integrity and stands behind her values and principles.
She has always been proud to an American.
What makes a lawyer with one term as Senator qualified to be President (chief executive and commander-in-chief)?
Palin is an Alaskan for Alaskans and now she can be an American for Americans. Is that not the root of our government "We the people" not you the citizens and us the politicians. I stand by our Alaskan Governor!
Snowbug, I agree with your statements 100%!!!!
Dermot, your article is nothing but sour grapes.
I see nothing in the US Constitution that would make Governor Palin not qualified to hold the Office of Vice President of the United States. Did I miss something?
I'm quite positive Obama is also an America, as is McCain and Biden. I think she needs to finish what she started here in Alaska, she really has yet to PROVE she can make tough decisions. Yes, she has tenacity. I think there were many more people much better qualified McCain could, and should have picked. Remember, Alaska is a SMALL state when it comes to our population and the majority of whom are in Anchorage. She hasn't done much for the Interior.
The VP has only two things to do according to the Constitution: A) Serve as President of the Senate, and break ties B) Wait for Pres to die, or be incapacitated.
It's unfortunate she was chosen NOT for her skills, but for her gender and age. It's known she and McCain barely know each other, and could very well not work well together. Her ideas could, and probably WILL be sidelined.
If anything, the GOP knows they probably won't get it this time around. But instead are preparing her, and themselves for a future election with her as the Presidential Candidate.
500,000 Alaskans vs. 300 Million Americans. We have less people than most cities in the US. Even small midwestern towns are bigger than Wasilla. Most states have SERIOUS economic problems, and not flush with cash like Alaska. And yeah, while we are protected up here.. the folks, where the majority of the electoral votes are NOT.
I'd like to see Ms. Palin finish cleaning up Alaska. She has ALOT more to do.
Congrats to Gov Palin! I for one absolutely love the idea and was hoping for it for quite some time. I trust Gov Palin much more than anyone else out there. She uses common sense and gets the job done. Her leadership has benefitted Alaska and I firmly believe she will be a great assett to the rest of the U.S.
Too funny.
Everything you people love about Palin, you hate about Obama.
It's beyond lame.
Have a great day!
Mr. Cole says he has no problem with Gov. Palin's character, and says she is smart, but believes her lack of experience makes her a poor choice as a vice-presidential running mate. So back up - if a person is smart, and has good character, will they not make reasonable and good choices? Well, our good governor did make a choice today - and that choice was to become the next Vice-President of our nation.
Regarding the experience question, what exactly do you need to be Vice-President? Does Mr. Cole know? He didn't list the qualifications. I don't know that there is a list. But this I know, many, much more qualified than Mr. Cole, have decided she does have the ability to be a great Vice-President.
For me, I've been very happy with her choices and progress in Alaska, and believe that will carry on to a National level. I would just hope Washington doesn't 'educate' her too much on how things are 'supposed' to be done. I would hope that her character would stand up to that great test. Indeed, I believe strength of character to be probably the greatest need for such a national post.
And what is her character? We know her dislike for pork spending. We know her commitment to us. We see her seek to follow her heart and rational thought regardless of party or special interests. We've seen her fight corruption in and out of government. In her mind everyone and everything is fair game if it violates common sense and the common good. Isn't this what is needed in Washington?
It was wonderful to see Sen. McCain present her this morning in Dayton, Ohio. I sat with my 8th grader watching it unfold. To see character valued in this great woman and family warmed my heart and hopefully my son's also. They represent what is best in America, and I hope they can stay Alaskan and reveal their character to our nation for at least the next four years.
saraha as vice prez NOW THATS FUNNY.....
now you now why she said vote no on 4
Let's see, how to you pronounce that? Wah!
She has more executive experience than Obama & Biden put together.
She holds her ground.
She's not a socialist like Obama.
She's not a "good-old-boy" like Biden.
A woman with a brain that can manage a family & career? Aren't only liberals allowed to stereotype like that?
But she's a CONSERVATIVE! Gasp! Like most Alaskans and most Americans. Imagine that.
I know Obama is for change. Palin changed a lot of things that no other governor was able to change.
Obama hasn’t said how he’s going to change America, but he has shown us. “Senate bill S 2433”. I don’t want the changes Obama has planned for us. I don’t want to be a European. Oops. Sorry that wasn’t right. The Europeans don’t give .7% of their gnp to the UN. (But they do give up their guns & sovereignty.)
Governor Palin has said that creationism should be taught along side evolution to our kids. That kind of factual ignorance should be nowhere near the White House.
My hats off to her. However; its not the right time, and they are just using her as "eye-candy." I myself would love to see her finish her term out first as our governor also.
I disagree, Dermot. Just look at where "experienced politicians" have gotten us today: record debts, deficits, trade imbalances, energy crisis, inflation, unconstitutional wars, a broken financial system, and a damaged currency.
On both Sarah Palin and Barak Obama's behalf, I can only say that "experienced politicians" are severely overrated.
Ladd McBride writes: "You have not held her hand, looked directly into her eyes, and talked to her on a personal, one on one basis." He seems to be offering this as a reason to support someone.
Hm, I seem to recall George W. looking into the eyes and soul of Vladamir Putin and liking what he saw. Perhaps this is not an accident. They both went on to invade other countries. (Sorry, couldn't resist pointing that out.)
Anyway, four of our last five presidents came came from various governors' mansions. One (Ronald Reagan) was a tremendous success, another (Bill Clinton) was successful in some areas and failed in others, and two (Jimmy Carter and George W. Bush) were catastrophic failures. None were fully prepared when they assumed office.
I'm not as skeptical about this as Dermot Cole, but I'm not swooning either. We'll see how she does on the national stage. I don't envy her for what she's about to be hit with. But she's proven time and again how tough she is.
Two things we can all agree on: this will be the most interesting election in decades, and Sarah Palin is nowhere near as creepy as Dick Cheney.
Mr. Cole, would you say George Washington lacked the experience to be the first President. Seems all the founding fathers really didn't have experience in this form of government, but did a pretty darn good job.
Senator McCain's only executive experience was as commander of a naval aviation squadron; Senators Obama and Biden have no executive experience. Governor Palin has been a mayor, a business owner, a state governor and has managed a household - more executive experience than the other three combined.
Senator Obama still has no international experience and he, not Joe Biden, is running for president. A president with no international experience is much more worrisome than a vice-president with that lack. And Governor Palin has probably spent more time in the Middle East, seeing the troops in harm's way, than has Obama.
My preference for vice president was Mitt Romney, followed by a Romney-Palin ticket in 2012 if McCain is unable to continue. But starting now as vice president will provide Gov. Palin an opportunity to learn before taking the top job.
The last two president's did not have any international experience as governors of Arkansas and Texas, which is probably why the nominees for both parties this year came out of the senate instead of a state house. If international experience is so critical, what happened to Bill Richardson?
Wally Hickel, as Interior Secretary, is the last Alaskan to have a national political presence in the executive branch.
Sarah Palin is an excellent representative for Alaska on that stage.
Is this the same Sarah Palin that was too inexperienced to win the Republican Primary? Then the general election? The same one that has brought back trust in our government, despite $4.30+ per gallon gas prices?
I want it noted for the record that I have never been against Obama due to 'lack of experience'. Maybe we should have Ted Stevens and Don Young as our president and VP, they have LOTS of experience. I just disagree with some of his policy ideas.
This will be a fun election to watch, that is for sure.
Palin for President 2012!
I will enjoy this election. McCain seems to think he can buy the Clinton women by this choice. I was on the phone to a political group office back on the East Coast, and already strong women politicians like Boxer who champion the women issues important to that group (choice, middle-class relief, Iraq) are pointing out that Palin is to the Right of McCain in almost all issues. McCain believes he can just snag their votes, that they will vote for any woman just to get a female in the White House. Another miscalculation from a person who sees his campaign running out of steam.
I wonder if the Mayor will support Sarah?
Dermot, to run for President of the United States of America requires that you are a natural-born citizen of this country, and are a minimum of 35 years old, and have lived in the US for a minimum of 14 years.
This is in Article II, Clause 5 of the Constitution.
The Framers thereof were farmers, merchants, etc.
Geo Washington hadn't any experience either.
Vat a country!!!
Amen, Mr. Cole. I don't always agree with you, but it's nice to see an Alaskan actually printing something remotely truthful. Even if it has caused people to slam you. But hey, there are worse things in life than being called "super liberal." I would wear that as a badge of honor.
I wouldn't.

Demont: you mis-called this & have no idea what your neighbors think! remember the bumped sticker" ALASKA GIRLS KICK ASS"
I seem to recall our 16th President only having served a term in Congress (as a Representative and not a Senator, no less) and being considered one of the most capable leaders in History. Abraham Lincoln had minimal political experience and NO executive experience before becoming President of the U.S.
While Gov. Palin may not have the shrewdness of Pres. Lincoln, she certainly has the sound judgment, resolve, compassion and stamina that Americans desire in and demand from their leaders.
I have no concerns about her having to take the reigns if a President McCain becomes incapacitated.
Dermot,
She is much more qualified to be vice president than you are to analyze her selection. Being a governor of Alaska with it's transportation and energy issues, no matter how long, makes her more qualified for her potential position than reporting and editting for a bad daily that kisses big oil backside qualifies you for analyzing national politics. Stick to reporting on Kiwanis club events.
I think Dermot should stick to passing along thank-you's from grateful tourists and announcing bake sales.
If you think about it, what experience does Obama have? He's been running for president since he was elected to the senate. So is Dermot saying that a state legislator from Illinois is more qualified than a state goveror? So in essence, Dermot is saying that Alaskan's are too green and dumb to run for "real" political office. I fully expected that attitude from East Coast elitists, but not from one of our own.
Super Liberal makes me want to spew. Sarah will do just fine as she is true Alaskan unlike most of our liberal transplants on this blog. You folks realy should grab the next flight to Kalifornia.
Pat
Come on people, do you honestly believe Dermot Cole is a conservative Republican. I am sure the Cole brothers have made it very clear as to their political leanings over the years. Remember that experience does not equal ability. Who better than Alaskans have witness what has happened to the most experienced Republican Senator in the Senate. There are times that it is ability that is needed, not experience. Now will be the time to see if Palin has the ability to take on a national campaign.
Governor Palin has, as has been mentioned, more executive experience than Obama and Biden combined. She lacks in foreign policy experience, but is a quick study, apprenticed to a master.
As an enthusiastic student of history, I find myself brought back to the story of Harry S Truman. Truman was inexperienced in global matters when he was nominated as VP, except as a doughboy, and was a Missouri local yokel. FDR didn't even take the time to bring HST along. HST didn't even have knowledge of the Manhattan Project, and the atomic bomb, until he was actually the POTUS. American history has judged Truman favorably, as a strong and decisive commander, willing to make the tough decisions in order to save American lives.
Another famous American was thrust from a log cabin birth, through a failed business career, minor political experience to the ultimate national crisis, then the pantheon of American history. Man by the name of Lincoln.
I'm not suggesting that Governor Palin is capable of reaching a revered place in American history, but it is our history that sometimes common Americans, like Sarah Palin, are thrust into history, and rise to the occasion.
Although I admit my bias toward the Republicans, actually Senator Obama and Senator Biden also have that opportunity. History is funny, that way.
Hey Dermot, is there any reason that you and the rest of the Editorial Staff of the News-Whiner have not joined the staff of the Skanckorage Daily News?
"What about Alaska is at all similar to the rest of the country? The Iditarod is fun, but it's not the answer to the country's infrastructure problems."
Wow... Are we not US citizens as well?
"Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency," Barack Obama spokesman Bill Burton said."
Maybe Washington needs what we've go here in AK, found in 'a town of 9,000' and other communities.
Wow, amazing. Everyone wants to support Gov. Palin, but what has she actually DONE for the state? Oh, yeah 1200 checks.
Is the Gas Pipeline even started yet?
Has she lowered Fuel and Heating costs?
What about the rise in food costs?
Reinstating programs that Murkowski cut as he was pandering to Big Oil?
Other than the 1200 dollar payoff, all she's done is had the guy fired who refused to fire her ex-brother in-law. Oh, and tell Sen. Stevens no thanks to for some projects.
Her experience as a Mayor! come on, it's a town of 9000 people, with only 15% voting. Remember, we're talking about the entire United States. a Town of 9000 down there is nothing.. it's a place you stop to use the bathroom and grab some food. Believe me, I grew up in one of those towns. Small Town Politics isn't about what you DO, it's who you know. Wait, that's Alaskan Politics as well. Most of what we call politicians up here in Alaskan wouldn't survive outside.
Funny how everyone calls her a beauty queen... She was Miss Wasilla, all 5 girls in town competing? Then, Miss Alaska runner up! Making All-State High School Band was a bigger deal if you're in a state like Pennsylvania, Illinois, or Kansas!
As I said before, McCain is just using her for her looks.. trying to win votes. She'll be a more "traditional" VP, the type like Truman... definitely not in the Loop on anything.
So. Draconian. Is the Democrat party "just using" Obama for his "looks" trying to win votes?
Sounds silly on either foot, if you ask me.
I hope that neither party is that shallow, or honestly thinks that America is that easily lead. I also hope that most Americans vote for reasons other than gender or ancestry.
draconianslacker, and you were the one writing on the outhouse walls and still writing the same as cole.
You go girl!
Dermot Cole's line of reasoning why Gov. Palin is not qualified to be either Vice-President or President (as a state Governor) is interesting. To be consistent in his reasoning, Mr. Cole would have to claim that another state Governor was not qualified to be President. I'll mention but two state Governors who ran for President, one was not elected and the other one did get elected. They are Gov. Thomas Dewey and Governor Woodrow Wilson. All of Mr. Cole's reasoning when applied makes it obvious that by Mr. Cole's logic, neither Dewey nor Wilson was qualified to be President. I doubt that Mr. Cole would agree that Woodrow Wilson was not qualified--after all, Woodrow Wilson was a DEMOCRAT! In point of fact, Mr. Cole's article was no so much a commentary, as it was a tantrum by a pathological Liberal.
Dermot, again thank you for laying out the facts!! It is interesting to see how people seemed to blow by your statements of respect and value for Palin and have just focused in on the brutal truth in your writings.
For starters, Obama finished magna cum laude at Harvard Law after finishing a poli si degree from Columbia and Sarah finished a BA in journalism on a beauty pageant scholarship. The same pageant she was awarded Miss Congeniality... so no wonder Lady McBride likes her... who doesn’t? She is Miss Congeniality... Do readers realize how difficult it is to finish magna cum laude at Harvard Law!!
This entire nomination is like a nurse working for a cardiology unit at the hospital for example... who has been assisting the cardiologist for a decade... wanting to become to start to perform his job duties. Sure the nurse has tons of hands on experience, understands the anatomy of the heart, has seen the cardiologist perform his/ her procedures thousands of times... but would you really feel safe letting a nurse perform a triple bypass on you? I want our leaders, to have a strong educational backbone to reinforce their political careers and I do not think a BA in journalism and some work with politics qualifies you for the vice presidency. Shoot if that was the case McCain should have chosen Katie Couric for the ticket!
Palin is doing a great job for the state of Alaska. This is her realm, her door step, her life, her people, our policies... our problems, our concerns... this is her element! I am very proud of her, but I feel she has bitten off a bit more than she will be able to chew with this nomination... and I wish her luck. I for one would never have the audacity to jump into a doctor’s shoes without formal education... even with years of hands on experience and I would be unjustly serving and treating my patients if I did. It is very important for each of us; to know our limits... hopefully Sarah knows hers!
(This comment was removed by the Newsminer.com staff. Please see our User Agreement for further information.)
AKLOWN, that's refreshing! Thanks for sharing such an insightful thought!
Cole,
You are an old sourdough with no compassion for fresh ideas! Remember your words when she wins the nomination this coming November!
Canadian-Alaskan
Well, I have to say I have enjoyed reading your articles all these years and am (was) reading your book "Fairbanks," however I am so disapointed in your drival today after almost 99% of all who I have heard Friday and read posts tonight are PRO Palin - you are not. I hope you are proven wrong. And I think you may want to follow Kelly to the Lower 48 w/ a one-way ticket with Wooten and Monegan under each arm! I may have to hide the fact I am reading your book or give it to the Salvation Army - it's actually good, but now I am sick.
By the way, I have always been an extreme left Liberal,
however this time I know McCain/Palin are the right
choice for America. I am 46 only 2 years older than Sarah,
thus can sense her compassion and commitment to Alaska and
America!
Did you ever read the history of how Abraham Lincoln became president , the least likely of four . Palin or Obama each fit his description .
Wow, Dermot --
You must really hate the fact that people hold you accountable now with these blogs.....
And no response from you - very uncharacteristic!
I really did like your articles back when they were on the happenings around town and such - but it seems you are just getting old and bitter now....
As you look down your nose at us and scoff at our illiterate ways....remember - we are the readers...have you forgotten what true journalism was???
The following is a quote for a MA in Journalism.....maybe you should read it and think about if you still have what it takes...
"Is Journalism For You?
What is journalism?
Journalism is the timely reporting of events at the local, provincial, national and international levels. Reporting involves the gathering of information through interviewing and research, the results of which are turned into a fair and balanced story for publication or for television or radio broadcast. "
I guess you don't need to be fair and balanced and let the readers decide do you...since clearly you know better and we are but children to your whims
Dermot, sour grapes buddy, Sarah Palin, God Bless and keep you. You will be a huge asset for Alaska and America!!
Good to see, that you Dermot, that you have more faith in the leadership of Senator Barrack Hussein Obama!
Terry Donovan- You forgot one other governor turned president, Reagan.
I now deem suspect the books Dermot Cole has authored if I am to believe his slant on recent history and perceived qualifications for a candidate for public office are in line with his sentiments about our great Governor Sarah Palin. According to his logic Sarah should lower her standards to the level the democratic nominee for president has attained. I surmise if she believed that life does not begin till a baby can breathe on his/her own outside the womb and is wanted in this world then she would be worthy of higher office. If she was good friends with the Unabomber and had a man of the clothe as her mentor that condemned America on a regular basis and foments racism, then she would pass muster with Dermot. I suppose if she had a relative living in utter poverty and chose not to lend a hand then she would be qualified to hold office. But mostly if she was a part of Chicago thug politics then she would get rave reviews from the likes of Dermot, for Wasilla or Alaska is no training ground to be a heartbeat from the presidency.
I have no problems with her or this experience argument although I wish she was a little bit more libertarian. My problems are with McCain, there is no way in hell I could vote for him, no matter who he would have picked. I believe she in a way discredits herself by even being a part of his campaign. It would have been an even bolder move for her to have turned him down, stating that she was not interested in running with a liberal disguising himself as a conservative. Now if she was the one actually running for president I would vote for her.
Vote For Bob Barr if we really want solutions.
DC 4 Liberty
That headline is funny LOL
Yep, she is not qualified to serve as Vice President because she never served as Vice President of the USA before, nor served as President for that matter. And she is not a lawyer.
I guess I will have to vote for Senator McCain.
Come one people, Gov. Palin is no friend of education. First thing she did when she took office, she doubled University Tuition. What has been done for the entire education system here in the state? What about more money for pre-kindergarten education, especially for working adults?
Why would she care? She got into college looking good, and got a degree in looking good. If she is a "True Alaskan", why didn't she use the University of Alaska? Didn't even pursue additional education at U of Alaska. Nope, she'd rather have our children use the Bible as a science book.
(This comment was removed by the Newsminer.com staff. Please see our User Agreement for further information.)
I think that the last Vice President with experience skinning a moose was probably Teddy Roosevelt under President McKinley.
Here is a new and refreshing thought, maybe it should be an Obama/Palin ticket to the white house. We have had decades of old ideas and the old guard, it's time to shake things up.
P.S. Dermot your not really qualified to write political commentary, but we have been putting up with you for years, whats the diff.
Here’s the Deal: its people like Cole working for the Newspapers that are driving them “Out Of Business” Just take a look at the New York Times! Its two steps away from the grave-yard!
On Gov. Palin: You’re going to hear the “Knot-Heads yelling “She is ONLY a Governor, and don’t have the Experience for the office of V.P. of the USA.
QUESTION: What was Bill Clinton, BEFORE he became President of the United States of America?
He was a Governor of Arkansas, AND No One Ever herd of his till he Run For President of the United States of America !

And Senator Obama has what foreign policy experience?
Bueller?
Bueller?
Better to have a lack of experience at the VP level than at the President level. One MAY have to take over the presidency, the other gets it from day one.
Shame on you Dermot. You left out the bigger fact that Palin ran against Knowles (popular two-term governor, remember him?) in the general election and beat him handily. Why did you leave this fact out? Selective memory? Selective journalism? Selective history? This is wrong.
I'm sorry, you're a hack. I've lost my faith in you. Lousy, yellow journalism, Dermot. Really lousy.
If Palin is unqualified than so is Obama.
That's right Dermot. She seems like a nice person who has an easy time in a State-full of petro-dollars but McCain might not last a week and then what happens?
Oh, and I really like the attacks on the News-Miner for being too liberal. Great stuff there! I haven't laughed so hard all day. Oh yeah, I just got up.
I bet Lyda is *Green* with envy...
I just don't understand the hurtful feelings of some of these posters. Gov Palin was a breath of fresh air for Alaska and will be the same for our country. She is living the American dream and all you can do is bad mouth her. There wasn't a silver spoon in her mouth when she was born. I am relishing her debate with Joe Biden and him losing his temper and saying something stupid. He has a record of that and Sarah is calm, cool and collective and America will fall in love with her.
Quit beating a dead horse and bringing up McCain's age and health. Noone can predict when they will die so quit spinning the liberal filth.
Bottom line is with Sarah selected as a VP candidate the Democrats and liberals are scared.
And the chickens come home to roost....
All the blathering and parroting of the 'Obama doesn't have enough experience' and 'OMGWTFBBWQ! Obama doesn't wear a flag pin!!' talking points are now being turned on Palin, to no fault of her own.
Now, those of you dumb enough to utter such talking points are forced to either be consistent, stick with your jingoistic values and admit that all your talking points apply to Palin as well as Obama or be forced out as hypocrites.
You know, that's the thing about parroting talking points. They can be turned against you. Most of the anti-Obama talking points are vapid, shallow little commentaries useful only on the most obtuse among us. Ironically, if you use them, they don't make you appear witty but rather automatonic.
I hope that next time, you will remember that Rush and Hannity care only about ratings and their own bottom line. Just because they provide talking points to you doesn't mean that you are wise to utter them.
It seems pretty obvious that the negative comments are from Obama backers, and as they can see the writing on the wall, they are lashing out with their fear and character misrepresentation. Nothing is too far of a stretch; she didn't go to UA, she didn't go to Harvard, she reads the Bible, she's too young, she hasnt finished her term, she played basketball, she kills animals, she's too good looking. It's a full scale panic, and it's only just begun. By November, we wont recognize our Governor if the Obama supporters have their way.
I'm really offended at the way people treat Alaska as insignificant. Other than foreign oil, where do they think their stuff comes from? Their behinds? Come on, people.
Our family moved here in early March of last year and I LOVE the state of Alaska. I also greatly admire Mrs. Palin, even if I don't share her views on everything. I think she's exactly what McCain needed. She's new, she's fresh, she's strong and balls to the wall. She doesn't let anyone bulldoze her and I guarantee she'd be a much stronger presence than Cheney ever was for Bush. I can't say that I'd WANT Cheney to be a stronger presence, but Sarah Palin is a good thing for the Republican party to stay in this race, in my opinion.
I do wish that people would recognize the importance of our state. It's a shame there are so many stereotypes and misnomers out there. I actually had someone asked me if we had any paved roads. I also had a family member's child tell us her teacher told her everyone in Alaska still lived in igloos and ignored her when she told her she knew better than that. People need a good education on Alaska and I think they're getting ready to get just that. Congratulations, Sarah Palin!
I'm no Obama supporter. I just enjoy calling you people on your hypocrisy.
"Fear and character misrepresentation"? You just summed up the wacky, right-wing campaign against Obama right here on the News-Minus for the past several months. Did you not read my previous post, glacierles or are you being intentionally imperceptive?
Dermott: I support all of the above pro-Palin posts AND those describing your inadequacies as a commentator. Until now, I couldn't vote for Obama and didn't want to vote for McCain, but Sarah's selection has given me enthusiasm to make me a McCain/Palin supporter, both finacially and voting wise. You should show some pride in Alaska and not make us look foolish to those of the national media who follow columns such as yours. Or are you jealous that the ADN has been the only Alaskan paper quoted?
Oh_please - You're a one-sided "hypocrisy-caller". Isn't that in and of itself hypocritical?
If she is not qualified to be a vice president, then someone needs to explain to me how Barrack Hussein Obama is?
Geezzz...
We Alaskans really don't need to circle the wagons and shoot towards the center. Even though I'll probably vote for the "D" ticket this year, based on the positions of the parties at the top of the ticket, I'd still like to honor Sarah's accomplishment, and I'm glad that she will have an opportunity to bring our Alaskan issues to the national forefront. Congratulations, Sarah.
Sounds like there are a lot of people that need to look at the whole picture and not just half of it. Not all of us in Alaska are thrilled with the choice. I will be voting for Obama and proud to do so. Not all of us are overwhelmed by her beauty or pleased with her "soccer mom" credentials. Obama has substance, is genuine, and has more to offer than a just being a pretty face. Did anyone hear about an interview she did a couple of months ago where she mentioned she was unsure exactly what a VP does? And since when does being in charge of the state National Guard make you the next potential Commander in Chief? Oops, she forgot to mention in her speech that her son who joined the Army last year happened to be stationed back up here once he finished basic training...must be a coincidence which has nothing to do with her position. If something does happen to McCain is she really ready to lead the country? You've got to take the whole package into consideration, not the half that only appears to be the best. Do your research people before you're too quick to pounce on the McCain/Palin ticket.
Dermot - you are being unfairly bashed on this blog. You have some good points. The problem with your argument is: what makes a person qualified to lead or co-lead our country? This is America. Do you prefer a super-experienced snake like Cheney or a person with strong character, courage, ethics, and a mentality outside of the Washington insiders? Let's not exaggerate the position of VP or even President. These positions are backed by a multitude of counselors, advisors, etc. Leadership is a team endeavor. Sarah can handle the position.
Now, as much as I support Sarah, I cannot stand McCain. I agree with dcicconi. It appears that she may have sold her soul for this run. It may work to America's favor though as I hope her courage will withstand the tremendous pressure that will fall on her in Washington. If they win, I hope that McCain lives to regret choosing Sarah as she exposes all the garbage in the power places of our government. It did turn my stomach a bit to hear her praising McCain. What a contrast, those two politicians.
We're in for an interesting couple months. May our country survive it.
Palin has ZERO EXPERIENCE that makes her worthy of being the Vice President of the United States. By picking Palin as his Vice Presidential nominee, McCain has shown clear disdain for the office of the Presidency and the American people. Unfortunately, he's also proven what people have suspected for the past 8 years with George Bush in office - that the country is actually run by rich and powerful conglomerates and not by the president at all. Hence, you could put a complete imbecile in the presidential office, such as George Bush, which is what the power brokers of the Republican party actually prefer, and those unelected conglomerates (oil industry, etc.) would be able to control U.S. policy as they have for the past 8 years. Palin will be fine - all she has to do is sit there and look pretty.
Beauty and soccer mom do not do it for me. The fact that she doesn't lay down for the oil companies and doesn't let someone bulldoze her is my appeal. Sometimes you've either got it or you don't and I think she does.
Obama genuine? You can SAY anything well and people will believe you. A silver tongue does not make you genuine. When people are that smooth, I trust them even less. I'm sure he has genuine qualities, but the things he says are for our listening pleasure. Don't you know bait when you see it? He's a great salesman. I hate salesmen.
And I'm not going to debate over qualifications. Anyone is qualified. You do your research, you meet your people, you get your job description and you do your best. What about college students? Does a piece of paper make them qualified for the job they go into? Sadly, it doesn't all of the time. It's who you are and what you stand for in the end. People in this world are generally good enough to make the right choice. The ones who aren't usually don't vote anyway, not that I'm the judge of who is qualified to even make choices.
This is our democratic government in action for you. Pick who you like. That's what it ends up being. Don't vote on fear. Vote on what you WANT, not what you don't want.
Is that the best you can do, Dana?
Oh_please---
In an earlier post, perhaps a different thread, you insinuated some shenanigans in fund raising by McCain. Actually you used an insult when you mentioned McCain, but I expect that from such non-partisan open minded people like yourself. Nevertheless, I still have no idea what shenanigan you were referring to, and if you did answer already I apologize for missing it. Please elaborate.
This was just the first day after the announcement and all we are getting is just opinions. Who cares what all these 'wanna be analysts say'. They simply don't know how to deal with this. America has been put on notice! Washington has been put on notice! I am glad they think she is inexperienced and don't take her serious. Let's sit back and watch and enjoy how she is gonna rip them all a new one.
I sure did, glacierles!
McCain basically against the very tenets he pushed through in the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform bill and lined up a secretive private loan in order to compete with Obama. The FEC declared it legal after an investigation but boy was it hypocritical and unethical (even though in Republican Land 'legal' = 'ethical') and yes, dare I say, sleazy. Not near as sleazy as his involvement in the Keating 5 banking scandal but surely a chip in his straight talkin' maverick persona.
Oh---
McCain was cleared of any wrong doing in the Keating 5 scandal also. Sounds like a long reach for mud to throw.
Of course, for a non-partisan unbiased person like yourself, who is not backing Obama, an accusation of wrong doing is just the same as a conviction of wrong doing. "It's the seriousness of the charge that matters" was once argued by a Democratic Senator (cant remember which wingnut said that).
dirtprof, So PROVE to me that the universe defied statistical probability and just "Big Banged" into existence. Oh, you can't. Neither can anyone else. Not any better than creationists can prove their beliefs. I'm so sick of "experts" touting theory like it's fact. You believe something different that other people & they believe in something you don't. Welcome to America.
YEA PALIN!. I might not agree with everything she did in Alaska but of the four, McCain, Palin, Obama, Biden, she has the best record for honesty. Her biggest selling point is that she hasn't been in federal politics long enough to be corrupted yet.
Do you think Sarah Palin as VP would be such a big risk if instead Sarah it was Tom or brad Palin. Underneath it all it seems like more people are worried about her being a woman than her "inexperience".
What a surprise, our resident communist columnist doesn't think Palin is qualified. Hey Canada is just east of here Dermot.
None of these opinions matter a bit, Obama has the election won!
Palin was a desperate 2nd choice.
nativegaygirl-Please tell me where you got the stuff your smoking. This has unfortunatly all but locked it up for McCain. I was hoping McCain would pick Romney so both parties would destroy each other and maybe one of the third party canidates would sneak in and get something done during the next four years. For all you naysayers, If Obama gets elected he does not have the political credit needed to back down the big guns in congress, so he will fold along party lines or Biden will put his hand up his back to make his mouth move, either way everything will remain the same. If McCain is elected he will maintain the same status quo with his friends in congress and nothing will change. For the most part, until people take congress to task for their me first policy making, nothing will change. Vote for who you will, but don't expect things to get better.
Sarah Palin is the Andy Griffith of politics. And a GRANDMOTHER. Wait and see.
oddly enough that the gov. was picked to be vp excited me more than anything from the democrat convention
I am a vet, and tend to be more liberal than most, having lived and been a lobbiest in the DC areaseeing alaskas govenorstanding next to mc, with her husband and kids, looking more human and real than any politican i have seen in over 20 years, it gives me hope for both this country, and what we use as a political process
(beyond the modern focus group system that directs politicans what to promise, and who to pump, and not deliveri am not for any media elected presidentbut for citizens having the vote god luck to all the canadates
What a pack of cuckolds. She dumps you and you get aroused over it! She was hired to run the state, not to further her political ambitions.
What I want to know is how McCain is going to benefit from her "corruption fighter" image when the slime was all Republicans? Ted and River Boat Captain sycophants --- how does he do this? Gonnna throw 'em under the bus?
dog
Yes, diogenesFBKS. We all know that there is nothing corrupt on the left. The Democrats are always on the up-and-up, never lie, never cheat, never have money in their refrigerators, never give contracts to their husbands, never get caught doing anything bad. We know. We also know that McCain is the best representative of a "Republican" available and all the other Republicans were happily following him like a lamb to slaughter.
Shame on your bias Dermot. I guess we should not expect more from someone only qualified to write an opinion column. I am glad Alaskans are more educated than you give us credit for and can see through the one-sided nature of your 'opinion'. You only get one vote, and I am afraid you will sway very few to your side of the issue. I used to think you were fair and educated....now you have proven yourself just a bunch of hot air fearful of what may happen to the democratic ticket. Please continue writing about things you are educated on such as upcoming events, weather, and fundraisers. Leave your political bias at home and save yourself the little credibility that you have left!
Dermot, what do you mean, "She did not win because of her conservative credentials" etc?
Do you have some kind of mystical insight into the reasons why people voted for Sarah?
I, for one, appreciate her stand for conservative issues, morality, and taking a stand for what is right. I know many, many others who voted for her for the same reason.
You're certainly entitled to your opinion, Dermot, but please do not peesume to know why I - or others - chose Sarah to be our Governor.
Mr. Cole, as I'm not an Alaskan, I don't who the heck you are. However, this North Carolinian is ecstatic that the good people of Alaska are sharing Sarah Palin with the rest of us. I wasn't excited about John McCain - I was for Fred Thompson - but now I'm very excited about McCain/PALIN!
And since we are talking about qualifications for being VP, I don't seem to remember hearing anything from the media in 2004 that my former Senator (thank God on the former part) John Edwards wasn't qualified. He had no experience in government prior to the Senate and only a few lackluster years there. His experience was no greater than Gov. Palin's and yet you consider HER unqualified.
I'm tired of professional/career politicians serving in our highest levels of government. That was never the intent of the founders, nor is it my desire. Our earliest founders served in the highest offices, then returned to their homes as farmers. Governor Palin is a statesman (or stateswoman, if you prefer) and that is the one qualification she needs to serve. I'm sorry you prefer authoritarian government, Dermot, but don't push your desires on us. It's about time we had somebody from outside the good ole' boys club in Washington. I was not a fan of either Obama or McCain. I was going to vote for Bob Barr. Now that Palin has joined McCain's campaign, I will support that ticket. I greatly admire her as a governor. She got rid of the jet, fired the personal chef, takes the time to talk with us Alaskans when she sees us in public, and has fine conservative credetials. In fact, if you want to talk credentials, she has more executive experience than the other three people running combined.
Yes, Dana, there is corruption on both sides (another of the Great Republican Talking Points). However, if you are intellectually honest you will have to admit that in the last eight years, mostly under complete Republican legislative, judicial and executive control, Republicans have lowered the bar CONSIDERABLY regarding ethical behavior and have DWARFED corruption on the other side of the aisle. Republicans took power in the Congress and managed to go from 'Contract with America' to 'Corrupt Corporate Whores' faster than any other Congress in America's history. Fortunately, you aren't able to pull the 'the Democrats are persecuting us!' card as Republican control was complete when most of these scandals came to light.
Yes, Dana, there is corruption on both sides. But for you to downplay the amount of corruption on the Republican side lately is disingenuous.
Yes, glacierles, McCain did manage to skirt out of his scandals by defining what the definition of 'is' is (another Republican talking point that is coming back to bite them in the butt these days) but again, I differentiate between legal and ethical, something I wish more Republicans had the sense to do... When McCain accepts hidden trips and gifts from groups that stand to gain from his power and when he disavows all that he claimed to hold dear in regards to campaign financing I regard it as unethical. I don't care if it was ruled legal. And I feel the same way with Stevens. I could care less if he skirts out of his legal troubles. A PUBLIC REPRESENTATIVE ACCEPTING SECRET GIFTS AND DEALS FROM SOMEONE WHO STANDS TO GAIN FROM YOUR LEGISLATIVE POWER IS UNETHICAL. End of story.
The biggest mistake you people make is ASSUMING that those disagree with your points of view or are disgusted with Republican hypocrisy and corruption are all Evil Liberals. That crap plays well inside the Fairbanks Right-Wing Extremist Echo Chamber but not anywhere else, really.
WOW Dermot!!
Look at the can of worms you opened!!!!
Obama got a Mayor who will NEVER be re-elected and
McCain grabs the GOVERNOR and puts her up for VP!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAA!!! Talk about trumping someone!!!
Either way---What a race it's gonna be!!!
Peace
Oh_please - as I told another commenter with a nickname similar to yours a while back, I have a different view of the last 8 years than you apparently do. Insisting that the Republicans are so much worse than the Democrats is an exercise in self-delusion that you are free to indulge in.
Politicians are politicians, whether there is a (D) or an (R) behind their name. I highly doubt that those that are well-entrenched in their seat of power are above reproach.
Well, Dana, all I have to go off of are the convictions that have been rolling out of Washington and Juneau lately...
I'm not sure what you're getting at here other than the tried-and-true both-sides-are-just-as-bad meme. Could you please describe the parameters you use that allow you declare both sides as equally bad? You know, something concrete? Something more than just your speculation?
Hey, hardinglake? When you're insulting someone else's intelligence try not to misspell 'idiot'.
Since we're really in the realm of "seriousness of the charge" rather than the reality of convictions, how about:
Diane Feinstein, Harry Reid, Tony Knowles, Eliot Spitzer, William Jefferson, Jim Hayes, Sandy Berger, Bernie Ward, Bill Clinton, Ted Kennedy.........?
Hey people, Dermot hit it right on the head, especially about why Palin is so popular. She hasn't had to suffer bad economic times, until lately, and she promotes such a populist reform platform that of course it appeals to the lemmings, ergh, masses.
Maybe y'all have been taken in by one too many mooseburgers down at pioneer park or from cheering on the First Dude at the Iron Dog.
Once the national smoke clears and the rest of the nation sees that Palin really has nothing to offer the Republican party except a pretty face (and a shot at grabbing all the religious right nutcases that McCain scared away), this short-lived love fest will come to an end.
Good column, Dermot.
Alaskans would do best to stop fighting with one another. This whole experience has been rather surreal to say the least and surfing various blogs on the national level has got my personal hackles up.
One poster suggested "Palin return to the Eskimos and 10 other people that live in that wasteland." A different blog felt it should have been illegal for her to take the $$ from the Bridge to Nowhere and use it to "bribe her voters" by giving us $1200 each. (Obviously an idiot.)
She's gone to play with the big boys and she's fair game I guess. But do I really need to state that making derogatory comments about a disabled infant or using sexual/pregnancy slurs against a 16 year old girl are inappropriate? This is the trash floating around out there. At least we can make sure that our local posts are respectable - I bet they are getting increased hits right now.
Alaskans are definitely outnumbered. I would recommend that regardless of where you stand on the issue that you make sure you are well spoken and civil. The spotlight is on Alaska. It's our 15 minutes of fame as well. We're making a lasting impression; let's make it a good one.
Oh, and Dermot ... we know you're an opinion writer. Please go back to writing about the biggest cabbage and the spaghetti feed for the cancer victim. I enjoy your column and frankly when I read it; it's for that small town fluff. If I want political commentary there are about a billion places I can find it. Thanks!
That's fine, Dana. You know what the difference between me and the right-wingers on this site is? I'm not going to go to bat defending those guys because they have a 'D' next to their name.
Do you really want me to generate a list of Republicans who have been recently indicted, charged, convicted or subjected to ethics reviews? Because it's literally going to be 20-30 times longer than the list of Democrats you just provided...
The dolt who wrote the article is so ignorant as to elicit a true belly laugh. I find it heartening that John Sydney McCain saw fit to select Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential Candidate. While John Sydney McCain chooses a very straight shooting woman, Barack Hussein Obama chooses a "Good Ol'e Boy" that is virtually a Washington D. C. self-deluded, self-important parasite.
Barack Hussein Obama could learn something about true leadership and judgment (at least the exercise of SOUND JUDGMENT) by observing an experienced politician make a valuable and very intelligent decision. Barack Hussein Obama has proven his inability to make an intelligent decision by his selection of Joey Biden.
So looking at this article I find it amusing that so many deluded supporters of Barack Hussein Obama actually have (*wait for it*) the AUDACITY to criticize Sarah Palin.
Congratulations Sarah Palin; You indeed are overqualified when contrasted to Barack Hussein Obama's qualifications. Alaska will miss its gutsy and moral Governor.
Gee Dermot, are you concerned because the Obama/Biden ticket just might not make it - I consider your remarks uncalled for and unqualified - your column was a lot better when you kept you own political opinions out of it - there are those that really don't care what you think.
Oh_please - I don't defend anyone solely because they have an (R) next to their name, either, especially since I'm not one. However, I do think that any objective observer reading your commentary and mine would see that we are likely not as "objective" as we'd like to claim.
However you look at it the lady has huge stroke whether we understand or like it or not. The facts don't stack up to the reality but it is real and that is what counts. More power to her, she is a real Alaskan woman, and however it all ends up it is just great to see this happen for us.
All I know is Washington is full of a bunch of old farts. I think Sarah is one HOT babe! If you were across the negotiation table with her, wouldn't you just melt. It's time for a WOMAN to show the world what they can do!!! You GO Girl!!!!
I too wouldn't call myself someone who would agree with Dermot Cole. But I do see something good in his editorial statements. I guess its payback for giving him so much grief in the 70's when he was canvassing for McGovern.
I wonder if Wally Hickel would have any words about leaving the job here and pursuing the great promise of service in Washington. Would he do it again?
I feel misled and betrayed by the Republican party, and I don't think the agenda of the current forces in the Capitol are going to change much, no matter who is in "power".
The corporations are in control. Energy, finance, food, water, natural resources, population, are all on the list of control functions that the corporations use to grow their assets at the expense of the common person. The self-made man (or woman) cannot exist without the corporation granting them permission to do so. Look around you; how much of your world is controlled by the corporations? I don't think much will change.
Surely Governor Palin will grow into the job, but VP's have been largely ineffectual in their office, maybe a special project here or there, performing largely at the bidding of the president in the Senate, and, stepping in as necessary if the unthinkable happens. LBJ, whom history had not been too kind, was one kind of VP, established, well connected, experienced, and capable of facing up to our enemies in a time of crisis. His legacy was a failed policy in Southeast Asia, although he was responsible for some good things as well.
vodp, you're dreaming. Sarah Palin is nothing. She'll be nothing but a stool for the neocons that actually run Washington.
Dermot-This one is gonna bite ya, pal.
Amazing how many believe that Sarah Palin is nothing; I suppose those who hold that opinion simply hate women or conservatives or both. Those who hate Sarah Palin and seek to belittle her are enmeshed in loathing of people who think for themselves and who do not want the Federal Government to take control of everyone's life.
Sarah Palin will be an excellent Vice President. The Democrat Party operatives are working overtime trying to tear her down; They do not have the guts or ability to qualify to shine her boots.
You go get them Sarah!
it was incredibly cynical, selfish, and cruel to put Gov. Palin in this position. She is a very talented woman with a great future. she is also someone who, until 2007, did not even hold a passport. Serving as mayor of Wasilla and then as Gov of AK is one thing -- VP, my friends, is a tad more complicated. You all are so fond of saying how you don't care about what goes on Outside -- well, it's a big nasty world out here as Gov. Palin will quickly discover. DC is a snake pit. Bush was Gov of TX, Reagan CA. Those states are bigger than many countries -- they may have been outsiders, but they had a clue what they were getting into. Running this country is not for the faint at heart. all just for a few more votes. what was he thinking?
Ah poor misguided Andrew. Let me shine a little light on this for you:
We don't hate Sarah. I like her, personally -- she's outgoing, smart, funny, attractive. Her politics and personal views? Those are what I don't agree with.
McCain didn't pick Palin as his running mate because she's a great, capable leader. She hasn't had enough experience for that. Being governor of Alaska and baby-sitting a bunch of yahoos down in Juneau (you know, the local nutcase legislators) hardly make one qualified to lead the federal government. Managing a bunch of strip malls in Wasilla, oops, being MAYOR of strip-mall hell, hardly makes one qualified as well.
McCain picked Palin as his VP running mate because she is everything he isn't. She's pro-gun, pro-life, anitgay, pro-drilling and a woman. McCain isn't a radical Republican; he's actually moderate. He picked Palin to lure in that faction of the Republican party -- the rightwingers -- that wouldnt' vote for him.
We don't hate Palin; she's just not ready for such a task. She's a downhome girl who's going to be eaten alive be the national media.
I wonder if Carhartts if going to make a tux for bluecollar Todd?
Here, a quote from an AP story:
The first-term Alaska governor told reporters she was having fun in her new role. “It’s great to see another part of the country,” she said.
That doesn't say, "qualified world leader." That says country-come-to-town.
You still haven't answered my question, Dana. What standard have you used to determine that Democrats are just as corrupt as Republicans?
My contention is that Republicans are currently far more corrupt than Democrats. I mentioned the fact that even though the entire federal government was controlled by Republicans as late as 2006, the vast number of corruption investigations and convictions have been of Republicans. Don't you find that strange, Dana?
It has been proven that the Bush administration has been packing the Justice Department with Bush loyalists and extremists and, yet, most of the investigations have been of Republicans. Isn't that weird? You'd THINK that when partisan Republicans control the Justice Department that they would be gunning for Democrats. But that hasn't happened. I wonder why?
It also occurred to me that the list of corrupt Democrats you came up with are spread over the entire nation. I can come up with a longer list of corrupt Republicans from Alaska ALONE.
Kindly awaiting your response. Love, Oh_please.
Cole brothers, you are missing a golden opportunity. Write a book about her. Do it fast and it could produce some real income for you.
For once, I agree with you, Dermot. Thanks for the great editorial.
"she was not Frank Murkowski" got my vote for governor.
"she is not Joe Biden" gets my vote for VP.
"She doesn't pay attention to Dermit Cole" makes me wish I was a Democrat so I could vote twice.
"She hasn't had enough experience for that." And how much executive experience does Obama have? So where is the rule that gives the minimum standard for experience. I know it's a tough thing to read the constitution. But then again, after Obama's elected. We won't have to follow that old piece of paper will we. "CHANGE"!
Palin isn't a "good-old-boy". She's got my vote.
Palin uses guns responsibly. She's got my vote.
Palin chose the life of her child over personal inconvenience. She's got my vote.
Palin isn't trying to give $845 BILLION to the UN to take U.S. sovereignty away (S 2433, read it & weep). She's got my vote.
And my wife's vote, & so far the vote of every person I've talked to who can vote.
The DailyKos is circulating a rumor that Trig is really Sarah's oldest daughter's son. Someone on this board made a vague reference to this rumor. Coward! Dirty, rotten Coward! LittleGreenFootballs.com is posting about a new anti-Palin website and traced its URL back to the Obama campaign. This is going to get so ugly and vicious. I absolutely hate what the radical left will do to our governor's reputation. They trash our Armed Forces, our state, our country, and they trash our best citizens. She embodies everything good about Alaska, motherhood, and what real men look for in a wife/partner.
What we really need is another Ronald Reagan. He was the president of the Screen Writers Guild, then led the "Democrats for Richard Nixon". He was Governor for about 20 years. He was charismatic, a good speaker, and gave people confidence. Kind of like Sarah, huh?
Hey prospector, that rumor has actually gone around Alaska since Trig was born.
And the race is going to get ugly, well, uglier -- that's what happens in politics. Sarah had better be prepared for that and start learning to sling mud right back.
Palin VP! Why? -->> Money! -> Oil! -> BIG OIL!
Palin is to smart for AK and BIG OIL realized that! They want her out of AK so the "gas cards" get shuffled again! Wasn’t the Alaska gas pipeline the biggest construction project in North America? BIG OIL (DENALI) doesn’t want to loose that project (and can’t afford that)!
Yeah, akchick, but that whole 'illegally arming anti-democracy death squads in Nicaragua' and 'trading arms to terrorists for hostages' thing didn't work out too well for him...
He did grow the federal government and debt almost as large as Dubya has, though. So he has that going for him, which is nice.
Attention all Alaskans!!! We hear in Alaska love our Governor and might have our differences but what we have here, is that we are being invaded by bloggers from the outside democrat machine trying to downplay and disrespect our genuine Governor. These outside paid bloggers have not lived the life we all enjoy here in Alaska and could not handle the life we all are engaged in and by their posts they know nothing of our governor and it shows.
I think you have a problem with women in power positions that take care of business. We are all the better for her governorship. Thank god for SARA PALIN!
I live in Squarebanks, think SaraH has done a pretty good job as governor, especially dealing with the oil stuff, and am annoyed that she wishes to leave before her work is completed.
You might want to get on your tinfoil hat, sourdoughjoe. I hear those Evil Libs can read minds now!
Ok Oh_please: Hmmm. Well, I do think it strange that primarily Republicans have been investigated - and I'm not sure I fully agree, although I'll admit I haven't researched it fully (I'm willing to bet that media plays a role - look up "bonusgate" for example..., but ah well).
Investigations are less interesting than convictions, I might add and the last conviction I'm familiar with was that of Bernie Ward - although obviously he's not a working member of the government, just a prominent liberal.
I'd like to see your lists of "investigated" and "convicted" Republicans to compare it to Democrats, although "convicted" is much more interesting....Perhaps I've missed the news...? Care to share? I'm willing to look - corruption stinks - I just think you are being a wee-bit biased without just cause.
OK, so check out www.huffingtonpost.com
Sorry, sourdoughjoe, I'm an Alaskan. The outside bloggers I've seen on this site have been only supportive of Palin, someone they know nothing about except for what they've googled in the last 10 minutes. What this proves is that McCain did indeed serve up a political masterstroke with his choice of McPalin. These people are basically forming their opinions on the characterizations of McPalin's image that have just emerged--a mother, a moose-skinner, a tough Alaskan, a reformer. These characterizations may or may not actually have any translation into real world politics yet many who were formerly uncomfortable with McCain suddenly have forgotten that based on Palin's 15 minutes of fame. In other words, he snowed you.
McCain knew that people would either be too reticent to go after her record--she is a mother who chose (note: she had a choice) not to abort her disabled fetus after all--or they would be wowed by her hotness (I wouldn't mention it if I hadn't seen numerous comments here and elsewhere saying exactly that!) or they would see him as a man of the people for picking a reformer. He figured no one would notice that he employed Bush-like judgment (i.e., Don't give me in-depth facts, I'm the decider!!) by picking a VP based on one meeting with her and the image she was projecting. McCain has said he doesn't view the VP position as important, but yet here we are debating her qualifications, not his because that is what he wanted to happen. He knew he was struggling and needed a distraction. Boy did he get one. I only hope you people can wake up to the fact that we need someone who doesn't just go with his gut the way Bush has done the last 8 years.
BTW, I'm no diehard Obama fan, but I've done (and am continuing to do) my research, and I simply do not like what I see in McCain. From what I've seen and read, Obama believes in what he is doing and sincerely wants to restore an air of responsibility to Americans. We don't have to be greedy. We don't have to be the overindulgent, arrogant bullies of the world, but there are deliberate steps we must take to get there.
Not surprising, considering the slant from Arianna. Thanks, Sly.
Can you find an opposing viewpoint from a right-wing site?
Educate yourself:
http://www.ontheissues.org/2008/Sarah_Pa...
She opposes more federal funding for healthcare. She thinks people need to take "personal responsibility" for their health. When someone is faced with cancer, loses their job because they can't work because of their cancer, and then loses their health insurance as a result, "personal responsibility" is stripped away. Healthcare should not be a "market," a "business." Everyone should receive healthcare!
She opposes replacing coal and oil with alternatives.
She opposes getting the US out of Iraq. "Our oil is under their soil."
She opposed banning polluting water where salmon spawn.
She's pro life, but also pro death penalty. Lifelong NRA member.
Regardless, republican/democrat. . . these labels create separation, not unity. We do not live in a bubble. There is a whole world out there. Don't you ever stop and ask yourself how the United States created such a path of divisiveness? We've done it this way for this long, so that makes it right?
I know a lot of nice hockey moms, with children, but I wouldn't necessarily want them as my vice-president. And by that, I mean educate yourself on the candidates,
not just by some newspaper article. You can't throw names likes Washington and Lincoln out there, and compare her to them, if you really don't know anything about either one of them.
For those screaming unqualified, the only qualification that matters is that the Republican Presidential Nominee picked our Governor to be his Vice Presidential Nominee. Lack of experience in politics may be an asset, and her experience at fighting the establishment is a matter of record. She is smart and makes sound decisions. She will offer a fresh perspective and not be just a 'yes-woman'. She can think on her feet and is a constitutional conservative. She has attended two conventions for State Governors, and as a Governor, she knows the challenges facing States when it comes to implementing federal legislation on energy, education, and health care reform. She knows first hand what it takes to overcome the system of good old boy politics, and has not lost touch with where she came from. The more I think about it the better Senator McCain's choice sounds to me.
I am curious though how she is going to convince Washington D.C. that she can keep living in Wasilla and do the job just fine. If anyone can pull it off it will be her.... smiles...
But tolate, she's a hockey mom! with kids! and she hunts! and eats moose! and can drive a snowmachine! of course we should put her in office, what are you thinking??????? Who cares about the issues when we have the almight Sarah Palin running for the vice presidency!
The hue and cry from the anti-Sarah Palin crowd is laughable. The honesty, integrity and backbone of Sarah Palin is probably the prime reason that the Barack Hussein Obama campaign has put together their hatchet-job animals to attempt to denigrate Sarah Palin and her forthright and ethical character.
The evil inherent in the Marxist powers of the current Democrat Party is palpable. The Barack Hussein Obama Chicago-Trained Political Machine is running scared. If it were not why has it not immediately started spreading hateful lies that accuse Sarah Palin of engaging in conduct that is classically the type of conduct that a Democrat from Washington D. C., or Chicago, would not consider to be wrong. The Barack Hussein Obama machine is trying to paint Sarah Palin with the same offal that afflicts the Democrat Leadership; The Barack Hussein Obama Political Machine's lack of ethics and honesty shines through most convincingly because of his lies and evil garbage that the Democrat Presidential Candidate seeks to pin on Sarah Palin.
I for one am encouraged that the evil actions of the Barack Hussein Obama Chicago-Trained political machine are being highlighted and disclosed for all to see so very promptly after the selection of Sarah Palin as John Sydney McCain's Vice Presidential candidate.
Stories like this one tell more about the evil of Barack Hussein Obama and the Democrat Political Machine than they could ever start to tell about Sarah Palin. Congratulations Sarah; You have the vipers slithering away scared!
A wonderful sight to see.
You never answered my questions, Dana...
And you are avoiding mine.
I must have missed Dermot's column saying Obama was unqualified to be president because he has ZERO executive experience and has spent his whole brief time in the Senate campaigning for another office. It is audacious to declare Gov. Palin unfit compared to Obama. But then as multiple readers have pointed out, Dermot has often favored the left side of the political spectrum. You know, as a kid I delivered the News-Miner and I have mostly enjoyed reading it over the years. But this column, and a second similar one on the editorial page, have convinced me Fairbanks needs a new newspaper. I think I will look elsewhere for my news as long as such one-sided editorials and columns appear in this paper.
Actually, Andrew Insert-Middle-Name-Here Briseno, if you knew what you were talking about, you would know that the Obama campaign as said very little about Palin's nomination. The only new ad the Obama campaign as put forward is another John McCain ad.
Your pompous rhetoric regarding a political official's ties to a Midwest city are rather antediluvian in your attempt to tarnish the reputation of a sitting U.S. Senator. See, I can use big words too.
And Fairbanks55, they're called EDITORIALS and Dermot's a COLUMNITST. They don't have to reflect YOUR opinion, or anyone elses. It astounds me that you people think the DNM should be a cheerleader for whatever cause the masses are exicted about at the moment.
It's ridiculous for people to suggest that Obama's as unqualified for national office as Sarah. He's a top-of-his-class-at-Harvard, professor of Constitutional Law with 12 years in the legislature of a big state and 4 very accomplished years in the U.S. Senate. Furthermore, if you read his books, his legislation, or his policy papers, you'll see he has a DEEP understanding of foreign affairs and every other major national issue. Palin does not. She may be a breath of fresh air compared to the corrupt Republican machine of Stevens and Young, but that's a pretty low bar, and it's far from qualifying her to be vice-president.
She knows Alaska issues, but she doesn't know national issues very well, and her positions are just kooky. She's not only against the right to choose but any form of birth control whatsoever, including condoms. She's against objective science education. By her own admission, she doesn't know exactly what the vice-president is supposed to do, and she hasn't been following the war in Iraq all that closely.
She's a very nice lady and seems smarter than McCain, but this just is NOT the job for her.
Well said, Setec. You have made several valid points that the residents of Alaska are overlooking.
When Ronald Reagan ran for President in 1980 he had absolutely no substantive foreign policy experience. His only prior elected experience was serving as Governor of California for eight years (1968-1976).
http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/node/8384
Sarah is the ONLY of the four candidates with executive experience. The other three are senators, which means all they know how to do is give speeches. No senator has been elected president since JFK in 1960. Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and Bush-43 were ALL governors, each with no foreign policy experience when they took office. Carter was a farmer, Reagan an actor, Clinton a lawyer, and Bush-43 a business executive.
The future word is remember... when we took Custer out, all this land is Indian land and you are tenants. Respect our land and we will respect your technology.
I've been reading all of the comments here about Gov. Palin's qualifications, and I have only 1 comment to make. What kind of qualifications did Pres. Reagan have to run for President? I know he was governor of California, but what sort of foreign policy experience did he have? In my opinion, he was one of the best presidents we ever had.
Let me get this straight. According to the Anchorage Daily News, Palin was out of state four months ago, in Texas, when she went into labor prematurely with a known-to-be developmentally disabled baby, and she hung around, delivered a speech, and then got on a plane to Alaska?
Palin's water broke AND she was having contractions which she recognized were NOT Braxton-Hicks. But she stayed in Texas to deliver a speech.
She then got on a plane, contractions continuing, with a stopover where she had to change planes. Now we're talking about TWO take-offs and landings, the plane's cabin pressurizing and depressurizing twice. She flew for a total of 9 hours and never informed the airlines, the pilot or the flight attendants that she was pregnant with a medical situation. Once on the ground in Alaska, she then travelled for at least another couple of hours before reaching her home hospital.
The woman is a feather brain. She put her life and that of her unborn child's at risk, not to mention she showed utter disregard for the other passengers on the plane(s) whose lives would have to be interrupted should the plane have to detour for an emergency landing. This woman's judgment is not questionable; her judgment is bad.
http://www.adn.com/626/story/382864.html...
Taken from article on Palin's pregnant travel, as linked above:
"I am not a glutton for pain and punishment. I would have never wanted to travel had I been fully engaged in labor," Palin said. After four kids, the governor said, she knew what labor felt like, and she wasn't in labor.
"she consulted with her doctor, family physician Cathy Baldwin-Johnson, who is based in the Valley and has delivered lots of babies"
"I don't think it was unreasonable for her to continue to travel back," Baldwin-Johnson said.
Did you read the article? End Of Story dweebo.
Dermot's article is the truth, pure and simple. A mayor of a city of 9,000 country folks, getting 600+ votes, is hardly qualified even if you include her being gov of this state's 360,000 people. She's even not qualified to lead a large US city like Phoenix Arizona with 4 million, let alone the USA's 360,000,000+ people. Being the gov during a good time of record state surplus and handouts of $1,200 would make any politician popular and hardly test their merit or decision making abilities. Oh, and it seems corruption crept into her office just as fast as all other politicians in this state, dem or rep. She'll be back, McCain-Palin is going no where.
Funny emotional we can be responding to an editorial written by a sour old man. Mr. Cole lets his emotions pour out in his editorial, and that's fine. He will get his 15 minutes of fame.
"There is nothing about Obama, except for what has been made of him by the national news media. What has he done? Go ahead and look for yourselves. Once you do that, please understand that just because he is just building his resume and has no presidential experience whatsoever, it does not mean that he cannot be president if elected by us. The President makes no decisions without consulting his advisors.
Palin has a excellent resume already. She has accomplished quite a lot in her few years as a mayor and now Governor. In fact, in two years she has accomplished a lot more than quite a lot of governors throughout the US. Senators and governors have no presidential nor vice presidential qualifications, regardless of how much some of us wish it to be so. An elected president learns his job while in office, and there is where a vice president learns his, too. In my view, it's about time to have a vice president learning "her" job. I don't care for McCain very much, but Palin has in fact energized a lot of people from across the isle. She is new blood, young, and from outside the cesspool of Washington. Right now she is all alone in a pool of sharks, and my wish is that she hold her own against all the dirty politics that's to come (e.g. Cole's editorial above).
She is making a lot of Alaskans proud.
Well said Ray =) I am so proud of our Sara and she has my full support every step of the way!
Dermot Cole, I'd love to see you take a fall off your high horse. You've never impressed me....
Excellent column. Judging by the number of negative comments, its clear why Palin was elected and why she is popular. Sometimes I get nostalgic about Alaska and miss the place. But reading the above comments quickly brings me back to reality. I'm really glad I left and have no desire to return. Amazing how Scandinavia has similar stunning country and perhaps the most liberal politics on the planet - to go with highest standard of living as well. Too bad that Alaska is stuck with such a dimwitted, small minded populace.
Folks post using "pen names" and they profess to speak honestly and clearly when, among other things, they continually denigrate any Republican who does not bow and worship their god, Barack Hussein Obama and his Chicago political henchmen's notion of "CHANGE"...... Yes I suppose from the vantage point of most politicians the "CHANGE" brought to the election process by Barack Hussein Obama and his sub rosa spokes-holes is INDEED a "CHANGE" that they can believe in; so also would be any other vile disgusting and immoral act that the Barack Hussein Obama campaign might fabricate next out of whole-cloth.
The column; Plays well to encapsulate the aberrant "feelings" of the Barack Hussein Obama minions who what the "CHANGE of their current messiah..... So goes Democrat Politics in the 21st Century....
I say again: Dermot, you must also be the the village idoit Whitaker's political advisor. Bad judgement and poor conclusions have been your trademark...
Well said Hardinglake!!
First, I am NOT a Republican!! I am a 28 yr member of the AIP. I think Geo Bush will go down as the single worst President in our Nation's history. With all that said, I will be voting for John McCain now that he has picked Sarah Palin to run with him. As a vet, I honor and respect John McCain for his service to our Nation, but I DO NOT want him as our President!! Now that he has picked his running mate, I am thrilled at him and at the ticket and will vote for them even though I disagree with his war stance and I am pro choice. We cannot afford to have BHO as our President. Lets be happy we will now have a responsible voice in the Executive office and an Alaskan that will be primed for the Presidency in four years!!
I am a conservative that has voted almost exclusively with the Republican or Libertarian Parties since I turned 18 over 20 years ago. With that said, I disagree with McCain's choice of Sarah Palin for VP. No liberal leanings here, I just don't think she has the integrity or experience to do the job.
Good job, Dermot Cole.
Reading these "comments" reminds me of a NEWSWEEK article I read a few months ago:
*****
"Some readers’ online comments are insightful. But most of them have little to do with the post in question. Instead, the exchanges quickly descend into what Internet lexicographers call "flame wars"--malicious, escalating, ad hominem attacks on the rival candidate and anyone dumb, deluded or debased enough even consider voting for him or her.
Sociologists, in fact, have a name for this process: "infrahumanization," or, as "GlennWSmith" writes at Open Left, "the tendency for in-group members to strip out-groups of full human emotions and capabilities." In other words, infrahumanization occurs when "we" stop seeing "them" as real, live people. And it's not "limited to the close-minded and the bigoted," as Smith notes. Instead, it "seems to be rather universal."
As the campaign drags on and persons on either side dig in, the infrahumanization is clearly increasing in intensity. Of course, infrahumanization occurs every election cycle. But this time around, the Internet--where supporters establish the public tone of debate--is undeniably an aggravating factor. Research has shown that "physical proximity usually mitigates against the infrahumanizing tendency we all seem to share"--and proximity is precisely what the Web prohibits. Couple online anonymity with an endless, evenly matched campaign centered not on policy differences but on personal qualities--including the sensitive issues of race and gender--and you've got a recipe for a whole new level of divisive hostility.
Passion, of course, is fine. Calling someone a "monster"? Sort of counterproductive. But the fact is, one voice of reason (on either side of an issue) can't do nearly as much damage as millions of anonymous, "infrahumanizing" voices. And they only seem to be getting louder."
*****
My solution for "infrahumanization" is to tear away the anonymity of the Internet by allowing comments from only those who provide a face picture, full name and telephone number, email address and contact information (including street address).
Then let's see how many of you continue to harass, belittle, and otherwise defame good people who happen to hold opinions different than your own. You may be surprised that those to whom you direct your venom may actually be someone you work with, or a neighbor, your pastor, even a person you call a "friend."
Lest you think me hypocritical for appearing online today as "anonymous," I am signing up to be a "verified" (registered) user to lend credibility to my opinion. (New-Miner says it takes awhile to become "verified.")
Listen ... I defend your right to your opinion, even if I disagree with it; but I will never insult you for it. Choose the higher ground, Alaskans -- debate the issues and leave the insults out of your comments. Thank you.
The Rebublicans in Washington can't govern but they sure can campaign! Anyone will be better than what we now have in the White House. I'm sure we'll see McCain and Pailin chasing after Gustav--somewhat out of genuine concern but mostly out of the hope for political gain. I don't know about you, but I remember the national disgrace of 3 years ago when Katrina hit. Goes to show you that politicians are great image builders.
Good debate going on here. But please, limit criticisms to the facts and opinions and quit stooping low to name call those you don't agree with. No one is perfect--including Dermot and me!
akchick- Reagan was Governor of California for 8 years. Jeeze Louise - do your homework.
Both parties suck. Both have their share of bad guys and very few good guys. Neither party truly gives a rat's ass about any of us. However, if I have to choose one I will choose the guy that doesn't call his wife a trollop and the c-word. You know, the same guy that cheated on his first wife and dumped her for the very rich "trollop". (No, I didn't like the Clintons either) I am also not interested in voting for a woman who has lied to us several times in the last few months regarding the Monegan issue and the VP issue.
do you really think that when john mccain asked her to be vp, she just said, "sure!" and jumped right into it? I'm pretty sure that she thought long and hard about it and knew what was coming to her in regards to the dems slamming her and having america scrutinize and looking at her life through a microscope.
i am proud that she took this on. proud that she believes she can help john mccain in leading our country. i dont see anything in her life that says, "political gain" at all. she is for the ppl. she is on our side.
and on a side note, i didn't vote for her. i thought she wasn't "experienced", but i have seen who/what she is, and changed my mind. dear Lord, am i a flip-flopper??
You know, since we are human and not robots, we will never agree 100% with any one person on every single issue. That being said, while I don't necessarily agree with ALL of her politics, I am going on gut instinct on this one...of the 2 tickets, she is the best choice.
Why? As a life-long Alaskan, I know what with Palin in office, Alaska will be at the forefront of some vital decision making in the near future, and she will have the best interests of we Alaskans at heart.
Experience? Let's really compare what she has done/is doing to that of Obama/Biden. I support her MORE because of her enthusiasm, her bold decision making, her ability to tackle issues head on (even TROOPER-GATE as some are calling it), and not shy away from media-hoopla.
Furthermore, I support her MORE for her "lack of experience" simply because she has NOT (yet)been tainted by politics. She's REAL--she is a Mother, hockey Mom, hunter, fisher, and has qualities that appeal to us REAL people with families. She has a son who will be an Army soldier overseas, so don't try to tell me she knows nothing about foreign policy--I would be willing to bet she has done her homework with a kid in the Army. She doesnt strike me as someone who waves as he leaves and just sends bi-monthly care packages to him in Iraq. She will take OUR KIDS into account when considering foreign policy--it hits home for HER, so she KNOWS how to make it hit home for the rest of us.
Oh, and enjoy that extra $1200 per person that she fought for here in a few days (and while you are spending it on your insane gas bills, remember what she has done for each of us..) I have a better idea...those of you who OPPOSE and say that she hasnt done anything POSITIVE for us in Alaska would gladly turn over your PFD/energy relief check(s) to the Obama/BInlaDEN campaign, wouldnt you???
She faked everyone out by claiming to be against the $$$ for the "bridge to nowhere", yet she kept all that money to spend on other things, sooooo, uh, yeah, she is totally for earmarks (which it sounds like Alaska needs), but I wonder how McCain will explain this one.
p.s. When I see Cindy McCain on ABC sunday explain Palin's foreign credentials as "...well you know that Alaska is very close to Russian..." I worry. I worry ALOT.
``She's not qualified, she doesn't have the judgment, to be next in line to the president of the United States,'' Larry Persily, who until June worked in the governor's Washington office as a congressional liaison, said in a phone interview yesterday.
Do you think she can handle John McCains wild temper? See video!
Can you imagine Sara in the ladies spot behind closed doors?

if you were so worried about the anonymity of the posts - and you are becoming a verified member - why didn't you just place your name in your post....
kinda funny you have one post defending this column and harping on Dermot's favorite topic...
10-to-1 this user is one of the Dermot Brothers or another at the DNM...

Also - UsCitizen...u identified yourself as an outsider - so go comment in the New York Times where you belong!
I am an Alaskan and I agree 110% with Dermot, who I can't believe was called a liberal in this discussion - although, in Fairbanks anyone short of John Wayne is considered a liberal.
McCain's VP pick was reckless, reactionary (to Clinton) and strictly strategic (campaign-based, not governing-based).
This electoral move is irresponsible to the nation and damaging to Alaska, since: (1) Palin being marketed as a "maverick" completely throws Young and Stevens under the bus, bringing the national spotlight to the corruption issues that muddy the image of Alaskan politics, tainting future Alaskan pork potential (which we Alaskans love so much), jeopardizing Young and Steven's re-election bids, and weakening their influence in DC (all of which I am OK with, but nonetheless harmful to status quo in AK); and (2) an Alaskan in the White House will bring greater scrutiny to any program that benefits Alaska. Having a strongarm in Congress to wrangle more funds our way is acceptable to the national media to some extent (its what legislators do best), but you can't do that in a leadership position in the executive branch with its 'national constituency'. Presidents and VPs are in the light too much to direct funds back home, except for Dick Cheney, who funneled obscene amounts of money to his Halliburton buddies, but he has a tad bit more power, influence, intelligence and experience than our 'hockey mom'.
Dermot, you rock! Say it like it is! But please tell me this is really just a big joke and she really isn't the choice. PLEASE!
Well guys, this is the first time I visited this site, and I started from the bottom.
Got as far as my ol' FDNM website friend gopking at 3:11 on 8/30.
That, to me, is the point.
This country was never intended to be ruled over by professional, career politicians.
We are supposed to be a country of citizen legislators, who serve a term or two and go home to our jobs and lives.
That way, the lawmakers stay in touch with the realities that most of us live with, because they live it too.
It is these career politicians who have gotten us into this corrupt mess that is DC and plagues the country.
Statesmen. A good head on one's shoulders, integrity, intelligence and an ability to learn and to make judgments for the right reasons, common sense...so many of these qualities are the qualifications.
I am qualified. Many of you are qualified. If the country operated the way it was intended--with citizen legislators--it would be a better place indeed.
Sarah is eminently qualified.
I don't want to lose her as my Gov. I see noone to replace her. I wasn't thrilled when Parnell won the Lt. Gov. race. His gig is, he got lucky when his star got hitched to Sarah.
But I will support her and Todd's decision, since this is what they want to do. She's tough. I predict she'll hold up under the media pressure with grace and dignity, and the backing of her loving family.
National news reports now saying Palin a supporter of AIP, based on a speech she gave in Fairbanks. This is about to get even funnier!
MSNBC just reported in ~Breakng News~ that Palin has hired an attorney because of "Troopergate"
I think Sarah Palin is probably a better shot than Dick Cheney.
This would have been an appropriate discussion to have through the last several weeks and months, but the choice is made. Who in the world would switch from voting for McCain to Obama based on Palin? You'd have to have a teenager's complete lack of undertstanding of the ways of the world to vote for Barrack Obama. Welfare makes slaves of people...the people you take from AND the people you give to. Taxes deter investment. People should be free to give to charity as they will, or not at all...not have their worked-for money taken and given to people who won't work.
You sir have confirmed what I have always thought,YOU ARE AN IDIOT!
How about that $1200 socialist check reduced to $600 and the rest sent to Oregonians? Yes, Alaskans, your oil checks will be an issue in this election and you will NOT like what you hear. No big deal, Palin will be gone by Tuesday night.
Wow, this from MSNBC:
The current mayor of Wasilla, Dianne M. Keller, said she had not heard of any efforts to look into Ms. Palin’s background. And Randy Ruedrich, the state Republican Party chairman, said he knew nothing of any vetting that had been conducted.
jpr9954, from North Carolina is correct. I am currently vacationing in North Carolina and have talked to lots of the locals since Sarah was appointed. I have heard lots of comments like 'I was a Hillary fan but have decided to vote for McCain/Palin-'My father would roll over in his grave if he found out that I am, for the first time, going to vote for a Republican'. Almost everyone I have talked with says they are going to vote Republican because of Sarah's nomination. She is seems to be America's sweetheart.
You 'fellow travelers' with Obama; keep on trying but you are going to be crying in your latte.
Dermot Cole’s Column should be retitled – What Interests and Benefits Dermot Cole
In fact, the purpose of Mr. Cole’s column is as a general interest column. His column has become his personal forum to report on his views. In fact, in the last 2 weeks he wrote on Ballot Measure 4 and his decision to vote No, while his wife was going to vote Yes. Is there so little to report on in this town, that the news of the day centers on the Cole’s opinions at the poles? It appears so.
I will admit that for once, he did include some intelligent writings in his Ballot articles. I have to cry foul today with this personal attack on Sarah Palin! Mr. Cole alerted all to the “unqualified candidate”, yet he did not provide fair reporting and outline the actual qualifications – especially for the general readers who do not know what the qualifications really are.
I must go on to say that due to the unsavory writings in DNM, I often turn to fact based papers for the real news and stick to the DNM for the local events, deals and localized news I can’t get anywhere else. It is frustrating to have only one source of news in this town and expect that it is reliable and even truthful. I know it is a far cry from either!
When thinking about the Detroit Free Press, and New York Times, I wonder if Dermot would be qualified to work for them?! If I had a column on Columnists, I’d have to include one on Dermot – “Dermot is the most qualified columnist to write for the Ester Republic!” This style of journalism is positive and upbeat. Yes, I’m looking at his positive attribute of liberal trash talk & suggesting a healthy forum where he will excel and be kindly received. However, if he were to stick to writing articles about General Interest, my column would support his continued qualified employment at the DNM.
Who are we really representing? Who is Dermot really representing?! What special interest groups are funding this paper and Dermot Cole?
As Mitch Albom did with Morrie Schwartz, Dermot should do with Mitch Albom. I’d propose a mentorship of sorts…. Every week Mitch could mentor Dermot on writing nice award winning columns that increase sales and make people happy in the process. Mitch started out writing about Sports, but was later asked to add a general interest column to both the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News - later syndicated across the country. Mitch’s column deals with American life and values, something Dermot’s column has forgotten. Mitch’s columns have won countless awards and are above board. Mitch sells decency and papers.
This certainly is the time to invite Mitch to the table. The nation is coming to Alaska – to find out anything they can about Palin – the good and the bad. This could be a great time for this State! We can choose to be a bunch of ill-behaved children – bickering, back-biting and speaking badly about all we are blessed with – or we can find the positives about Palin and this great State of Alaska. We could see a last minute fall cash infusion from politically minded tourists and reporters this year if we play our cards right. We could see the Governor of the 49th State become Vice-President, or at least have a positive campaign. The alternative is to prove to the world we are haters and a bunch of back-woods infighters who should be cut off / exiled from the Outside for a reason.
OBAMA IS GOING TO WIN AND PALIN IS JUST WASTING HER LITTLE OLE TIME
I cannot understand why any Hillary Clinton supporter would EVER vote for Sarah Palin. The only thing they have in common is their genetic chromosome. They are complete opposites in their political ideology. Notwithstanding, one woman has an extremely well defined platform and brilliant ideas and the other does not. See if you can decide which is which.
If women say they are switching their support from Democratic to Republican because they wanted to vote for Hillary and could not, I find it odd that they would think that voting for Sarah is the answer. Perhaps they never really understood what voting for a woman meant in the first place -- and they deserve what they will get.
Unfortunately, for all the rest of us who are sick to death of the last eight years of lies and hypocrisy, wars and cronyism, it would be better if America's voters made an informed voting decision which is NOT based on whether Sarah has "become America's sweetheart". Running for the office of VP of the 50 United States has nothing to do with cute, charming, or gun totin'.
Furthermore, the very fact that a lot of men have expressed interest in her flirty little ways and cute bun, also shows that men in this country have not evolved much past the late 50's.
I thought we had learned a few things about equality during the latter part of the twentieth century.
Obviously, I was wrong.
Obama, here I come!
icerider, i dont understand a thing you are saying in your response to my post. you dont like either candidate? well, news for you! i dont either! what i smoke is none of your business!
