Juneau Assembly mulls proposal for bronze sculpture of whale
Published Monday, August 25, 2008
JUNEAU -- The Juneau Assembly is set to review a proposal for a $500,000 bronze whale sculpture that would be located downtown.
The sculpture is estimated to cost $1.2 million, a price tag that does not include the cost of the land and site preparation.
City Manager Rod Swope says estimates of a final cost have come in at $2.7 million.
The proposed funding would be made available to the Whale Committee, a group of citizens that has formed to raise funds for construction of the sculpture.
The money would be a source for matching grants and used to start the bronze sculpting and casting process.

You have got to be kidding?! A community that was devestated by a snow slide and crippled by electrical shortages, wants to spend over a million on ART? Talk about stupid spending practices. An absolutely dumb idea in the face of crippling fuel prices. I'm sure there are much more worthy expenditures available.
