FAIRBANKS — The Arctic Bears of Fairbanks concluded the girls high school hockey season on a winning note Saturday afternoon, defeating the Mat-Su Ravens, 4-1.

The Mat-Su Ravens won the first two games of the series at the Curtis Menard Sports Complex in Wasilla by 3-1 and 3-2 margins.

“Today, the girls played up to their potential,” Arctic Bears coach Scott Vockeroth said. “Everyone was working hard and we used our speed to generate some offense.”

The Arctic Bears finished the season with a 10-7-1 record. There is no state tournament in girls high school hockey.

“It’s unfortunate because a lot of people think we have the best team in the state when we play up to our potential,” Vockeroth said. “It’s very frustrating.

“Women’s hockey is a rapidly growing sport, and it shouldn’t take much longer before we have more teams and a state championship,” he added.

Zoe Kurth and Janel Winters each had two goals and an assist to set the tone for the Arctic Bears in Saturday’s season finale. Elle Kadel, Erika Bloom and Kate Burns added assists.

Goaltender Stephanie Bluekens registered 18 saves to get the win. The Arctic Bears had 38 shots on goal.

Bloom scored the lone goal in the first game of the series off assists for Keegan Thompson and Keri-Lyn Fitzgerald.

“We didn’t have our legs after the van ride down here and Mat-Su took advantage of the situation and outworked us,” Vockeroth said.

Bluekens made 13 saves in the two-goal loss.

Kurth had a goal and an assist in Friday’s one-goal loss. Burns accounted for the other goal and Kadel also had an assist. Annie Vohden made eight saves.
