FAIRBANKS – IMAX made its first appearance in Alaska in Anchorage. Now it has spread to Fairbanks, and it’s attracting people in droves. The popularity of IMAX has grown and the new screen at the Regal Goldstream Stadium 16 is ready to pull viewers into the movie experience.

The IMAX addition to Fairbanks has been in the works for months. Regal Cinemas had been looking for locations to add the feature, and Fairbanks fit the criteria being a location that could support IMAX. This judgment is supported by the sold-out lines at the Regal Goldstream since IMAX became available Tuesday.

Ticket prices for the IMAX are $17.25 for adults and $14.25 for children compared to regular adult ticket prices of $11.25 and $7.75 for children.

Whether the price equals the value of the movie is up to the customer, said Robbie Arrington, the marketing manager for Regal Cinemas. “It’s all about the experience of the movie, feeling in the movie; people need to experience that for themselves.”

The difference in the experience comes from IMAX’s screen, presentation and sound quality. The screen is curved, and the movie is projected beyond the edges of the screen to make it appear as if the movie surrounds the viewer. This allows for more depth in the picture, Arrington said. Additionally, the sound is digitally tuned specifically for the building. Every seat in the auditorium gets tested for sound quality.

Liberal? Really? Does everything have to boil down to politics? I just think people want to get their money's worth when they spend $100 at a movie theater. The most basic thing you could ask for is the facility to be somewhat clean. We just feel we are getting jipped a little here. Yeah we don't have to go no one is forcing us, but it's the only theater in Fairbanks for crying out loud! What this is really about is the owners and the management of the facility. It's called pride of ownership. There isn't much. I can just assume that it comes from the top down. The owner and manager are probably comfortable and don't do much more to contribute to the business than what's required to make earnings. Simple. If the owner or manager is reading; Take a little pride, walk around the place, talk to the customers, the minimum wage employess, take a bathroom break and see what you come up with. Have a little vision, if you will.

Solution to avoid using messy bathrooms:

Either hold until it the show is over, or wear disposible Depends diapers.

Problem solved.

What kind of people can even think about boycotting the theatre because a bathroom is messy? Why act like a bunch of spoiled liberals who can only complain and create problems rather than do something helpful? I've gone to Goldstream for years and usually the bathrooms are clean when the theatre opens. Then some disrespectful and irresponsible idiots, without any concern about the people who come in after them and leave messes behind. It's about being responsible! Use some common sense and respect --PEOPLE!!! CLEAN UP YOUR MESSES!!!

As for the complainers, my recommendation is if you find a bathroom in a mess go speak to the management. And, in case you didn't know it, kindness will actually get you a lot more cooperation and prompt action than bitching.

Too bad they didn't create a separate movie theater with the IMAX addition to create competition for Goldstream Cinemas. Yes, the bathrooms at there are dreadful and I can't imagine how bad the employee restrooms are, especially when they handle your food. On the subject of bad bathrooms and overpriced parasites, Pikes Landing is just plain awful. After being overcharged for toddler portions and the "Great Alaskan Platter" (more like the Great Alaskan Handful), I made a quick trip to the ladies room to discover a toilet covered in dried vomit. Droplets of the vomit were smudged down the front of the toilet and on the floor. The lady in the stall beside me sounded like she had diarrhea. Buyer beware, Pikes is a putrid pick.

I love that we now have an IMAX. The screen is huge and the picture is amazingly clear. I loved that the sound could be really loud but never ear piercing. The seats are much more roomy and comfortable as well. The price is high at over $17 but I found it to be worth it for what I got.

As far as the rediculous snack and soda prices go... I boycott that as often as possible. I hate that they charge so much for tiny portions and horrible food :(

Bathrooms....don't even get me started! Yuck!!!

Soo if you can eat before hand..and some how wait to go to the bathroom somewhere else.. Going to see a movie in IMAX is totally worth it in my opinion :)

8 years ago when I was on the sihgle scene it cost $25 for a movie date. (providing 2 sodas & large popcorn was enough) By the way, there is no dairy on that butter they put on your theater popcorn. But this price is rediculas. It is best to rent the movies or go to amazon.com

LOL, wow. You'd think IMAX was owned by "liberals" the way a few people are impotently whining about it.

"sold-out lines at the Regal Goldstream since IMAX became available Tuesday."

Yeah, uhh. So, good luck with that "boycott", lol...

(I don't think any of you would be satisfied with any theater in the country if y'all think Goldstream is really that bad, I've been in bigger towns with much worse.)

I agree with Deliverance-

The bathrooms at the Goldstream Theater are a DISGRACE!

I would love to see EVERYONE in Fairbanks commit to boycotting the Goldstream for one week, (heck, even one day....)sending the following message to the management: "IF YOU'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO GOUGE US WITH $5.00 SODAS AND $10.00 POPCORN, THE LEAST YOU CAN DO IS ASSIGN ONE EMPLOYEE TO EACH BATHROOOM TO CONTINUOUSLY CLEAN!"

It's so bad that I've seriously considered bringing disposable shopping bags with me just for something to put over my shoes in the event that I've had to walk into one of these standing urinals....

Every IMAX I've been in has been very steep so you only saw the HUGE screen in front of you and not the person in the row in front of you. The screens are much much taller than normal too. Is ours the same?

It all boils down to this, when is enough enough?

Just because they did a slight remodel of one theater isn't going to change the fact that it's the same old overpriced dump with sticky floors and filthy bathrooms where anything left in your car is guaranteed to be gone by the time you get out.

And now it's going to cost $17.25?? I can't imagine it being much of a draw once the novelty wears off. But then again, one should never underestimate the stupidity of the hive mind.

My daughter and I saw "Eclipse" on the new IMAX screen. The seats and flooring are new, but the screen just appeared to be slightly larger than usual. The speakers mounted at the rear corners of the theater helped to project the sound forward, but neither one of us were impressed with the IMAX experience. It's just a larger screen and the seats are the ones the Gold Stream should have given Fairbanks 20 years ago when the theaters outside got them. Save your money Fairbanks.
