With the Midnight Sun Swim Team leading the way, local swimmers turned in several record-setting performances during the Great Alaskan Open swim meet late last month at Hamme Pool.
The Midnight Sun Swim Team, under the guidance of coach Gary Crowe, captured the overall team title, finished second in the women’s team standings and took first place in the men’s team standings during the three-day meet at Hamme Meet.
Lathrop High School standout Keegan Severns of the Midnight Sun Swim team won the high point award for the boys and MSST’s Shelby Perkins of North Pole High School took third in the girls high point competition.
High points are the cumulative points from the meet.
The Stingray Swim Team finished fifth overall and the North Pole Aquatic Club was 10th. Swimmers from 13 teams throughout the state scored points during the event.
Midnight Sun won the event with 957 points. The Aurora Swim Team of Anchorage was second with 916 and the Northern Lights Swim Club of Anchorage took third with 733. The Stingray Swim Team amassed 334 points and NPAC garnered 33.
Aurora won the girls division with 469 points and Midnight Sun was second with 426. The Midnight Sun boys picked up 531 points, while Aurora captured second with 447.
Since the meet is held every four years and features swimmers of all ages competing against each other, numerous state and age-group records were set during the competition.

• Justice Kramer: One of three 12-year-olds in the meet, Kramer’s placed 12th in the 200 freestyle and seventh in the 400 freestyle, breaking the state age-group record in both events. The previous 400 freestyle record was held by NPAC alum Scott Woster.
• Kaitlin Pendleton: Swam personal best times in the consolation finals of the 200 breaststroke and 400 IM.
