UAF runners earn conference academic honors

Ten Alaska Nanooks runners were named Thursday to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Cross Country Academic All-Conference Team.

Senior John Parry (anthropology, 3.52 grade point average) made the team for the third straight year, while Einar Often (MBA, 3.62) and Aurelia Korthauer (mechanical engineering, 3.51) were repeat selections.

Several first-time members were nearly perfect in the classroom. They included Theresia Schnurr (chemistry, 3.96), Alex Morris (electrical engineering, 3.95), Ray Sabo (natural resource management, 3.95), Jana Benedix (general studies, 3.93) and Joseph DeWilde (mechanical engineering, 3.89).

Also named to the team were Erik Soderstrom (geology, 3.81) and Ian Wilkinson (general studies, 3.64).

A total of 74 athletes — 24 men and 50 women — were honored. Student-athletes needed to be in at least their second year of competition and have a minimum GPA of 3.20.

Monroe basketball clinics

Monroe Catholic High School will host a pair of fundamental skills basketball clinics in the coming days.

There will be a clinic for youth boys and girls on Saturday, with kindergarten through second grade from 10-11 a.m., grades 3-4 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and grades 5-7 from 1-3 p.m.

The cost is $5 for Immaculate Conception School students and $10 for non-ICS students.

Also, on Monday from 5:30-8:30 p.m. will be a clinic for high school boys. The cost is $10 and space is limited, so registering in advance is recommended.

North Pole hoop camp

The North Pole high school girls basketball team and coaching staff will host its second annual basketball camp from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Nov. 21 in the school gym.

Boys and girls in second through eighth grade are invited to attend. The cost is $30 and registration will be taken at the door.

The camp features skill development in dribbling, shooting, passing and game situations. Drinks and snacks are provided to all participants.
