Aug. 20, 1998 — An Alaskaland security guard was charged Wednesday with stealing $10,000 in cash and checks from the tourist attraction in June.

Timothy Rogers, 28, admitted to police that he took the bank deposit bag on June 19, Fairbanks Police Detective Aaron Ring said.

Rogers said he spent $1,700 in cash on his family and also used some of the money to finance a trip to a softball tournament in Wasilla, according to Ring. Rogers showed police where he stashed the bag, and they were able to recover the outstanding checks.

Aug. 20, 1983 — Modules taller than most buildings in downtown Fairbanks rest on barges afloat in the Beaufort Sea. On the far horizon is a white band, the Arctic pack ice, which has temporarily receded from shoreline.

Crews are working nonstop to dock and unload the 26 barges that arrived Wednesday morning at Prudhoe Bay’s West Dock.

In a few weeks, the polar ice will move back toward shore, freezing and stopping all ocean traffic until next summer.

Aug. 20, 1958 — The promotion of better community relations between the military and civilian residents of Alaska was recently furthered through the election of the first military man to an elective office of the Alaskan Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Sgt. Dave Hill, 5060th Transportation Sqdn., was the elected vice president of the Alaskan Jaycees at its convention at Ketchikan in May. The election of Hill marked a milestone in the Alaskan Jaycees’ history.

Aug. 20, 1933 — The following letter was received by the News-Miner on the last mail from Stanley Baker, 15 New Street, Atlantic City, N.J.:

“In my class, we are studying aviation. In commemoration of Wiley Post, who flew around the world alone, we have taken the money from our class treasury and purchased four gold colored frames (size 8x10) and had the words ‘Wiley Post’ engraved on each frame. In smaller letters the words ‘Courtesy of the Fairbanks News-Miner’ were also engraved on the frames.
