FAIRBANKS -- The state has opened disaster-assistance centers in Fairbanks, Nenana and Salcha to help those communities cope with fallout from flooding that rose to disaster levels in late July and early August.
The centers’ staffs are distributing information about assistance agencies and are helping residents apply for state-offered individual-assistance grants, which can be used to cover property damages.
“The response effort has concluded, and now we are in the recovery process,” said John Madden, who directs the state’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, in a news release. “There are many individuals and families who sustained damages to their homes. The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management will work with all available partners to ensure that the recovery phase is as swift and well coordinated as the response effort.”
More than 100 people have applied for individual assistance through the state following the disaster, the management division reported Wednesday. The state had offered temporary housing to 10 people as of Wednesday afternoon.
The state’s Nenana office is located at that city’s teen recreation center on Third Street. The Fairbanks center is located at 326 Driveway St. behind the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner building. The Salcha center is within that town’s senior center on Johnson Road.
The state has encouraged those looking to apply for disaster assistance by phone to call its hotline, 800-921-3682.
Fairbanks North Star Borough officials, who led disaster response until the state assumed responsibility early this month, has also asked people whose homes and property were hit by the floods to document and photograph the damage. The borough is also providing its Assessing Department to help the state tally the damage done by the flood, an assessment that project borough spokesperson Sallie Stuvek indicated could be wrapped up by the end of the week.
The deadline to apply for state disaster-assistance grants is Oct. 3.

Okay Snooze-Minus, Salcha is NOT a town; there is no corporated area like down at Kenny Lake. Salcha is a roadside community.
For my fellow Salchans, the disaster folks have not done a good job letting you know, but the folks who are handing out applications will be there at the Senior Center from Aug 13 to Aug 20, 10 am to 7 pm.
Please inform your non-Internet owning neighbors.
ALSO, Social Services will be there. If you lost food to the flood, be it contaminated or spoiled, they are handing out food vouchers.
A lot of folks won't be asking for aid, but at least they can replaced their larders if destroyed.
The phone number at the Senior Center is 488-1606.
