Looking Back in Fairbanks — Nov. 15
10 YEARS AGONov. 15, 1999 — Presidential candidate Steve Forbes called for health care, Social Security and tax reform in front of a receptive audience of more than 100 people on Sunday at the Westmark hotel.
Speaking without notes before the largely Republican crowd, Forbes attacked Democratic Vice President Al Gore Jr. and Republican Gov. George W. Bush of Texas — the race’s two front-runners — and laid out an agenda for his presidency.
25 YEARS AGONov. 15, 1984 — Mayor Bill Allen’s travel and expense accounts total about $19,000 since July and include costs ranging from a trip for four to Alberta, Canada, to an $80 gift to evangelist Billy Graham.
50 YEARS AGONov. 15, 1959 — A new kind of game poaching is going on in Fairbanks. Mrs. Gladys H. Stubblefield, 313 3rd St., Graehl, complained to state police that some culprit stole three front and two hind quarters of caribou from her yard. She said it was worth $200.
Police are investigating reports that caribou meat is being hawked in the neighborhood of Mrs. Stubblefield’s home.
75 YEARS AGONov. 15, 1934 — So improved today is the condition of delegate in Congress Anthony J. Dimond of Alaska, who a few days ago was critically ill from the blood clot following an operation for a hernia, that his complete recovery is expected to result in the customary manner and time.
100 YEARS AGONov. 15, 1909 — In his annual report for the past year, Lieutenant Jeunet, wireless expert for Alaska, recommends that wireless stations be erected at Kaltag and at Holy Cross Mission on the lower Yukon and also at Fort Yukon. Lt. Jeunet is now on his way to join his regiment at Fort Leavenworth.
