FAIRBANKS — West Valley High School was briefly put in lockdown Monday afternoon after two firearms were found in a student’s car.

Administrators searched the 17-year-old student’s car about 1:30 p.m. after receiving information from another student about the location of the guns.

A rifle, a pistol and ammunition were found in the vehicle. The guns were not loaded at the time. The student had left the guns in the car after going shooting during the weekend.

“Students weren’t in any danger,” said Bill Bailey, spokesman for the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. “It was helpful that a student shared the information with school officials.”

During the brief lockdown, students were kept in classrooms while teachers took roll.

A charge of misdemeanor weapons misconduct is pending against the 17-year-old, according to troopers. His name was not released because of his age.

Under school district policy, students who possess firearms on school property are subject to expulsion.

well now that we've heard from the majority of the "team"

now to voice how I a west valley student feel about this so called "team". They are a gang! Sure you parents can try and defend your children and saying oh they're so good and innocent.....GET REAL! Even my underclassmen years I was gang affiliated and even I could act like the perfect kid if you would like to beleive it or not this is a gang who likes to fight WHEN they have 100% chance to win and fight as a pack or gang. With this said if someone got expelled for having a gun with them last year why should this case be any different? And as for the hockey team / so called others that bully you, grow up you can try to act as saintly as you want but you instigated the entire thing and when it boiled up and came to confrontation you backed down and decided to take it out of a certain someones vehicle by stripping out a select objects from the vehicles interior, now we have both sides no problem with the group personally besides the fact they are as innocent as you folks make them out to be I even witnessed a myspace page bashing 3 individuals and one who had never had any altercations with this team tits but needless to say as soon as this individual saw he was being attacked he made it his fight.

I 100% agree with TT_looscannon. As a part of the group of friends not "gang" I can honestly say that you people really have no idea about what really is fact and fiction. Were just a group of friends that have a good time. There will always be people in high school that dont like each other, thats how high school is! The gun was totally non related, and was really an honest mistake. Im not just saying this because he is my friend but because kids make mistakes.

ak907!-- I would like to know what fights that you were there to witness? If there has been so many fights then you can easily state the ones you have watched. And I was also there at the BIRTHDAY PARTY and I happen to be a girl. Who did not fight BECAUSE I choose not to. By the way there was not one person there that had anything to drink, it was at 5:00pm for crying out loud! And there were adults present! There is no such think as a fight club going on, plain and simple.

The real thing everyone should be worried about is the kids that started saying all of the lies. There the real ones everyone should be talking about. They just dont want to get in trouble for what they did so they started telling lies to make them seem like the victim, which they are not.

If there is anything more facts to gets straight just ask them, and stop adding fuel to the fire by stating lies.

Well ak907! i am a member of team tits racing and i was there at the birthday party where there was a so called girls fight club and whoever you get your resources from they are poorly informed not just girls where boxing so where the guys and there was adults there and we were taking extreme caution not to hurt each other if maybe you were not informed boxing IS a sport just like baseball or hockey and i don't know if your being sexists or what but im pretty sure they allow girls to box to. And yes i have been in fights before big deal that doesn't make us a gang you people don't know what a gang is and to

LUVMYAK your daughter is a complete idiot for telling you there are gangs at west valley and hutch one being team tits maybe ask some of the other students and get the full story about us Then you spoke to the Principal of west valley to who which my parents are now going to visit because he is slandering my name by accusing me of being in a "gang" When her own son was at taco bell threatening to beat us with his hockey sticks (Maybe we shouldn't allow hockey sticks to be brought to school they could be used as a weapon)

i would like to know what you consider to be a gang Maybe if the school district was wanting to watch out for the safety of there students they would crack down a little less on a group of motor heads who are loud and like to have fun and maybe do something productive like deal with the drug problems at school or keep the hockey team from west valley under control and not TRY to bully other students from different schools and many people in this community know us and will gladly tell you we are the most respectable young adults that they have met in a long time.

So yes the student who brought the guns to school is my friend but expulsion in my opinion is a bit over the top it accomplishes nothing he is not a threat to anyone all it does is give another student in the district a set back so he has more of a chance of dropping out so please take this into consideration

And if you have any questions about team tits ask and i will answer them to my fullest ability with complete honestly but right now i would like to ask you all to please refrain from the term "Gang" because again you don't know what a gang is.

The only thing team tits is beating up is the competition in their snow machining area. other than that, they all like to get high on life. Im not apart there "GANG" but they are so awesome. They washed my car before snowfall, and they help old people, and donate blood, help out at the soup kitchen, and even pick up the drunk hobos in fox and give them rides to the nearest bar on their snow machines.

SO... Law Broken for having too big of a Heart <3

Im also a proud parent of the Team Tits boys. These are all good boys and in my eyes they kick @ss. In response to the comment by AK907!, these boys are not a gang in any way, shape, or form and the commenter needs to get there facts straight before they go bad mouthing the boys. In response to the "Girls fight club", all people who were participating were monitered by adults and had safety gear, as well as were playing around all in good fun and at there own will. NONE and i repeat NONE of the people at the BIRTHDAY PARTY were drinking at all.

ACTUALLY, proud parent, I can personally attest that most of the boys in team tits have been in a fight, having been there to witness it. They pride themselves in that capability, and while this gun incedent is just the tip of a non-threatening iceburg, the girls fight club is a real, and dangerous thing. No, they were not using pretective gear, and yes most were drunk. Don't believe me? There's footage of it posted on youtube, and various photos, probally on your sons myspaces. Team tits can in fact be considered a gang: they have clothing associating with the group, they've gotten into multiple fights in the name of team tits, and they threaten anyone who dosn't think they are as 'cool' as they say. If they let this gun thing slide, things are just going to get worse, because it's virtually giving them a 'win'. If you support this kid, than you basically support everything that they do as a whole. Don't let this slide past you, or we're going to hear many more reprocussions of them in the news.

I was at this so called fight club on Saturday. It was a birthday party and there were sveral adults there as well as my 4,6,and 8 yr. old kids who at different times in the evening also had the boxing gloves on. This occasion was a matter of a group of teenagers hanging out taking turns boxing each other which was all in fun. To call this anything other than kids being kids is B.S.

As far as the guns they are not weapons til they are used as weapons, being that they were in a locked car I do not see them as a threat. I know that most of these kids ( young men ) are the outdoors type and are not troublemakers, they have always been very respectful to me and my family.

Zero tolerance for guns on school district property without regard for the circumstances?

How about zero tolerance for school district administrators who drink and drive?

How's that sound Dave?

This is America. Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"?

Or is this now Amerika?

Wow the fearful ones are out. Mostly the females uneducated on firearms and the weaker of the species. Those that actually need them most. In the late 70's I could actually take a rifle to school on the bus. I suppose the nanny state has made this illegal these days. Unless this is proven gang related or something else all charges should be dropped and the student not harassed any longer. And to those that think we should not carry in school zones you may be surprised. I hope your next crisis is stopped by one that does.

MANY OF YOU SHOULD BE SUSPENDED TODAY!!!!!

Based on your comments, some of you would have and should have faced detention or expulsion today too! Why? Based on the District's policy, some of you are (documented to boot) guilty of on-line Bullying a minor - a kid who is probably pretty stressed out tonight! Not to mention the stupid example you are setting for all of the other student's who are lurking here to find out more. So, stop talking about those things that you weren't a witness to. Why don't we start talking about constructive ways we can help our local student body and our community?!

Here is the policy:

Part of the school district's policy states: "Signs shall be posted around school zones giving warning of the prohibition of the

possession and/or discharge of firearms, and the possession of weapons on school

property."

http://www.k12northstar.org/sites/default/files/Policy_13.pdf

With that said, I can honestly say I don't remember seeing that sign in my many visits to the schools. I know I've seen the laughable "drug-free" signs near at least one local school.

What do you think about this signage reminder? I think a big picture of a gun and a red x might remind some of us to head back home before heading onto school property.

First of all, TEAM TITS IS NOT A GANG ANYMORE THAN THE BOYSCOUTS ARE. We are proud parents of two of the Team Tits Racing members. Let me be the first to tell you that all these kids are wonderful, talented, drug free, outgoing people. Some are honor students, and all of them have jobs in the very community that you live in, if you were broke down along the road they would be the first to stop and help you out. This "gun" incident, it was not intentional nor was it meant to do harm. It was simply a young man that is an avid hunter and fisherman, just like our kids, and left them in the vehicle by accident from bird hunting over the weekend. I think you all need to get facts before jumping to conclusions and being so judgemental. And fight club? WOW!! It was a birthday party Sat evening at a house, with a huge shop, and the boys were boxing each other! Not FIGHTING They wore protective gear, and they were all boxing at their own free will. There were many adults there and they sang happy birthday together about 30 minutes later. Again, you need TO GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT! There is no "fight club". LOL!!! As for the "fighting" incident that someone brought up,that occurred at fred meyers, Bet you didn't know that the PRINCIPAL of west valley, her son was involved in that fight. I guess he is in a gang too. LOL!!! Dangerous !! Boys will be boys, laws will be laws, things get forgotten, and life goes on.

This is a good reminder to all of us to keep track of our guns. I am a parent. I am scared of guns, but I'm glad we can still own, fire, and carry them in such a relaxed manner here in Alaska. With that said, it is easy to "forget" about them in the course of the day's travel.

Have any of you "accidently" had a gun in your car when you picked up or dropped off a child at school? Did it even register that this was a bad thing for you to do?

Have any of you ever "forgotten" about your gun when you cut through Ryan/Lathrop's campuses, or Hutch and WVHS access roads? You would have technically been on "school property"! Who owns said property? I think UAF owns most of it (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Here is another question for any of you who might be able to provide some accurate information...

Is it illegal to have a gun on your person or vehicle when on UAF's campus proper or road systems? I honestly never thought about it before and would like to know.

Finally, leave this kid alone. We all know about it now, and the rest is between the authorities, the family and the boy to deal with. He doesn't need any more gossip, speculation or fuel to feed this fire!

This boy made a mistake, but he is a good kid, and so are his friends. They are not a gang, they are just a bunch of high school boys who like to ride snow machines. They are no different than most Alaskan boys who have grown up in our town. This boy made a mistake, but he doesn't have a malicious bone in his body. Comparisons of this event to Columbine are beyond ridiculous. To say these kids were planning to fight kids from another school is uninformed. I don’t think any of these kids have ever been in a fight in their lives. When a person makes a mistake, he is responsible for his actions, but we need to keep things in perspective and let the punishment fit the crime. He is a good kid, who will grow up to be a good, productive member of our society.

The kid involved has the attention span of a gnat on Mtn Dew. That is why he forgot there were firearms in his car. He is a great kid and absolutely meant nobody any harm. That doesn't mean he deserves any leniency from the school or the law. But this absolutely wasn't gang related activity.
