ANCHORAGE -- The Matanuska Maid dairy in Anchorage will likely be turned into a heated self-storage facility now that the state has received a minimum bid for the plant.
Matt Bobich of Anchorage submitted the sole $1.5 million bid this week to buy the Anchorage facility. The amount was the minimum amount required by the state.
Bobich, who along with his wife, Linda, owns four self storage facilities, has until Oct. 20 to close the deal.
Although the state dairy profited for several years, its directors shut it down in December because of mounting losses, including $1 million in its last year.
Mat Maid started as a dairy cooperative in the 1930s in Palmer. It was taken over by the state in the mid-1980s after its private owner went bankrupt.
The state intends to sell the company's bottle-making facility in Palmer. The state Board of Agriculture plans to address that issue at its next meeting on Sept. 4.
