History Day winners announced

Twenty local students were recognized at the state History Day competition. The projects are now eligible for the nation competition taking place June 15-19 at the University of Maryland.

New Randy Smith principal selected

Sandy Kowalski will replace Randy Smith Middle School principal Jim Currie at the end of the school year.

Kowalski has been in education for 18 years. She has taught at Kotzbue Middle/High School, was principal at June Nelson Elementary School in Kotzebue and was director of an Inupiaq language immersion school and director of state and federal programs for the Northwest Arctic Borough District.

In Fairbanks, she has taught at Effie Kokrine Charter School. She is currently completing her superintendent’s endorsement from the University of Alaska Anchorage and is a secondary administration intern at Lathrop High School.

UAF scholarship available

Latinos Unidos del Norte is seeking applicants for two scholarships to the University of Alaska for the 2008-09 academic year.

The scholarship includes a one-year tuition waiver and $1,000 toward educational expenses.

The group is looking for a college freshman who graduated from any Fairbanks North Star Borough School District high school and a continuing student at any UA campus.

Applications and more information are available by contacting the UAF Office of Multicultural Affairs at 474-7300. The deadline is April 18.

Hunter teacher wins grant

Linda Mason, a music teacher at Hunter Elementary, has won an Arts Educator Award Grant from the Alaska State Council on the Arts in partnership with the Rasmuson Foundation.

The grants are up to $3,000 and designated for travel to workshops and to assist in the creation of the teacher’s personal art during the summer.
