FAIRBANKS — Hard work in practice continues to pay big dividends for the Hutchison High School hockey team.

The Hawks had 12 different players score goals as they registered 9-0 and 8-0 Greatland Conference wins against the Kenny Lake Hawks on Friday and Saturday at the Big Dipper Ice Arena.

“Our kids really moved the puck around well, especially today,” Hutchison coach Dave Teets said after Saturday’s win. “We’ve got very unselfish kids, and it’s good to see their hard work in practice get rewarded in games.”

Tyler Sands and Dylan Edwards scored two goals apiece to lead the Hawks in Friday’s 9-0 win. Brian Aarhus, JR Boots, Wyatt Stutzke and Drew Baggen also scored goals. Boots and Markus Daniels each had two assists.

Steffan Katechis scored a pair of goals on Saturday, while Edwards, Daniels, Ben Farnham, Luke Scheuerer, Forrest Sylvester and Ryan Loud chipped in one apiece. Baggen had three helpers.

Hutchison goalie Hayden Nilson notched three saves on Friday and four on Saturday.

Kenny Lake goalie Caleb Helkenn stopped 24 shots on Friday, while Kegan Bowman had 50 saves on Saturday.

The Hawks are 5-1 on the season and 4-0 in Greatland play. Their only loss is to defending Class 4A state champion Lathrop.

The Hawks head to Homer this weekend to play in the End of the Road tournament against three 4A schools — Eagle River on Friday, and Juneau-Douglas and Homer on Saturday.

Monroe triumphs

The Monroe Catholic Rams completed a two-game nonconference high school hockey sweep of the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears on Saturday night in snowy Juneau.

There was no snow on the ground when the Rams went into the rink for a 7 p.m. contest. By the time they came out less than three hours later, there were about six inches on the ground, according to Monroe coach Kirk Haman.

“I just hope we get home tomorrow,” Haman said in a telephone interview after the game. “Some people were telling us they haven’t seen a storm like this in 15 years.”

James Duncan made 17 saves and three different Monroe players scored goals as the Rams improved to 3-1 on the season.

Patrick Otis scored the only goal Monroe needed in the first period off an assist from Sydney Pace. Kyle Coiley added an unassisted goal in the second. Joseph Rauenhorst sealed the win with a pair of third-period goals. Carson Keys assisted on the first goal and Eric Ringstad on the second.

“We played well the entire game and got some real solid goaltending tonight,” Haman said.

The Rams play a pair of Greatland Conference games next weekend in Tok.

West Valley tied

The West Valley Wolfpack skated to a 2-2 tie against the West Anchorage Eagles on Saturday in Anchorage.

West Valley trailed 1-0 after the first period, but tied it up on a goal by Tanner Shoemaker early in the second period. The Wolfpack took the lead midway through the second on a goal by Logan Wendling.

West Valley outshot West Anchorage 13-4 in the second period, but the Eagles managed to tie the score on a goal by Alec Butcher with 8:25 left on the clock.

“We were very flat in the first period, but played a very good second and third period,” said West Valley coach Wayne Sawchuk. “I thought we played well enough to win the game, but we didn’t.”

West Valley goalie Ian Morey stopped 16 shots, including four in the scoreless overtime period.

West Anchorage goalie Blake Mendenhall registered 28 saves, including 15 in the third period and overtime.

West Valley went 1-1-1 on the trip and is 2-1-1 on the season. The Wolfpack take on the Lathrop Malemutes in a Mid Alaska Conference game at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Patty Center.

“I think the guys are looking forward to getting back and playing a home game,” Sawchuk said. “It would have been nice to get a win today, but we’re pleased with this trip.”

North Pole falls

The Dimond Lynx got the best of the North Pole Patriots in the championship game of the Curtis C. Menard II Memorial Hockey Tournament on Saturday night in Wasilla.

The Lynx outshot the Patriots 37-18 in posting a 9-1 victory to claim the championship trophy in the eight-team tournament.

Tyler Keturi scored North Pole’s lone goal off an assist from Jordan Pascoe. Tyler Bunch earned player of the game honors for North Pole.

North Pole goalie Josh Fine made 28 saves.

If you don't have a child in North Pole, why would you care about who they hired. If it doesn't effect you keep your nose out of it.

I just found out that North Pole High School hired Rod Avery are thier head hockey coach. This man has been run out of every youth hockey organization in Fairbanks. He will throw his own mother under a bus to get what he wants... Ive seen it first hand.

Not to mention when selecting the team he has now, he released some kids who were maintaining 3.0 GPAs to get some kids on the roster that will not qualify academically, just becuase they might be a tad better skaters. That will show those kids to keeps thier nose in the books...wont it?

At a time when the district absolutly needs to keep kids in school, North Pole pulls a stunt like that? Im glad I dont have any children or attending school out there!

Monroe played a very disciplined game. Thanks again for coming down to Juneau, and congratulations on a solid win against our JV team.
