They will finish their course work in Fairbanks by December. They have nothing against Anchorage or a UAA graduation ceremony, but they would love to have a local event because 13 of them live here.
The students, who range in age from 20 to 58, are hosting a garage sale today and Saturday in Shannon Park to raise money for a graduation gathering at the end of the year.
Sounds like a great idea to me. Most of the students were either raised here or they are raising their kids here.
The garage sale is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Saturday at 384 Cindy Drive.
If you can’t make the garage sale, they have opened an account at the MAC Federal Credit Union under the names of two of the students, Katie Johnson and Tanya Pepper.
Barbara Berl, another of the students, said they are raising funds now because as soon as the final semester starts in August they will be too busy with school work.
The other future nurses are Courtney Amundson, Nickol Dameron, Jennifer Dolan, Jill Drushal, Sarah Ellis, Amber Gross, Martha Hirt, Rachel John, Chris Johnson, Scott Sochocki, Janet Towler and Daniella Vasquez.
“We are united in our determination to serve the Fairbanks community as excellent nurses,” they stated in a fundraising letter.

VICKIE’S TEAM: Another important garage sale for a larger purpose is today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1740 Cottonwood St., which is off Aurora Drive close to the fairgrounds.
The sale will continue Saturday from 8 a.m. to
3 p.m. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society in the name of Vickie’s Team.
The group is named after the late Vickie Karns, a longtime nurse, mother of three and a member of two wonderful Fairbanks families who is fondly remembered. Friends and family members join her team every year to raise money for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
The garage sale includes the usual assortment of merchandise, along with such items as a tandem bike, a bike and trailer, a couch and a Bowflex exercise machine.

RETIREMENT: Friends and former students of Weller teacher Stephanie Rudig plan to gather Saturday at Pioneer Park to wish her a happy retirement. The barbecue and potluck is from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Wilderness Pavilion.
Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided, but they would like to know how many people plan to drop by. RSVP to Sue Sisson at 457-3840 or 388-9687.
She once said that she tried other jobs, but she didn’t love them as much as teaching.
“I can research the interesting and exciting new ideas as part of my job. I can study art, mathematics, science, literature, etc., and get paid for it. My mother was a teacher, so I learned how to learn early. I like to teach my students to learn how to learn.”
With her guidance, many children have learned how to learn.

MISSING PHONE: Jim and Tina Tompkins attended the North Pole High School graduation to witness their granddaughter’s graduation. The happy occasion turned a bit sour after they got home and realized Jim had lost his brand new iPhone.
Call her at 378-0693 or Jim at 378-2806 if the iPhone turns up.
