Mistake allows Fairbanks inmate to leave jail

Stumble It!A man who eluded authorities for more than a month was accidentally released from the Fairbanks Correctional Center on Wednesday.
Kennith Lacrete Leonard Brasket, 22, last known address Nulato, was being held on charges of assault, theft, vehicle theft and violating conditions release when a paperwork mistake allowed him to leave the facility. He is not yet in custody and authorities consider him a fugitive.
Brasket was arraigned in front of a Galena magistrate in late February and ordered not to return to the western Alaskan city of about 700 people until his trial date. Galena police took him into custody April 1 when he showed up at the Galena Airport, and he was taken to the correctional center.
Paperwork faxed from Galena on Wednesday requested a lower bail for Brasket, but because the forms were slightly different than the ones used in Fairbanks, authorities at the jail thought the forms allowed them to release Brasket on his own recognizance, said Richard Schmitz, a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Corrections.
Between 38,000 and 39,000 people are booked in Alaska jails every year, and about five are accidentally released early.
“It does happen every once in a while, but it’s very infrequent,” Schmitz said.”
He could not comment on any disciplinary action that might be taken against authorities in Fairbanks.
Galena Police Chief John Millan expressed frustration with the premature release, but understands it was an isolated incident.
“Mistakes happen and we learn from them,” he said.
Millan said he believes Brasket might be on his way to the Anchorage area. He advised that Brasket should not be approached and should be dealt with cautiously.
Brasket is described as a slender, muscular Native, 6 feet, 2 inches and 185 pounds. He has brown eyes and short brown hair that is usually well-groomed. Anyone with information on is whereabouts his asked to contact their local police department, Alaska State Troopers or the Fairbanks Correctional Center at 458-6700.

Although it's very infrequent, it's still an example of how the justice system fails!
Hmmm. If about five prisoners are unintentionally released early each year, one has to wonder if "Mistakes happen and we learn from them." It give reason to question the "learn from them" part.
Only 5 a year? Drug users, thieves, child molesters, rapists, murderers? Which 5? Maybe one from each category so as to be fair? Why are we only hearing about this for the first time?
How can they consider him a fugitive when they released him??
It's a case of cover your butt, "paperwork is slightly different"
If the Galena court had sent paperwork lowering the persons bail amount, that amount would appear on the paperwork. They got in a rush and overlooked it.
They should put some control measure in place to ensure this doesnt happen in the future.
They can consider him a fugitive because he appeared before the judge for the bail reduction. He is then aware of the new bail amount and any other conditions for release at that time.
When he is released without meeting the conditions that the judge had just talked to him about, he knows its improper.
Because someone makes a mistake on your paperwork that doesnt negate your charges, or conditions of release... It doesnt then go away because someone made a error on paperwork.
Under the same conditions if someone made the same mistake on my paperwork and I was released I would GOOOOOOO. Its not my fault for there mistake. When or if im ever caught I couldnt be punished for it. They released me!!! Where's the party?

I know people they have done that to and i'm one of them.
It just goes to show you how well you can depend on our law enforcement. Mistakes like this shouldn't happen, however human error allows it too. I agree with Birdie_Abromovich, which five get released? Has anyone ever actaully looked on the website: www.watchdog.com. It makes you scared to death to realize they are that many child molesters and sexual assult abusers living around you. And are allowed to continue living a normal life around your loved ones. I think they should have to wear a sign that says "Hey I sexually assult children." They are sicko's and need far more then just to have to register as a sex offender. And thanks to our wonderful Judicial system we allow these dirt bags back out in our neighborhood so they can stalk their next victum....

Wouldnt be hard to find him, if you asked the people who are aquainted with him. But its not only that easy. Friends lie for each other out of protection.
Great mistake! How about we accidently throw all of our politrickal leaders into prison, that would be an even better mistake.
