Obama listens

To the editor:

A round-trip to Fairbanks from Huslia is $400. A gallon of gas is $5.75 a gallon and most machines out there are two-stroke and require oil at about $8 a quart. Food is at about a 500 percent markup.

The community has no industry, the poorest education in the U.S. and the poorest medical, and dental located in Fairbanks (which is our free health care). Our ATVs, boats, motors, shopping and heating are not free (as many ignorant people believe), and the water looks and smells of crap. This is all thanks to the beautiful swap of our lands and way of life by the great founding fathers of this nation.

No, I do not want a free piece of anything. I want a president that may offer a chance for something different. No, my people living in rural Alaska do not have the finances to up and move their whole families to urban financial opportunities.

This presidential candidate is the first to acknowledge my people and dire situation. Perhaps my people will get a chance at obtaining a qualified education. Perhaps my people will be allowed to use our 40-acre family allotments for commercial use along with subsistence purposes. It is said that we sit and wait for hand-outs. That is how our system was set up by the founding fathers. If you are in the Lower 48, do you see an Indian reservation in a nice wooded farming area along a major interstate? Nope, you must go at least a hundred miles down a busted road in the middle of the desert.

I am presently in North Carolina visiting my grandchildren. Day before yesterday I paid $3.38 per gallon of gasoline. Everything is a lot less expensive here and my retirement income would go a lot further, but I wouldn' live in the lower 48 for all the tea in China. I prefer to stay in God's country where I have lived for the last 46 years, that's my choice. If you choose to live in a a more rural (and more expensive place) than I do then you should be willing to pay for your choice and all the advantages it holds for you. I am not Native bashing, just looking at things the way they are. If you think Obama will provide you with all you need then by all means vote for him, just don't complain to me if you get your socialist heaven. Remember; from each according to his abilities-to each according to his needs. (Karl Marx)

Our founding fathers gave us ALL the ability to make our lives what we want them to be. Some goals are harder than others. Hard work and accountability are required to maintain your freedom.

When I see people rally around Barack Obama it brings back memories of Jim Jones leading his followers off to Guyana. What I see are disgruntled and misguided American citizens.

If Barack Obama is our next president, we are all obligated to show him the respect of being our leader, something that has been in short supply lately. But remember that a vote for Barack Obama is not a vote for your country, it is a show of anger and frustration.

Let's get real, Obama, much like any other persons running for election will & do say anything they think the voters want to hear, just to get elected. It it that simple, so don't be stupid!

I agree that Obama is the most likely to help all of us of any candidate we've ever had. And I hear and understand the anger. It IS the fault of the early government that Indian reservations are where they are. There are many reasons for anger, despite the incredibly ignorant comments above. But in a weird way, I think Native people might be fortunate to be shut out by the powers that be. Because it means whatever solution Native people reach--and you will reach a solution--you will only owe to our Creator, true friends, and your own determination and vision. Don't whine please, or maybe go ahead and whine, but then find a way to be prosperous without help from this maggot-eaten, bloated system of power that we now live under. I'll be right behind you!

For all the the Obama supporters (white- black - green - yellow - orange - pink - brown - lavender - and any other color I failed to mention)

    The Game Plan of Change:

“Take the ideas of the masses (scattered and unsystematic ideas) and concentrate them (through study turn them into concentrated and systematic ideas), then go to the masses and propagate and explain these ideas until the masses embrace them as their own, hold fast to them and translate them into action, and test the correctness of these ideas in such action. Then once again concentrate ideas from the masses and once again go to the masses so that the ideas are persevered in and carried through. And so on, over and over again in an endless spiral, with the ideas becoming more correct, more vital and richer each time. Such is the Marxist theory of knowledge.”

Nice editorial. Be sure that you don't expect Obama to increase straight-up handouts, because he's not like some past Democrats who would have done that. Do look for him to push hard for improvements in education, infrastructure, and lowering the crime rate. I've read a LOT about Obama and his philosophy is strongly focused on opening doors for people, not carrying them though the doors. He'll strongly help people help themselves.

Just what has Obama done in the Senate, just how many bills has he introduced? Seriously I believe he has only introduced one bill as a Senator. And he's going to do what for you and this country?

Theres really not a LOT to research Obama on except he writes books when he should be working for the people who elected him...

Oh Obama will do a lot to go after crime in his OWN way by prodding his cronies down in the house for Gun Legislation, and anyone who thinks we need to mandate Anger Management courses for 5-12 year olds wont consider diving head first into Education?

Sorry but Obama is wanting to further erode incentive by producing a new class of welfare dependents. He wants to raise taxes to 39.9% hell only 53% of the country's taxpayers carry the tax burden of this country as it is. So much for life, liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, seem like there are a lot of individuals out there that want it to, only for free.

How much more blood do the do the leeches of America want (any American wanting a handout, 99.9% all politicians)

Have folks forgotten the concept of checks and balances in our government? I am so tired of hearing how any ONE president (either candidate at this point) will singlehandedly change things. The simple fact is that they are not able to, no matter how popular. Sure he can veto, and he can work with senate and congress towards a common goal(theoretically)but any presidential candidate that says "I will change (fill in the blank)" makes me a little nevous.

Do you really think that back in D.C. the newly elected president will sit down in the oval office and say to his staff "OK, first things first, the village of Huslia in Alaska needs an opportunity to get new ATV's how can we make this happen?"

jroosterdude: You've got it backwards about Obama not campaigning in Alaska. Check out an ADN article for the particulars: http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/story/447....

To summarize, Obama has a field office in Alaska and chose it as one of 18 states to run his first general election advertisements in. He's probably coming here in a month or so.

McCain's office replied by saying that Alaska is, "not in our top tier of target states," and that they don't plan on opening a campaign office here.

As far as Alaska coming into discussion, our borough mayor and a Republican, is giving a speech about why he's crossing party lines to vote for Obama and the Democratic Convention. Find out why he's voting Obama here: http://www.newsminer.com/news/2008/aug/1...

By comparison to many similar pieces lately, this is a very well written letter, perhaps you should send it to a few (dozen) Congressmen. Maybe there's even time to slip a bug in Jim Whitaker's ear before he goes to the big show.
Regardless of who lands in the White House, you can rest assured that they won't care about Huslia, Alaska. By your own admittance, your community offers nothing, not even to its own residents.

In the end, no one cares more about you, than you.

Do you think Obama is it! . This man is not who he seems to be ! . Don't listen to the Big 3 (main stream media) and look at what thay are not saying . Obama has some Issues he needs to address . The only thing I heared was Obama talking in circles and not realy saying anything. Take a look at who he has associated him self with in the past for years!. Now ask your self why is he against drilling for oil in are own country . Now look at those past associates . You know we are their biggest customer. and why is it he wants to whittle down the second amendment. Now look at those past associates. A passive eneny is an easy enemy to conquer. This man dosn't even say the pledge of alligance or put his hand on his heart and took the United States flag off of his campain jet and replaced it with his own symble . now look at those past associates. Obama is trying to alienate us from who we are listen to what he says I hear hollow words and flip-flop and double talk !.

    Maybe I missed something, but:

Since the United States purchased Alaska in 1867, how did the "Founding Fathers" have anything to do with "...the beautiful swap of our lands and way of life in Alaska..."?

    From Wiki:

In 1971, the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act was signed into law by the U.S. President, under which the Natives relinquished aboriginal claims to their lands. In return, they received access to 44 million acres (180,000 km²) of land and were paid $963 million. The land and money were divided among regional, urban, and village corporations.

Being part Native from the lower 48, looks to me like the Alaskan Native got the best deal of any of the Natives in this country. No slaughter carried out by the US Army, not one Death March, no wholesale uprooting and moving of Tribes.

As I've already stated I'm part Native myself, so Humbly speaking as such, Don't ever compare the struggle of the Alaskan native with the US Government with those Tribes in the lower 48. We fought and died for GENERATIONS. In the end they took darn near everything from us.

I feel your pain, but you and your generation need to be asking your Elders "What did you do to secure my future?".

And BTW, I've been to several Reservations that are the most beautiful places on earth. Are they all that nice? No, I've seen some real dumps to. The difference between the two that I have seen? Some tribes did the work to save their culture, and create a small piece of paradise, no matter what hurdle the US threw in their path. The others sat around whining about how they got the shaft and the Government is not doing enough to fix it for them.

The bottom line: Obama, McCain, nor any other canidate cares a bit about either you or me. They will claim they do, but unless your signing a $10k+ donation checks you are not ever on their radar. If you want to improve your lot in life, YOU must do it. Waiting for a "White Knight" from the Government has proven time and time again to be foolhardy.

Yes, they are of his own as he is the one who is sponsoring it, once his name is attached to that bill it's his. Whether or not one of his lackeys actually writes it is irrelevant. I'm not going to argue the semantics of how a bill is passed. I've shown proof that Obama has actually been quite busy in the Senate. Where's your proof or link to show otherwise?

Not sure how one man is going to change the government. One man against millions. Not going to say it could not (or hasn’t) happen but it will take more time then any president has. I think everyone is disappointment with politicians because they promise you the world and then you get disappointment when they cannot keep their word. This has been the way elections have been running for the last couple of decades that I know of. The politicians make promises before the elections, then when they get into office cannot (or don’t) keep their word. Then the people get tired of believing or hearing the same old thing. Then they think all politicians are the same. and the government is worthless. Until the next politician comes along. promising them more. It has become a vicious circle.

The big difference between Obama and McCain is, Obama has not promised anything. Just change (liberal change). How many times have we heard that the president is going to change the government? What are you going to say when Obama’s vision of the future runs into the fed. Government?

Hear that pounding on the wall? That is the next president (either one) beating his head against the wall and getting the same result as you would. A headache and the wall is still there and has not moved an inch.

Lets not worry about the high price of gasoline in Alaska, since according to Obama, all we have to do is to inflate our automobile's tires to save fuel. Lets just keep on adding air to the tires, this way no fuel will be needed in the tank.

Just kidding, folks! It does not matter who the next president will be. Both candidates are quite liberal, although MaCain is just slightly to the right of Obama, or between Obama and Hillary. Don't expect any president to take care of your local problems. In fact, the Native populations sitting on oil, or gold and other minerals, have the potential for becoming economic forces to contend with in Alaska.

Hmmm, Obama could "campaign" over in Europe but couldn't bother to make a trip to Alaska??? But, maybe he was going to make a stop over to visit his half brother living in Kenya - the one fathered by one of his father's other wives. When it comes to election time, promising hand outs is the easiest way to buy votes. And for the life of me, with all the native corporations bringing in millions of dollars due to military and other contracts courtesy of Ted Stevens - why have the villages not developed their own infrastructure. Many of these contracts are awarded NOT as low bid but via Stevens and all are quite successful. If I were a member of one of those corporations that is the hierachy I would be hounding for my money. [bringing in millions of dollars due to military and other contracts courtesy of Ted Stevens- why have the villages not developed their own infrastructure. Many of these contracts are awarded NOT as low bid but via Stevens and all are quite successful.]

Your saying it as if all Native corporations are successful. But depending on what region the village is in, their corporation might not be as fortunate as others.
There is a high demand for rural development workers and this is the very reason. What Ricko is simply pointing out is that there is no job oppurtunities or good education in his village.
Is he wrong for having an opinion about Barack Obama?
I think we, as in Americans, are being a bit overly critical on the presidential candidates because of how messed up things became after George W Bush was "voted" into office.
There seems to be more pressure on making the right decision because of how messed up things are already..... we dont want to make it worse.

    B. Hussein Obama is promising "CHANGE". I think that he is being honest; Yes MARXISM would be "CHANGE". However, I do not think that such "CHANGE" is what America really needs. And yes both B. Hussein Obama and John McCain ( who tried to run on the Democrat Presidential Ticket in 2004 ) are quite Socialist in many aspects of their basic thinking and proffered solutions. John McCain is, however, the slightly more conservative of the two. So as the lesser of two EVILS, John McCain is the only reasonably rational Presidential Candidate who stands a chance of winning. What a sorry state for The Republic. B. Hussein Obama is endorsed by Hamas, the same guys who are a terrorist organization who celebrated when the Saudi Arabian (and other islamic Country terrorists) flew the fully loaded American Jetliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. They want B. Hussein Obama to be President. When an avowed evil enemy of America wants a particular politician to win an election the American electorate had better educate itself very carefully and completely BEFORE casting a vote for what potentially may be the next Stalin.

This letter plum teed me off in so many areas I don't know where to begin.
1st and foremost - your free dental may be in Fairbanks, but at least you have the option. I am not given free dental and the last time I took my family in it was over 3,000 - and that was after what the insurance that I paid for paid their portion!
You also complain about the quality of your schooling - well, I have complained about the schooling in FNSBSD also. The way I see it if you don't like your schooling you have options. Homeschool your children. If you are not paying for it how can you really complain.
I pay property taxes (which are not cheap by the way) and I have to pay to send my child to a different school! Never mind the fact that 90% of my property taxes goes to schooling.

So, you are an Alaskan Native by what I can tell from your letter. My children were all born and raised in Alaska, making them "Native Alaskans". They do not get free healthcare, dental, schooling, land, no free passes!

If you don't like your circumstances it is 100% up to YOU to change them! But, I guarantee you, the grass is not any better in FNSB.

And, before you go saying I'm a Native basher - don't waste your time. I've been in Alaska since the 80's and I have many Native friends that I hold in high regard. But, if I heard any of this griping from them - I would let them have it too.
You need to get over the past and move on with YOUR future! Your ancestors may have suffered - mine did too...But, I do not get any gifts because of it.

Obama does not care about your people, and he really isn't going to make any difference. He is a politician and nothing more.

Ok I wont waste my time calling you a Native basher....
But I will waste my time saying that [My children were all born and raised in Alaska, making them "Native Alaskans". They do not get free healthcare, dental, schooling, land, no free passes!] is the most ridiculous statement I have ever read.

I say that out of the respect of the non-native children who get to go to C.A.I.H.C. and TCC Dental because of the fact that they dont have their real parents around and are in foster care. I am really glad that they get the same benefits.
Even though the waiting list is about 12 months just for a regular check-up at the "free dental".

And for you to have the nerve to say that your kids dont get free schooling is also a big laugh for me!
It is free for the most part(aside from school lunch, small fees for special school projects, etc) but you chose to send your kids to a different school for whatever your personal reasons may be.
So dont sit there and try to use that against anybody but yourself.
Dont whine about a cost that could actually be free for you, it just makes it look like you are trying too hard to make Natives look bad.

And do you really wanna go there when it comes to Natives getting "free land"?

How about the White men that came up here and sold the land like it was already their land? The land was taken from us in turn for crappy dental and health benefits that most people wouldn't even trust those docs & dentists on their own dogs.

If we want land we have to buy it, just like everyone else. Even though its not anyone's to sell!

I am a bit confused on why you believe you can sit there and complain about Natives getting free land.... If Natives are getting free land where can I get some? I would like to have free land.

    Please do enlighten me.

I swear it seems like everone on here gets their news from spam email. Do you at all research things on your own? I'm really curious as to how you people can actually believe the things you write.

Andrew, I was going to disagree with your post but then when I saw that you spellout out Obama's full name I was like, "WHOA OMG HE HAS THE SAME NAME AS SADDAM!!!!" And then suddenly your post made a lot more sense

    /sarcasm

Once again, as I've been saying over and over, had you done a little research you'd know that Hamas sees both canidates as the same (in that they both support Israel) and thus wishes that neither of them win.

""Obama’s comments have confirmed that there will be no change in the U.S. administration’s foreign policy on the Arab-Israeli conflict," Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters in Gaza.

"The Democratic and Republican parties support totally the Israeli occupation at the expense of the interests and rights of Arabs and Palestinians," he said. "Hamas does not differentiate between the two presidential candidates, Obama and McCain, because their policies regarding the Arab-Israel conflict are the same and are hostile to us, therefore we do have no preference and are not wishing for either of them to win."

    taken from: http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/...

I've read a lot about Obama too! I've read about everything he got done as a politician in Chicago where he voted "present" over 130 times.
I’ve read about how much he admires his mentor, Frank Marshall Davis, a member of the old Moscow-controlled Communist Party USA. I've read about the racist "hate speech" of Obama's friend & pastor, Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, giving a life time achievement award to Louis Farrakhan. I've read about his comments that over the dinner "conversations that had challenged his thinking" with Rashid Khalidi (member of the PLO). I've read about Obama's friends, William Ayers & Bernardine Dohrn, Weather Underground terrorists whose regret is that they "didn't plant more bombs".
I read about the three times Obama voted to deny medical care to babies who survive abortions.
I read about Obama authoring Senate bill S2433 which will cost more than $845 BILLION by mandating that the US give .7% of its GNP to the UN, open the door for the UN to tax the US, locks the US into United Nations Millennium Summit which requires us to "ban small arms and light weapons" (So what if the President swears to up hold the Constitution which includes the 2nd amendment?).
Yea, Obama's for Change alright. It sounds like he's planning to change a lot of things we're use to like sovereignty, civil rights, use of our own money. But that’s okay, he knows how to run our lives better than we do. Just close your eyes & feel the change.

Straight from the DSA (Democratic Socialist of Americas) webpage-

While recognizing the critical limitations of the Obama candidacy and the American political
system, DSA believes that the possible election of Senator Obama to the presidency in
November represents a potential opening for social and labor movements to generate the critical political momentum necessary to implement a progressive political agenda. We know that a proactive and progressive government can come only on the heels of a broad coalition for social justice united against a reactionary Republicanism as well as a Democratic neoliberalism. Such a movement will also have to fight for a public finance system that can limit the power of corporate fundraising and lobbyists over both major political parties. Thus, DSA offers its Economic Justice Agenda and its “four pillars” as a framework for such a progressive policy agenda. This program calls for:
    1. Restoring progressive taxation to the levels before the Reagan administration and
    enacting massive cuts in wasteful defense spending;
    2. Enacting single-payer universal health insurance and expanding public initiatives in child
    care, elder care and pension security;
    3. Passing the Employee Free Choice Act as part of a broader effort to rebuild a powerful
labor movement capable of achieving equity in the labor market; and
    4. Implementing a U.S. foreign policy that promotes global institutions that advance labor,
environmental, and human rights and regulate transnational corporations.
True democracy is not about one woman or man promising change for the American public. That takes consistent pressure from below. Who holds the presidency does matter, if only as a more accessible target for pressure. A Democratic presidency and Congress would also create popular expectations that rising inequality and injustice will be curbed. If the Democrats frustrate those hopes (as they did in the early 1960s), mass mobilization is likely to grow rather than subside. Nor should the Left be so involved in the national presidential campaign that it ignores the fall primaries and general election races for the U.S. House and Senate. We need more progressives in Congress as well as increased Democratic majorities

Crucible: According to 'www.govtrack.us' Barack Obama has SPONSORED 131 bills in the Senate. He has COSPONSORED 619 bills in the Senate.

He is just a small percentage above average in terms of quantity of legislation where he is the PRIMARY SPONSOR.

Incidentally, S2433, the Global Poverty Act, does not SAY ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT 0.7% OF THE US GDP! NOT A DAMN THING! The bill requires the President to implement a plan to increase the US commitment to reducing global extreme poverty, with the goal of reducing by half worldwide the number of people living on less than $1 per day.

That goal is part of the UN Millenium Development Goals, which has NOTHING TO DO WITH BANNING SMALL ARMS OR OTHER WEAPONS!

Who ever walks into office is going to be dealing with a huge mess that the last president instigated. So they will be so busy trying to deal with that, they won't even be able to look at native rights and other local issues. There are also 140 villages on the coast ready to fall into the ocean, so when it comes to dealing with Alaska, that's probably a higher priority than some of the issues Ricko bring up. I agree that we need to pay attention to our infrastructure, health care options and educate local people so they could have local careers. The way that these problems can be fixed is to look at each problem, see what your resources are available, such as people, local food, wood, etc, and use them creatively. Be careful to think one president can help with our problems. There may be a lot more problems on our horizon, than what we already have, so gotta get on it and not blame the far far past. We are going to have to work together. I sense a little bet of anger in some of the comments and also blame in the original letter. However, the original letter was well written and it exposes problems and struggles people are having; also look at how many comments it got. Some of them were angry and a waste of time to read. I'm sure many will think this is also.

I kept reading about how one President cannot singlehandedly change things. So is it easier to dig a hole then to climb a mountain. We need someone to get America out of the hole that Bush has dug. I believe Obama can do that. It doesn't surprise me how people responded to Ricko's letter, most of Alaska is stuck on voting republican, sad to say. I have to say that I am tired of republicans, Bush has messed so much up, Stevens and Young looking out for their investors. Of course I am not completely closed minded like so many. I have even grown to like our Govenor Palin. People should remember, yes politicians lie, but we need to give someone the benifit of a doubt, just remember DON'T VOTE THE IDIOT FOR A SECOND TERM IF HE DOES LIE. "T.Doval," are you kidding me?
You have the nerve to compare Candidate Obama with one of the greatest single-day mass murderers in our history?
How dare you equate Candidate Obama with the "Rev." Jim Jones and the 1978 Guyana Tragedy.
What a dumbass comment to make.
From what I see, Obama, hard-working, hard driving married family man, who, oh by the way, is making a strong bid to become President of the United States.
Jones, gives new meaning to the term "drinking the Kool-Aid," literally forcing almost ONE THOUSAND men, WOMEN AND CHILDREN to drink a cyanide-laced "beverage." (forced because those that refused were shot to death).
    They DIED "T. Doval."
Where is Candidate Obama in the same vicinity as this fool?
Are you entitled to your opinion?
    Yes you are.
Do I expect everyone to be accepting of the fact that Barack Obama just may have the word PRESIDENT put in front of his name in the coming months?
Of course not....although I must knock the folks having the nerve to call Obama supporters "gullible" after what American's have been through this past eight years.
My point is, if you're going to comment, talk what you know.
Comparing Obama with a psychopathic mass murderer who flew under the radar in the form of a "clergyman," is just plain wrong.
"ASS"-umption's made by one who only seemed to make an ASS of themself by even remotely having thoughts of a comparison, and then foolishly posting them for all to see.

Many years ago, Joe Vogler told my wife and me that The United States has to become communist-he said it is almost socialist now and the people will keep leaning that way and become communist. Then they will try to go back to the government that our founding Fathers envisioned. More and more I believe what he said. The people are whining and complaining about how tough they have it, yet I see almost everyone driving around in almost new cars, chattering on cell phones constantly, spending money on frivolities using their credit cards. In short living the life of Riley compared to the way things were 30 years ago. Here in NC (on vacation) the political ads are screaming about needing change and our jobs being exported overseas. I wonder why American jobs are going overseas, could it have anything to do with expensive enviromental regulations? Could it have anything to do with higher and higher wages for workers or more and more expensive benefits for them?
As for government health care...ever been treated by an Army doctor? That's what you will get. A few decent doctors but mostly quacks and that after being on a waiting list for months at a time.
Vote for Obama if you can't make your own way and want someone to take care of you. Just be careful, you may get what you ask for.

You say well he's only cosponsored a lot and only directly sponsored a few. You were shown to be wrong about that too. So now you're argument is that of the one's he's sponsored only a few get passed...

By now it's pretty clear you just plain don't like him and nothing anyone could ever say will change your mind, making debate with you on the subject pointless.
