Beef recalled from Alaska Fred Meyer stores

Published Wednesday, August 13, 2008

FAIRBANKS -- Ground beef by the supplier responsible for making people sick in 12 states and Canada has been pulled off the shelves in Alaska Fred Meyer stores, the state Department of Environmental Conservation announced Wednesday.

The beef may be tainted with E. coli, a deadly bacterium characterized by dehydration and bloody diarrhea, the announcement said.

No one in Alaska has reported an illness, nor have Fred Meyer customers nationwide, according to the DEC, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and company spokeswoman Melinda Merrill.

Customers of Fred Meyer’s parent company, Kroger, have reportedly become ill from tainted beef this summer.

Nebraska Beef Ltd. in Omaha announced the recall of 1.2 million pounds of beef on Friday, according to the federal government. That followed recalls on June 30 and July 3.

Merrill said Fred Meyer removed the beef from its shelves over the weekend. Shoppers are asked to check their refrigerators and freezers for the potentially tainted meat.

“They need to either throw it away or they can bring it back to the store for a refund,” Merrill said.

Among the beef products flagged is the family pack of lean ground beef with a sell-by date between July 6 and Aug. 11, Merrill said.

“It has several pounds in it and it usually has a blue sticker that says family pack on it ,” the spokeswoman said.

Also, ground beef packaged in Styrofoam trays and wrapped in cellophane with a sell-by date between May 21 and July 5 should be thrown away or returned to the store, the DEC statement said.

Beef with the “Private Selection Natural Ground Beef” label in 16 ounce packages with sell-by dates between July 11 and July 21 has also been flagged.

Ground beef purchased at a Fred Meyer meat counter should be equally scrutinized, according to the DEC.

Anyone who has recently eaten beef and experiences E. coli symptoms should call their doctor, the agency advised.
