FAIRBANKS - The only thing scary about “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” being shown in Fairbanks on Halloween night is that even after some 30 years since I last saw it, I still remember all the words and audience prompts.
Besides the outlandish story (more on that soon), moviegoers typically participate at various times during the movie. I was always prepared to throw rice at the wedding, and during a rainy scene misted water into the air while others covered their heads with newspaper. Toast was tossed about when Frank N. Furter makes a toast, and the party hat went on during the dinner party. And I never failed to yell, “Meat Loaf for dinner!” when Eddie, played by the singer known as Meat Loaf, arrived as dinner’s main course. All this followed the action on the screen.
Rachel Blackwell, who is hosting the screening with her new acting company, Naked Stage Productions, hopes others will have similar flashbacks of the campy, but popular 1970s and ‘80s midnight movie (it is still in limited release). To help with the experience, her group will be selling participation bags, and numerous actors will be dressed up like characters from the movie.
“At least seven or eight people, as many as we can get, will be dressed up like transvestite guests at the party,” Blackwell said. “They’ll be out in the audience urging people to participate and hopefully help them along. My guess is a lot of people won’t have seen it. We want people to make the most out of the experience and urge them on; let them know it’s OK to yell at the screen; help them with the things to say and to use all the things in their bags.”
The story is a simple but very twisted love story. A lost couple, Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (played by a young Susan Sarandon), arrive at a castle, home to Frank N. Furter’s, the “sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania.” Strange happenings begin almost immediately as the Annual Transylvanian Convention gets under way.
Frank N. Furter (played by Tim Curry) is intent on building a man, a love toy, since he has discovered the “secret to life itself,” but he eventually must contend with Janet’s growing affection for his new man — Rocky Horror. Along the way Eddie crashes the party, while Dr. Scott tries to upend those living at the castle, which includes Riff Raff and Magenta, Frank N. Furter’s butler and maid. There’s more, but no need to spoil the fun.
And there is plenty of great music, from 1950s rave-ups, to (naturally) glam rock, that drives almost every scene.
The film, based on a musical of the same name, and first released in 1975, quickly gained cult status with midnight showings and audience participation, including people attending the movie dressed like the main characters. Blackwell said that’s the plan with this showing, and scenes from the movie will also be acted out.
“We’re working on getting up and acting out what’s on the screen,” said Blackwell, who will dress as Magenta. “It’s nothing that has to be exact. If you mess up and end up on the wrong side of the stage it’s no big deal. It’s fine. It’s something to show I am playing this character, doing what they are doing (on the screen) but at the same time making fun of them.”
Because her acting troupe is mostly women, some women will be playing male movie roles like Riff Raff and Frank N Furter. She doesn’t see this as an issue.
“It’s a little bit different, but I think “Rocky” is all about playing with gender roles. It’s totally fine,” she said, adding that she’d like people to come in costume. “We encourage it. Anything they want. It is Halloween too.
The movie will begin at midnight, as is traditional, Blackwell said.
“We’re going to start at midnight because that’s something I really wanted. I’ve always gone to it this way, she said. “I don’t want to take away from it by starting earlier.”
