FAIRBANKS — Virgil Sharpton, University of Alaska Fairbanks vice chancellor for research, is one of three new members of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission.
The commission is responsible for developing an integrated national Arctic research policy and assists in a national Arctic research program by working with federal, state and local governments and other nations.
Sharpton sets the research agenda at UAF and oversees the Center for Research Services, the Geophysical Institute, International Arctic Research Center, Office of Electronic Miniaturization, Institute of Arctic Biology and various other research programs.
Sharpton arrived at UAF in 1998 with a joint appointment at the GI and the Department of Geology and Geophysics.

Congratulations to Buck Sharpton and UAF. However, the FDN erred when it stated that Sharpton "sets the research agenda at UAF." Faculty, at least, set their own research agendas, within their disciplinary boundaries. Sharpton's various offices have some control over the research that is conducted at UAF, but he cannot be said to "set the agenda."
glow is right. Fortunately, UAF's academic and research faculty are independent of Dr. Sharpton's "research agenda". He is a geologist engaged in remote sensing. This means that he is a layman for most of UAF's research fields.
